A CONCRETE MIX DESIGN was carried out to conform produce grade M60 concrete. The mix was to fabricate concrete poles of service class SC75Grade 60 was assumed since grade M40 is used in SC50.

M60 grade of concrete provided here is for reference purpose only. Actual site conditions vary and thus this should be adjusted as per the test on materials.

A. Design Brief:Characteristic comprehensive Strength at 28 days = 60 N/mm2

Maximum size of aggregate = 20 mmDegree of workability = CollapsibleDegree of quality control = Good…assumes there is good quality control in factoryType of exposure = Severe…exposed to weatherMinimum cement content as per is BS and KS standards

B. Test data for concrete ingredients (Assumed and tests to be done to confirm)Specific gravity of cement = 3.15Specific gravity of fly ash = 2.24Specific gravity of micro-silica = 2.21Setting time of cement initial = 120 min, final = 185 minCement compressive strength expected =45.0 N/mm2 at 3 days =55.0 N/mm2 at 7 days =68.0 N/mm2 at 28 daysSpecific gravity of coarse aggregates (ca) 20 mm =2.729

fine aggregates (fa)10 mm =2.747River sand =2.751Crushed sand =2.697

Water absorptionfor 20 mm aggregates =1.5,

10mm aggregates =1.8,

River sand =3.8,

Crushed sand =4.5

C. Quantities of ingredients ( by absolute volume Method )Actual cement used = 450 kg/m3

Actual fly ash used = 80 kg/m3

Actual micro-silica used = 40 kg/m3

Water/Cement ratio fixed at 0.25Absolute volume of cement = 0.143Absolute volume of air = 0.02Absolute volume of water. = 0.137Absolute volume of fly ash. = 0.036Absolute volume of micro-silica = 0.018

D. Aggregate percent to be used.20 mm = 31%, 10 mm = 25%, river sand = 34%, crushed sand = 10%

E. Abstract material data:20 mm 545 kg/m3

10 mm 445 kg/m3

river sand 605 kg/m3

crushed sand 175 kg/m3

water 137 kg/m3

Superplasticizer 0.50 % BY WT from BASF (Baden Aniline and Soda Factory) Company

Expected Cube Compressive Strength (N/mm2) as tested 3 days = 41. N/mm2

7 Days = 58. N/mm2

28 Days = 71.0 N/mm2

NB:1. An admixture is a material added to the batch of concrete before or

during its mixing to modify its freshly mixed, setting or hardened properties. One or more admixtures can be added to a mix to achieve the desired results.

2. There may be need to adjust upwards the steel number to be used depending on the pole in the range of 30%
