Columbia Choir Performs at Xavier
On December 4th, the 5th grade choir from Columbia,
directed by Carolyn Dillon, sang the National Anthem at
the Xavier University Women’s basketball game against
Murray State. The students enjoyed this unique oppor-
tunity, and were treated to a photo with the cheerlead-
ers, mascot, and even got to high-five the players on their
way out to warm-ups! They sang beautifully, and repre-
sented Kings in such a professional, positive way. They
also performed on December 12th at Emeritus at Long
Cove Pointe in Mason. The residents really enjoyed the
performance and were happy to join in on some familiar carols. Congratulations, singers!

Edible Solar System
Students in Mrs. Briscoe’s & Mrs. Dickman’s 5th grade Science clas-
ses created not just any model of our Solar System, but an edible
model of our Solar System! Students used all different types of can-
dy to represent the different planets, asteroids, moons, and the sun.
They had to research the sizes and colors of the planets and use the
candy that represented that planet the best. For example, Mars was
perfect as the tiny red hot! Student teacher Mrs. Watson explained
the lesson and helped students make the connections of the different
sizes and locations of the planets and other objects that are in outer
space. It was a delicious lesson for sure!

CIS 5th Graders Adopt Soldiers
The students in Mrs. Dickman’s and Mrs. Bris-

packages for soldiers stationed overseas. This
activity was part of a leadership project that
Mrs. Watson had to do as a graduation require-
ment from Northern Kentucky University. The
class adopted a soldier through the organiza-
tion, Soldier’s Angels. The students brought in
items for the care package such as candy and
personal care items. Last week, they wrote letters and wrapped all of the gifts to send. Mrs. Watson said,
“We are very excited at this opportunity to help boost the morale for this troop and give them a little piece
of home and let them know how much we appreciate and care for all their hard work they have done for
us!”

Watch for Whooping Cough
The State of Ohio has seen an increase in the number of cases of Pertussis (Whooping Cough). A few
school districts in Warren County have seen some cases recently. Please make
yourself familiar with the symptoms of Whooping Cough, such as a cough lasting at
least 2 weeks, repeated violent coughs without breathing in between, inspiratory
“whoop”, or post-cough vomiting, without other apparent causes. The illness be-
gins with cold symptoms. The Warren County Combined Health District is recom-
mending that parents monitor their children during the holiday break and to have
any persistent/prolonged cough evaluated by their physician prior to returning to
school in January. Click here to read more.
Holiday Shoppe at SLE
Mrs. Elder's 3rd grade students at South Lebanon Elementary
experienced the joy of gift-giving as they visited the Holiday
Shoppe during their library time. Mrs. Burkholder and parent
volunteers assisted the students as they selected inexpensive
gifts for loved ones, purchased them, and “wrapped” them at a
gift-bagging station. This was not only a lesson in gift-giving,
but leading up to the Holiday Shoppe visits, all SLE students
were encouraged to start earning & saving money at home
and then budget how much they would spend on each loved
one on their shopping list. The SLE shoppers were very excited
and took great pride in their gift selections.
