Introduction

SAFETY, ARMING AND INITIATIONTeledyne e2v has been active in safety, arming and initiation technology since 1984.

The activity began with funding Exploding Foil Initiator (EFI) technology in conjunction with RARDE (now QinetiQ and Dstl). This built on the existing high speed switch tube technology already developed at Teledyne e2v.

Through the late 1980s and early 1990s, work was concentrated on EFI initiator research and characterisation, explosive material characterisation and firing circuit development.

Teledyne e2v secured its first product contract for an electronic safety and arming unit (ESAU), including EFI detonator, in 1994. This contract resulted in qualification of a basic firing system in

1996 and delivery of approximately 1,000 production devices.

Since the mid-1990s, the activity has grown and is now a key part of our future business strategy. Today, we are supplying electronic safety and arming units and motor safety ignition units containing EFI detonators to more than 15 weapon systems.

These include torpedoes, missiles and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) systems both for warhead initiation and rocket motor ignition.

Ongoing technology research into low energy EFIs and next generation electronic safety and arming systems is securing the Teledyne e2v portfolio for the future.

• Meeting the requirements of Def-Stan 59-114 and STANAG 4187• Characterise the detonator in accordance with the requirements of STANAG 4560• Develop an ITAR free, European-sourced design• Reduced space envelope for fireset and detonator compared with existing 3kV

design

Low Energy Exploding Foil Initiator (LEEFI) detonatorLEEFI detonator is a ‘drop-in’ module, either directly within the ESAU housing or mounted on a strip-line.

• HNS explosive pellet is the same used in the current e2v EFI Detonator design, with established take-over data

• Performance test results in line with design aims

Fireset developmentCompact fireset produced, to fit within a 25mm diameter, containing HV converter and trigger circuit.

• Nominal operating voltage 1,300V• European-sourced components within the design• Successful take-over of LEEFI detonator

Ongoing developments

Switch developmente2v have developed a low-energy vacuum switch tube based on the current proven, established technology, offering the following benefits;

• Good margin on operating voltage levels; 5,000V hold-off• Low switch-on resistance, fast switching speed• Radiation hard• Guaranteed for a minimum of 50 discharges• High level of immunity of trigger circuit• Preliminary environmental and high ‘G’ testing completed, demonstrating mechanical

robustness• Shot-to-shot performance characterised, showing very high repeatability (suitable for

multi-point applications)

Motor Ignition Safety Device (ISD)e2v is undertaking an internally-funded project to develop a compact motor safety ignition unit, including the initiator, based on the technology developed in the compact fireset programme.

• Meeting the requirements of STANAG 4368• Develop an ITAR free, European-sourced design• Define a common module that can interface with a large number of current and

proposed missile motors

Direct initiation of a pyrogen pellet within the ISD has enabled a design that offers no explosive content within the ISD.

Ongoing developments

Multi-point initiatione2v is currently developing a multi-point initiation system based on the technology developed in the compact fireset programme. The development will:

• Meet the requirements of Def-Stan 59-114 and STANAG 4187• Develop an ITAR free, European-sourced design• Produce repeatable and precise, selectable initiation of four detonators

Initial trial work has demonstrated that the initiation of the four independent detonators is significantly within the timing limits required for simultaneous initiation.

Ultra-Fast Arm & Firee2v is undertaking an internally-funded project to develop an ultra-fast fireset architecture that will enable:

• Sub millisecond (< 1ms) Arm & Fire• No energy accumulation until all Safety Breaks are removed• Technology is applicable to both SAUs and ISDs
