Kings High School Announces the Class of 2013 Valedictorian and Co-Salutatorian
Congratulations to Kings Bus Driver Bob Elfers who was recently
awarded the 2012 NX Values Award, sponsored by the National Ex-
press Corporation which is the company that supports Petermann,
Kings school bus provider. The award is intended for someone who
goes above and beyond what is needed as a bus driver. Bob was nom-
inated by Sharon Earnhart, Kings Transportation Manager. Bob drives
a special needs bus. Two parents on his run are going through bouts of cancer. Bob goes out
of his way to help a dad and a young mother by going to the door to pick up the children. He
has taken the family food and visited one of the parents in the hospital. Earnhart said, “Bob
is helpful with his special needs students and their families.” Bob has had some health issues
of his own, keeping him from traveling to England to accept his award. But through it all, he
has still continued to work and worry about others before himself.
Congratulations to Kings
High School’s Valedictorian
Claire Sadowski and Co-
Salutatorians Matthew
Drew and Chris Koloseike.

Kerry Wood from the William Howard Taft Home and
National Park visited the Second Grade classes at
South Lebanon Elementary last week. The children
learned how William Howard Taft and his siblings
spent their family recreations growing up in Mount
Auburn during the 1850’s time period. He explained to
the students how Taft and his family valued the simple
things in life from reading Aesop’s Fables, and playing
with old wooden toys to strong family values displayed
to him that would lead him to become a very im-
portant figure in American History.

Seniors Zoe Rodriguez, Kelly Madison, and Emily Douglass entered the VANS
Custom Culture competition this year. They designed and created a pair of
custom Vans for each of the 4 categories, Art, Music, Action Sports, and Local
Flavor. Once they completed the shoes, they photographed their shoes and
uploaded them to be judged. Then, VANS had their judges narrow down the
submissions from the original 1000 to the top 50, 10 from each of 5 regions.
The grand prize winner will receive $50,000 and each runner up will receive
$4,000 for their school’s art program. Kings is in the top 50 for the SECOND
year in a row. Voting has started and will continue until May 13th. Only one
vote per IP address is allowed. Click here to vote. The shoes will be on display
in the display cases in the main hallway at KHS to check out! Let’s help Kings
win this. VOTE today!

KHS Seniors Finalists In VANS Shoe Company Competition
Please spread the word! Mildred Boyce, JFB’s resident volunteer gardener, has applied for a grant
opportunity to expand JFB’s garden. We need as many votes as possible to help increase our chances
of winning!
Click the following link: https://www.facebook.com/seedsofchange/app_589705354373524 and “like”
the “Seeds of Change, Share the Good” Facebook page, enter 45039 as the zip code for our garden,
and select “Grandma Millie’s Garden” to vote for JFB! You can vote once a day until 5/17/13.
Grandma Millie's Garden would benefit greatly from tools such as a greenhouse, worm beds, grow lights, plant supports and
labels, compost tumblers, grow bed liners, a drip system, heavy-duty sprinklers, shovels, hoes, spades, garden forks, wheel-
barrows, materials for building raised beds, a rototiller, plants, natural fertilizers and top soil, utility buckets, and work gloves
for adults and children. An outbuilding for storage would be a dream come true with the addition of the above. A grant would
help to achieve these goals.

The Christian Howes Trio came to Kings Junior High this week to work with the
7th and 8th Grade Orchestra under the direction of KJH Orchestra Teacher, Rana
Southern. Howes, a former Associate Professor at the Berklee College of Music,
has helped thousands of string players improvise, compose, and jam in fiddle
styles, jazz, blues, rock, and more. The students had the opportunity to learn and
play along with Mr. Howes. He showed them how to compose melodies and
bass lines, and how to improvise into bluegrass, reggae, waltz, rock and classical
styles.

SLE Celebrates Earth Day
As an Earth Day project, third grade families from Mrs. Mur-
phy and Mrs. Blount’s classes at South Lebanon Elementary
have been working on creating a “Trash Robot” out of mate-
rials that can be recycled. Each robot was also to have a
special power that would promote world-wide recycling and
would help keep the Earth clean and green.
For 13 years, the EClub from South Lebanon Elementary has
been working hard making a difference for our environment.
Their efforts were recognized last Saturday at the Earth Day
Festivities at Sawyer Point. They were awarded the 2013
Student Environmental Award from the Greater Cincinnati
Earth Coalition (GCEC) . Matt Carter from the GCEC said,
“The competition was tough but the EClub’s work, passion,
and the commitment to the environment put them on top.”
This was the first time the GCEC has given the award to a
student group versus an individual. To learn more about the
GCEC click here.

This spring, the South Lebanon Elementary Environmental Club will begin to focus their after school meetings and efforts
toward environmental stewardship in our community. They will be launching this focus through a screening of the docu-
mentary, What’s On Your Plate. This documentary follows two young girls, their families and their community engagement
campaign about kids and food politics.
In addition to the screening, they will be hosting an SLE Environmental Stewardship Fair. Their goal is to promote innova-
tive sustainable food system practices and how to make healthy local eating a priority for our families. The SLE Steward-
ship Fair will be established as a public viewing event. During the fair, families will be able to discuss with local company/
business owners how they have made a positive impact on influencing our community to think about what they’re eating
and where it comes from. There will also be hands on activities for the students to partake in, such as composting practice,
planting vegetable seeds to take home, and recognizing ingredients in food labels. There will be local businesses at the Fair
including Whole Foods, Wildflower Café, Warren County Soil and Water District, and Eddie Merlot’s with Veggie U, just to
name a few. There will also be an environmentally friendly raffle with items that promote the club’s ideals. All of the mon-
ey raised will go toward the development of our Outdoor Classroom, in partnership with the Kohl’s Cares program. The
hope is to break ground on this project at the end of this school year. Mark your calendar for Monday, May 20th from 5-8
p.m. in the SLE Cafeteria.

The Miami Valley Tech Prep Consortium works with 51 area high
schools to create seamless career-technical educations programs that
begin in the junior year of high school and continue through an associ-
ate degree in college and beyond. Every year, students compete in the
Sinclair Tech Prep Showcase. Students develop contextual learning
projects based on the skills and knowledge they have gained in their
Tech Prep classes. The Showcase provide students with the oppor-
tunity to network with other consortium students and to interact with
judges from the business, industry, and labor. This year, KHS students
in Mr. Holtrey’s IT Program competed in the Showcase. The team of
Paul Koerbel, Paul Beeson, Christian Rosiak, and Tyler Patterson won
First Place in the IT division. The team of Collin Cooper, Jeff Martin,
