Mason VFW Donates to CES

The kind and generous folks at the Mason VFW Post 9622 recently

donated $2,000 to Columbia Elementary School. The money is to

be used to purchase playground equipment in memory of Sammy

Reagan.

Linda Holliday of the Ladies Auxiliary said “We like to do good

things for good people.” In the past the VFW post has donated

money to start a scholarship fund at Kings High School. They also

adopted Kings Mills Elementary after being invited to march in the

school’s annual Veteran’s Day Parade. The post made a donation

to KME last year.

Jill and Bill Reagan and their sons, Jack and Brian were at CES to accept the donation on behalf of the school. Pictured with

the Reagans are: Trustee Patrick Kelley, Robert Kelley, Commander Jim Barker, Adjutant Bill Hinton, First Vice Command-

er Roger Coates, and Ladies Auxiliary President Linda Holliday.

Kings Senior Yard Signs

The time has come to take or-

ders for the 12th annual Senior

Yard Sign display! For those that

may be new this year, signs are

printed on both sides, like the

sample below (The actual size is

24” x 18”). Your student’s name

is hand printed on the bottom of

each side by parent volunteers,

stapled onto brackets. You can

personally pick up your sign or

have your senior bring the sign

home from school. Pick up is

6:30-7:30 p.m. May 9, in the HS

Cafeteria, or seniors will bring

signs home from school on May

10. We know how proud you are

of your student’s accomplish-

ment in graduating and this is

such a fun way to show it to

friends, neighbors and the com-

munity in general! We truly

hope to have 100 percent partic-

ipation so no one will be left out.

Simply complete the form from

the link below and return by

Friday, April 19, along with your

$10 (checks made payable to

KAPP (Kings After Prom Party)).

Feel free to order as many as

you want!

printing of the student’s names

on these signs, please complete

that portion of the form as well.

please feel free to call Diane

Westaway at 513-543-3371 or

KJH Students Compose Songs

Students at Kings Junior High have been reading The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. They have also

been working on projects. Several students in Emily Boone’s class even wrote songs. You can

watch their videos on YouTube.

Our Friends in Any Lan-

guage

The ESL students at Kings

High School wanted to

leave their mark on a map.

With the help of their

teacher Rhonda Allen-

Harman, the students cre-

ated a world map graphic

that is near the guidance

office. Each student placed

a star on the map to show

where they are from. Their

goal is to have teachers

and other international

students place a star on the map too. “They are very excited and proud of this project which they

hope will help build awareness about the increasing diversity of our student body and communi-

ty,” Mrs. Allen-Harman said.

guez, Sancar Unal, and Kaan Unal.

Students in Laurie Ste-

phens 5th grade class at

Columbia Intermediate

had the opportunity to

travel back in time and

meet a historical figure

from the Lewis and

Clark Expedition. Meri-

wether Lewis (portrayed

by 6th grade teacher

Ken Johnson) spoke to

the students about his

experiences as he trav-

eled through the wilderness looking for a Northwest Passage

between 1804-1806. The students were able to ask him ques-

tions about the challenges that he faced during his travels and

observe journal entries from members of the expedition. After-

wards, the students themselves participated in journal writing

where they imagined that they were along for the journey and

had to record the geography, vegetation, people, and animals

they encountered along the way.

It’s almost time to register for the 2013 Foot-

ball Cheer Season! Registration is April 16

and May 9. Visit

www.kyocheer.shutterfly.com for details.

This year, there will be a Uniform Resale Night, sepa-

YES Goes Swimming

After a long day at school the chance to go swimming at the Countryside

YMCA is just what the students in the YES Club need. The YES Club is an after-

school group that meets twice weekly to focus on strengthening reading skills

and test-taking strategies.

Title 1 Reading Teacher Peggy Allen started this club many years ago. She was

looking for a meaningful incentive to get her 18 students to participate. That’s

when she and the directors at the YMCA came up with the “Swim and Read”

program. The reading program runs as usual, but January through March, a

swim component is added. Students ride the activity bus to the YMCA on

Mondays for swim lessons.

“They get so much individual attention from the swim instructors, but I think

there’s a lot more than just swimming going on—there is listening, responsi-

bility, being held accountable, teamwork, sportsmanship, respecting the wa-

ter, and a myriad of other life skills as the kids have fun and learn the im-

portance of learning to swim,” Mrs. Allen said.

At lunchtime and recess there is always a little buzz brewing on swim day,

Mrs. Allen added.

“It takes a lot of hard work and determination for these kids to put in extra

hours at school after their friends are home playing, so it is wonderful to be

able to add this layer to their class,” Mrs. Allen said.

The YES Club (as in “YES” we can do it!) meets every Monday and Tuesday

after school for one hour. It is comprised of 18 third and fourth grade students.

History Day

On Thursday, March 7,

200 students at Colum-

bia Elementary School

stood by while their

History Day presenta-

tions were judged for

an upcoming competi-

tion. School adminis-

trators and teachers

selected the top presentations.

For this project, students had to write a research paper about an

historic event, scientist or inventor. Students also had to complete a

poster board presentation. Many different famous people, events,

inventors and scientists were highlighted for this assignment.

This year 12 winners will compete at the district competition at the

Cincinnati Museum Center on April 6. The winners are: Mallory

Marchal, Brenda Lumbreras Sanchez, Tiffany Grant, Casey Jantzen,

Adele Poling, Nicole Sunderhaus, Alice Coleman, Zoey Fitzgerald,

Erica Preston, Ally Coughlin, Jess Harmon, and Dorothy Nie.

Tiffany Grant is pictured with her History Day project.

here before you know it. This

10th Anniversary event, at the

Great Wolf Lodge Conference

Center, is on Saturday, April

13. The evening includes a

cocktail reception, dinner, live

entertainment by 2nd Wind, silent and live auctions and a fabulous basket raffle. Knight to Remember is present-

Students in Lynn Wagner’s

math classes at Columbia Ele-

mentary School celebrated Pi

day, March 14, searching

through the first 3,847 numbers

of Pi! Of course they did this

while eating pie. The activity

included looking for birth dates,

phone numbers, classroom,

numbers, and more. They also

watched Pi videos while eating

pie. It was indeed a delicious Pi

day.

Warren County Solid Waste Management District for a program called

“How Surface Water Flows.” Susanne Geisler came and read a book

“Rain, Rain, Rivers” by Uri Shulevitz. After discussing the different

landforms that our earth has, the students were asked to create any

landform they wanted and then mark where they thought that “rain”

water would flow on their landform.

The 90th Annual Scholastic Art Awards recognized ten of KJH art

teacher Jan Thomann’s current and former students with Honora-

ble Mention and Silver and/or Gold Keys for their work with ceram-

ics and glass as well as painting. Congratulations!

The talents of our art students continue to shine all

over the state! This weekend two Kings High School

students, Kevin Butler and Matt Liebowitz, both had

photographs selected for the Ohio Governor’s Youth

Art Exhibition Top 300. Out of 12,000 entries from

across the state, only 300 were selected for this honor!

This is an incredible showcase for the talents of our art

students. Congratulations!

Dear Parent, The score of the big game. The name of the girl in their English class. The clothes and hairstyles. Those are just a few of the details your student will want to remember about this school year. Help your student keep those memories sharp by buying a 2012-13 Kings High School Yearbook. For only $75 your student will have a book that will be enjoyed now, and 20, 30 or even 50 years from now. You also can make the yearbook extra special by purchasing namestamping and a protective plastic cover. It’s easy to order! Buy online at www.yearbookforever.com and enter the school name. Parents of seniors will also have the opportunity to buy a personal ad in the book. Imag-ine your son or daughter’s surprise when they open the yearbook and see their own baby photo and special message from you. Or honor the seniors of that special team, sport, or activity with a photo and message they will never forget. The last day to buy a Yearbook is April 26. Order now, so your student won’t miss out when the yearbook is distributed in the Fall of 2013. Seniors who have graduated have their books mailed home to the official address on record at Kings. As an adult, you know how important high school memories become. Don’t let your stu-dent’s memories fade; make sure they get a yearbook now! Sincerely, Kelly Shields Yearbook Adviser Kings High School
