Laps for Literacy—Mrs. Montag Walks 24 Miles!
For the past 13 years J.F. Burns Elementary Principal Cheryl
Montag has encouraged her students to read with the Laps for Literacy Program. From January
to April students log every minute of extra-curricular reading they do. Those minutes are
added up and calculated into laps. This year’s students, once again, broke the building
record reading for a total of 1,273,817 minutes. Last year’s total was 1,121, 922 .
So this year, Mrs. Montag walked eight laps around Landen Lake – 24 miles! On the first
lap around the lake Mrs. Montag was joined by the top classes and Superintendent Dr.
Valerie Browning. Mrs. Montag and Dr. Browning wore pink shirts that said “1,273,817.”
Later in the afternoon Mrs. Montag walked with the top readers.
This year’s walking event was in support of two J.F. Burns staff members currently un-
dergoing treatment for breast cancer. The walk also featured a lemonade stand to raise
money for J.F. Burns preschool teacher, Angie Niemann who was diagnosed with breast
cancer in November 2012 and has been undergoing treatments and surgeries since that
time. The lemonade stand raised over $900!

Kings Spanish V Donates to Cooperative for Education
On Friday, May 17th, the students of Jorge Gonzalez’s Spanish V Conversation class
officially gave a check for $2,500 to Cooperative for Education (CoEd) so that Kings
can fulfill its promise to sponsor another school in Guatemala. In the last two years,
Kings has been a school-to-school textbook sponsor by raising $5,000 so that students
in rural schools in Guatemala can have the four-core textbooks.
Gina Leiser, a representative from CoEd, came to visit the students who sponsor such
fund raising activi-
ties as “Jeans para
Guatemala” for
the teachers and
staff, and

Kings Class of 2019 Ready to Cross the Bridge to Junior High
Transitions are never easy – whether it be new homes, neighborhoods, jobs or schools. The Kings School District continues the
process of evaluating the transitions that our students make from the time they enter Kindergarten until they leave Post-
Secondary Training to become contributing members of society. With that in mind, the junior high hosted the current sixth grade
class on Thursday morning to continue their process of crossing that bridge between CIS and KJH.
Students, in three equal groups of 100, were met in the multi-purpose room to be welcomed by building administrators and
counselors. Mr. Spinner reminded them that we are all KINGS KNIGHTS. After watching the student created “Welcome to KJH”
video; the sixth grade students moved with their homerooms into two equal groups and met up with an equally divided Home
Base Classroom of 7th Graders. While half of those groups worked on a team-building activity, the other half toured the campus
stopping at 16 stops. The incoming 6th
graders also had an opportunity to ask
questions about what life was like at KJH.
The students enjoyed lunch together in the
KJH Café’ along with KONA ICE. The day
concluded with a Scavenger Hunt in the
Kings Stadium where students were chal-
lenged with little known facts about Kings
Mills, the history of Kings Schools and trivia
about the 7th Grade Teachers.

tism Speaks and also has an autistic son, Scotty, the students also
posted signs ad-
vertising the puz-
zle piece sale. The

Last Thursday evening, 22 seniors, 8 of whom have been a special part of the
Kings Choral Department for four years or more, took the stage for the final
time. There were many amazing solos, serenades, and shenanigans as they
sang farewell. Following three wild and crazy finales choreographed by Lau-
ren Abernathy, Zack Middleton, Niki Walter, Allison Herndon, and Grant
Abbott, awards were distributed, which included the National School Choral
Award/Chuck Mason Scholarship and Fred Waring Director’s Award/Jared
Adamson Scholarship. This year’s recipients, Zack Middleton and Emily
Haddix (respectively), were selected by the students in the choral depart-
ment and the awards were presented by Dr. Browning.

Kings Freshman Camp
Moving up to the high school from the junior high can be a scary time for some students. To make that transition a
little less stressful and a little easier, Kings High School hosted Kings Freshman Camp Thursday, May 16, and Friday,
May 18. This 2 day event introduced incoming freshman (this year ’s eighth graders) to some upperclassman who will
ease them into their first year as high schoolers.
On the first day of camp, incoming Freshman were divided into ”families. ” Upperclassmen parent those families—
hopefully making the Freshmen feel more comfortable in their new high school home. The families participated in
skits, a scavenger hunt, and team building activities. The upper-class leaders outfitted their families with some-
thing special to wear whether it was a colored bandana, a visor, beads, or a Hawaiian Lei.
KHS Assistant Principal Rob Burnside said he hopes this will help bring the students together. Another part of the
camp will extend to the first day of classes next
year. The upperclassmen in charge of families will
go out of their way to find the freshmen they
worked with at the camp to say ”hi” and help them
through that first day.
Pictured are the families working together to form
a perfect rectangle during their team building activ-
ity.
