National Association: REBIUN (Red Española de Bibliotecas Universitarias = Spanish University Libraries Network): www.uma.es/rebiunREBIUN is an Association whose purposes are to encourage the library cooperation between the Spanish Universities and to be a forum for interchanging information and writing proposals that represents all Spanish Academic Libraries.

Other members: Research libraries (CSIC=National Scientific Research Council) and National Library.

Introduction (3)REBIUN. Brief history

REBIUN was created at the end of the 80’s by 9 libraries and now it is integrated by 50 libraries.

In 1997 REBIUN was integrated into CRUE: (Conferencia de Rectores de Universidades Españolas = Spanish University Presidents Conference), as a Sectorial Committee. REBIUN send to CRUE the proposals and CRUE gives legal and administrative support.

• To write Recommendations for Academic and Research Libraries (1997)

• Union catalog in MARC format: first on CD-ROM and REBIUN on line since July 2.000 (Z39.50 server)

• Web Site of REBIUN (http://www.uma.es/Rebiun): Directories, Bulletins, working papers, statistics, web sites of interest, etc.

and sotfwares (more difficult for the user)• Each database has a different searching software

and need many maintenance tasks • The last trend is to replace this system by Internet

• Some disadvantages:– More expensive (Web of Science, Scifinder...)– License’s conditions: revision of the licenses

• Very popular service in Spanish Academic Libraries. The Journal Agencies (EBSCO, SWETS) don’t offer the Spanish journals table of contents. The Academic Libraries and the CSIC have to create those databases.

• Some Spanish databases: COMPLUDOC (Universidad Complutense de Madrid), CBUC (Catalonian Consortium) and CSIC databases.

server: DECOMATE Project (European Project of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona)

• E-journals packages (Academic Ideal, Emerald, Science Direct of Elsevier, IEEE, etc.)

• More cost of the scientific journals each year and an extra cost for the electronic version.

• Need of a national agency to negociate a cooperative adquisition of the basic scientific information resources (examples: NESLI in the U.K., other National Consortia). This is a new goal for REBIUN.

• Internet has transformed the way through people access to the information. There is a risk that Libraries and librarians become the last resource. Information specialists and librarians must anticipate those changes and adapt their role for the future.

• The Academic Library without barriers and personalized electronic services.

• The Academic Libraries as a basic support for distance learning.

• Librarians and Computer Staff team working very closed to Proffessors and Researchers.
