Hand with Arc Flash Burns
Severe Arc Flash injury to inner arm
Typical Arc Flash injuries
What is Arc Flash? An Arc Flash or arc fault happens when electric current flows through air gaps between conductors, causing a short circuit.
When does it occur?Arc flashes often occur when racking in a breaker, performing switching, due to insulation failure, or accidents caused by touching a test probe to the wrong surface or slipped (non-insulated) tools.
What makes up an Arc Flash? In its most basic form, an arc is made up of four elements; thermal energy (heat), acoustical energy (sound), pressure wave and debris. Each of these elements can cause serious injury or death to a person.
The dangerous partThe most dangerous part of an Arc Flash incident is the fact that it creates temperatures high enough to burn skin, but also ignite non Arc rated clothing. Burns due to burning clothing are the most serious, involve large percentages of the body and are more often than not, fatal.

• Test Set Up
• 37cal/cm² or 10kA/1sec rated Arc Flash jacket ready for testing
• The garment has never been worn, however has been laundered industrially 50 times
• The garment is a dual layer Proban construction, of 330gsm per layer
• The initial Arc Flash ignition is anywhere between 9,000º & 20,000º C
• The copper in the switchboard is vaporised and expands to over 40,000 times its solid volume
• Plasma is generated by the arc putting the garment under immense heat and pressure
• The arc continues for 1 full second, as a result of high fault current and slow trip times
• The manikin is equipped with temperatures sensors, none of which may surpass levels that would cause second degree burns
• The garment cannot break open at all or it will fail the test
• The garment passes this test at 10kA/1sec or 37cal/cm²
• No part of the garment breaks open, and no temp sensor register a second degree burn value
• A worker wearing this garment with other appropriate PPE would have had none, or only minor injuries

Standards ExplainedNFPA 70E is the world’s leading standard on Arc Flash protection and risk mitigation.NFPA 70E is the world’s leading standard on Arc Flash protection and risk mitigation. Part of the standard, is a list of categories designed to advise and determine protection categories for equipment and clothing.
The categories (Cat) range from Cat 0 through to Cat 4. The lower the number, the lower the risk of a piece of equipment, or the lower the protection of a garment. The higher the number, the higher the risk of a piece of equipment and the higher the protection on clothing.
Clothing should always be selected to match, or be higher than the Cat rating of the equipment being worked on. Each Category covers a range of Arc Flash protection ratings, which are measured in calories per square centimeter (cal/cm2). The higher a cal/cm2 rating, the higher the category, and the higher the risk from equipment (or protection from a garment).
When NFPA 70E was written, the categories were based on the number of fabric layers required to achieve a certain level of protection. For example, to get 10cal/cm2 protection, with the fabrics at the time, two layers were needed (so it was called Cat 2). Technology and fabric advances mean this old adage no longer applies, and Cat 1 and 2 can now both be achieved with single layer, Cat 3 can be achieved with only two layers, and so on.

CAT 2 (8-25CAL/CM2
NFPA 70E)This category achieves the ‘magic number 8’ of 8cal/cm2, which many companies have deemed to be the minimum for all day workwear.
The thinnest and lightest Cat 2 fabrics can be as light as 235gsm (grams per
square meter) single layer.
This is suitable for all but the most humid climates.
CAT 4 (40CAL/CM2
NFPA 70E)The most popular choice for high risk tasks, Cat 4 garments are rated upwards of 40cal/cm2 and provide the highest protection offered under the standard. When risk levels are high, and piece of mind is an absolute must, Cat 4 is the most
popular choice. Although thicker fabrics and multi layer constructions are required to achieve this category, developments in fabric means garments are no longer as hot, bulky and uncomfortable as they once were.
CAT 0 (NO CAT RATING AS4836)No cal/cm2 rating, and is simply flame retardant (FR). It is possible for a garment to be flame retardant, and not have an Arc Flash cal rating. It is not possible to have a cal rating without being flame retardant. This is because an Arc Flash cal rating is achieved by exposure to an Arc Flash test, while an FR garment or fabric is simply exposed to a static flame test. As such, we know all Arc Flash cal rated garments will pass a FR test as they must be FR to pass the Arc Flash test. A fabric that passes only a FR static flame test, is by no means guaranteed to pass an Arc Flash cal rating test.
CAT 3 (26-39CAL/CM2
NFPA 70E)This is the least used or popular category in NFPA 70E, as many companies will jump straight from Cat 2 workwear, to Cat 4 high risk protection to achieve 40cal/cm2, leaving out Cat 3.
Despite this, Cat 3 is still an excellent
option as it can provide very close to 40cal/cm2 with less layers, and is still a very protective garment.
For example, a two layer switching coat can provide in the high-30s of cal/cm2 rating.
NB: It is important not to confuse the Cat rating of Arc Flash garments/equipment with the Cat rating of test and measurement equipment, these are in no way related.
* Not an official rating in NFPA 70E, but an industry accepted term for anything exceeding Cat 4.
CAT 1 (4-7CAL/CM2 NFPA 70E)The popularity of Cat 1 clothing for all day workwear is increasing exponentially.
Previously it was seen as a ‘must have’ to have over 8cal/cm2 for workwear.
This is changing, with more and more companies accepting lower values (5-7cal/cm2) for their workwear, in order to achieve wearability and breathability benefits only offered by lighter but lower rated fabrics.
