Elections for Everyone This is a short version of the Electoral Commission report called Elections for Everyone, which was published in November 2017.

!1

The Electoral Commission is an independent organisation.

It was set up by the UK Parliament.

It checks that elections are run properly.

Elections are when people can vote.

This report is about how someone with a disability:

• Registers to vote

• Votes

It tells you about the problems voters with a disability have when they vote and how they would like to see things change for the better.

It also tells you what should be done to help make elections more accessible for everyone.

!2

It says:

• There should be no barriers to voting for people with a disability

• Everyone should have the right to vote on their own and in secret.

Voting should be a good thing to do for everyone.

• People with disabilities don’t always know that:

• They can vote

• They can have support to vote

!3

A barrier is something that stops you from voting

• Care and support workers need to know how they can support the people when they vote

• People running elections need to understand the needs of people with disabilities

They should make it easy for people to register to vote and to vote

• Candidates and parties should make sure information is in easy-to-read

!4

The candidate is the person who wants you to vote for them.

A party, or political party, is a organised group who want people to vote for them.

The information should be available in good time before the election so people have the time to read it

• When political parties publish their manifestos, they should make sure accessible versions are available at the same time

• People with a disability should have as much time as anyone else to understand what the parties stand for

!5

The manifesto is a document that explains what that political party would do if it gets elected.

A political party is elected if more people vote for it than other political parties.

It is important that everyone has plenty of time to think about their decision before they vote on election day

• The Government should look at different ways that people with disabilities can vote so that they can choose the best way for them

The Electoral Commission wants to work with people and organisations to help make voting is as easy as possible.

This is a short version of the report. If you would like to find the full report - please look at the Electoral Commission website: www.electoralcommission.org.uk
