outside with Mother Nature, I can relax about travel and being away from them, know-ing that “Mother N” will be their caretaker.

Our program for this month’s meeting, to be held on June 23rd, will feature a panel of seasoned orchid growers who will share some of their suc-cesses (and failures) in seek-ing approaches to successful productions from their orchid plants. It promises to be an enjoyable – as well as educa-tional – evening once again.

Cheers and good growing of orchids and other plants this beginning of our summer in Gainesville and surrounding areas! John

Rephrasing from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s 1945 musical, Carousel: June is bursting out all over with showers, humid-ity and some amazing growth spurts from our orchid plants! Thank goodness the rains have come, although some-what earlier than their sea-sonal inception. No matter, they bring Mother Nature’s natural nourishment to all our plants (even the non-orchid types) and help pro-vide almost everything that our plants might need for good growth and production (with an occasional nutrient supplement thrown in for good measure).

In my own growing areas (screened patio, boundary

fences, laundry-drying poles (from an incomplete green-house), and citrus trees, the orchids receive rain, wind for air movement, sunlight and shade in various levels of in-tensity and natural nutrients (courtesy of the birds, squir-rels, insects and other con-tributors of nutritive waste that travel in, on, and over the plants. I help my orchids along by also providing ferti-lizer pellets in small, plastic, multi-colored capsules that allow the nutrients to leech out into the growing medium whenever it rains or the plants are watered, and so, they do not need to rely on my memory for that portion of their growth cycle. AOS Orchid News

As the newly appointed Chair of the AOS Affiliated Societies committee, I am also, like all of

you, the AOS representative for my society. I so enjoyed getting Lynn Fuller’s emails of the AOS

Corner in the past that I would like to continue that tradition.

The AOS Corner- From the desk of Laura Newton, Affiliated Society Chair

The Spring AOS Members’ Meeting in Minnesota was a huge success! Our sincere thanks go

out to the members of the Orchid Society of Minnesota for hosting this event. Speaking of Mem-

bers’ Meetings, we are thrilled to announce that our Fall Meeting “Orchid Spooktacular” will be

held in the Orlando area, October 29th - November 2nd. Our official hotel is the Sheraton Orlando

North. Make plans now to join us in Florida! Something is brewing…come and be a part of it!

There is more exciting news! The fee for a digital membership has been reduced to $40 per

year; a savings of $25. Please encourage your members to take advantage of this new member-

ship level!

Have you been participating in our webinars? We are hosting webinars on various topics each

month. This month it will be on Orchids Plus, our new and innovative award program that has

both an online and offline version for searching through all AOS awards. Ever wondered what a

really good awardable flower looks like? Now is your chance to see the program in action. This

webinar is open to both members and non-members, so spread the word!

The most important advice that I can give all of you is to be enthusiastic about your passion for

growing orchids. Let your society members know all of the wonderful things that you gain from

being a member of the American Orchid Society! As an AOS representative I give a 5-10 minute

talk at our monthly meetings on at least one significant piece of information from the website and

one article that I particularly enjoyed from our magazine.

If you have any questions, concerns or suggestions, on how to help build your society with the

AOS please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Lastly, we are always looking for motivated people with great ideas to join our committee, so if

this interests you, come and help us grow the AOS.

Growing our membership, one Orchid lover at a time,

Laura Newton

Some Ideas for Homemade Organic Pest Control

From Orchids Magazine

Thrips can be difficult to control even with traditional chemical controls because they feed on plant parts as well as flowers but home remedies based on nicotine extracts can afford reasonable control. A number of insect home remedies depend on the tox-icity of nicotine, typically derived from tobacco tea.

Tobacco Tea

Place three fingers of chewing tobacco in an old nylon stocking and soak in a gallon of hot water until the mixture is dark brown.

To control Thrips

5 unpeeled cloves of garlic coarsely chopped

2 cups boiling water

1/2 cup tobacco tea

1 tsp. instant tea granules

1 tsp. baby shampoo

Place chopped garlic in heat-proof bowl and pour boiling water over it. Let it steep overnight. Strain through a coffee filter, and mix with other ingredients in a hand-held mist sprayer, thoroughly drench plants.
