NEWMARKET - Ernest "Jum- bo" Gauvin, 71, of Great Cove Drive, died on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 1984, at his home after a long illness. He was born in Springfield, Mass., on Jan. 1, 1913, and resided 25 years in Penacook and Concord before moving to Newmarket. He had lived here the past 13 years. In 1934, Mr. Gauvin held the New England heavyweight boxing cham- pionship. He was a tractor-trailer truck driver for many years at White Brothers Milk Co. and P.B. Mutrie, both of Manchester. A well-known salt water fisher- man, Mr. Gauvin was a former member of the Laconia Rod and Gun Club and also was a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Loyal Order of Moose, both in Concord. He was a communicant of St. Mary Church here. Members of the family include his wife, Rita Gauvin of Newmarket; a step-daughter, Mrs. Theodore (Rita) Cichon and a stepson, Larry Swee- ney, both of Newmarket; two daugh- ters; five grandchildren and several brothers and sisters. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday in St. Mary Church. Burial will be in the spring in Calvary Cemetery. Born March 20, 1896, in Patterson,N.J., the daughter of Walter andHenriette (Bissette) Gallant, she hadresided in this community for 62years.

She was a graduate of RobinsonFemale Seminary and Skidmore Col-lege class of 1919.

Miss Gallant was a longtime activemember of the First Baptist Churchwhere she served on the advisoryboard, flower and music committees.

A native of Newmarket, Mrs. Gamester was a life-long resident here. She was a member of St. Mary'sChurch.

She formerly worked at the Newmarket M.anufactu.r-ing Co. and later was employed in the shoe mdustry illNewmarket.

NEWMARKET - Walter A. Gazda, 66, of PackersFalls Road, died Saturday, March 10, at the MaineMedical Center in Portland after a short illness.

He was born in Newmarket and had lived here all hislife .. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.He was a graduate of the Western PennsylvaniaHorological Institute, class of 1947, Pittsburgh, Pa.

He was a communicant of St. Mary Church; a mem-ber of the Robert G. Durgin Post 67, American Legion;a lifelong member of the American Citizens Club ofPolish Descent, and a member of the WatchmakersInstitute of America.

He was owner and operator for many years of theWalter A. Gazda Watch and Jewelry Store. He also wasan employee of the Locust Street Plant of Kidder Pressof Dover for five years. He was a tool and cutter-grinder at Shop 31 at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Gazda had repaired and maintained the Newmarkettown clock for 36 years. He was the ~idower of EleanorA. (Slepe) Gazda, who died in 1982.

The son of George and Eugenie (Laprise) Gagnon, Msgr.Gagnon was born March 13, 1902 in Nashua.

He earned his bachelor of arts degree from the Houseof Philosophy in Montreal, and attended the Grand Semi-nary, Montreal. . .. .

He was ordained a Roman Cathohc pnest III the DIO-cese of Manchester on June 2, 1928, at St. Joseph Cathe-dral in Manchester by the Most Rev. George A. Guerin,D.D.

In the year following his ordination, his ~ssi&nmentsincluded parish work at Immaculate Conception III Troyand St. Edmund and St. Marie, both in Manchester.

From 1928-45, he served parishes in Hillsboro, Littleton,Berlin and Nashua.

Msgr. Gagnon served as pastor of St. Catherine,Charlestown, from 1945-64. He was then transferred to St.

John the Baptist, Suncook, where he remained until he re-signed from pastoral duties in 1971.

After that, Msgr. Gagnon served as chaplain at St.Charles Home in Rochester, retired in 1985, and lived atSacred Heart in Manchester until 1987, when he moved toMt. Carmel Home. .

In 1961, Msgr. Gagnon was appointed to the DiocesanAdministrative Council, where he served for six years.

In 1962, he was appointed to the Diocesan Board ofExaminers of the Clergy. After his elevation to DomesticPrelate in 1965, assignments included Diocesan Consultorin 1965, 1967 and 1969, and Dean of the Concord Dean-ery in 1969 and 1971.

He was also a member of the Catholic Order of Forest-ers.

Survivors include a sister, Estelle (Mrs. Robert) Loiselleof Newmarket; nieces and nephews.

Msgr. Gagnon was predeceased by a brother, Fr. AlbertGagnon, and a sister, Sr. Florentine. Gagnon, CSc.

Dick was a member of the Alba-core Board of Directors; presidentof the executive committee for theSeacoast Council on Tourism; Mari-time Citizen of the Year; a memberof the city of Portsmouth's Trafficand Safety Committee; MaritimeHeritage Committee; and founderand chairman of the Portsmouth Jazz

Mr. Gelinas was born in Haverhill, Mass., wasgraduated from Haverhill High School and operated hisown barbershop in Railroad Square in Haverhill formore than 40 years. He was the former president andan organizer of the Haverhill Barber's Union,. playedsemi-pro baseball for the Shamrocks Athletic Clubteam in Haverhill and was a communicant of St. JosephChurch in Haverhill. died suddenly after a landscaping accident on Saturday,April 23.

He lived in Medford, Mass. all his life until moving toNewmarket three years ago.

A 1990 graduate of Medford High School, he was ac-tive there in basketball, football and softball. He also at-tended Pinkerton Academy in Derry for two years.

For the last four years, Mr. Gentile worked in landscap-ing and was currently employed by Magado Brothers. Healso had a position with Roto Rooter.

He celebrated his 50th wed-ding anniversary in June 1960.,He served as mail messenger in'Newmarket for 33 years, andmore recently was employed atthe Macallen Co. as a nightwatchman.

and Irma (Hurwitz) Goodrich. A 1973graduate of Exeter Area HighSchool, he resided in New Hampshirefor most of his life, most recently inNewmarket.

He worked at Shaw's Supermarketfor 10 years. Later, he was· self-em-ployed as a computer consultant,forming his own business, Independ-ent Consultants, in North Hampton.Due to ill health, he retired from hisbusiness, and went on to become oneof the state's foremost AIDS activistsand educators.

A former member of the board ofAIDS Response of the Seacoast, hecontinued to be an active supporterof ARS. He was also a member ofPositive Action, a N.H. network forpeople living with HIV infection andAIDS.

He was appointed to the first statetask force on AIDS, under the direc-

t tion of the governor and the state'sHealth and Human Services commis-sioner. He was the first person livingwith AIDS to serve in such a capaci-ty.

Mr. Goodrich was also an educatoron AIDS and HIV infection, speakingto high school and University of NewHampshire students, teachers, andadministrators. He spoke beforemany public and private organiza-tions, and was a key speaker at theState of New Hampshire's first AIDSUnity conference. He also participat-ed in print, television, and radio me-dia helping to educate the publicabout HIV and AIDS.

NEWFIELDS - Herbert A~rant, 74, of Piscassic Roaddied Friday, May 16, at Exeter Hospital.

He was born in Melrose, Mass., on July 13, 1911, theson of Leonard and Elizabeth (Tilton) Grant. He had re-sided in Newfields for 37 years and previously lived inAmesbury, Mass.

He was employed for 19 years by the Baily Co. of Ames-

bury.One ofthe founders of what is now the Kingston-WarrenCorp. of Newfields, Mr. Grant wa.s involved in develop-ment of the roll forming product line. He eventually be-came actively involved in sales and general managementand was president of the corporation from 1965 to 1975.He was appointed chairman of the board from 1975 to thepresent.An active member of the Warren Lodge F&AM of Ames-bury, he served on several town committees in Amesbury

and Newfields, on the advisory board for American Mu-tual for four years, and was an active member of the Holo-vell Lake Association, Sanbornville.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Iva Colby Grantof Newfields; one son, Herbert A. Grant Jr. of Greenland;one daughter, Mrs. (Barbara) William Chick of Newfields;six grandchildren and fOUfgreat-grandchildren; one brother,Leonard Grant, formerly of Exeter; and one sister, Mrs.(Dorothy) George Cunha; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held Friday, May 23 at the Kings-ton-Warren facility on Route 87 in Newfields. Gravesideservices were held at the convenience of the family in theLocust Grove Cemetery in Newfields.

He was chairman for seven years of the Newmarket plan-ning Board; an eight-year member and former chairmanof the town budget committee; and held master plumberand master electrician licenses.

He was co-owner and operator for 22 seasons of Jen'sOcean Manor at Hampton Beach. Mr. Griswold was alsoco-owner of Jen's Real Estate of Newmarket for 20 years.

He was a communicant of St. Mary Church, Newmarket.Survivors include his wife, Jennie J. (Polyott) Griswold

•DURHAM - Bruce G. Grant, 67, of 15 Cowell Drive,

died Wednesday, June 20, 1990, at Massachusetts GeneralHospital in Boston after returning from a visit to Sweden.

Born July 26, 1922, in Dover, the son of John andMadeleine (Clark) Grant, he was a Durham resident formany years. He attended Mt. Herman School, was agraduate of Dover High School and received a bachelorof science degree from the University of New Hampshirein 1945. He received letters in hockey and lacrosse at UNH .

Mr. Grant was a founder of Durham's Downtown Ath-letic Club. He was a longtime supporter of UNH athleticprograms.

He was the former proprietor of Grant's Restaurant onMain Street in Durham.

He served as a Naval aviator in World War II and lateras an instructor for the Navy's OCS program at NewportNaval Station in Rhode Island.

He taught Naval ROTC at Brown University. Whilethere, he started and coached the university's first lacrosseteam. He retired as a lieutenant commander in 1958, after16 years service.

Mr. Grant was a member of Robert G. Durgin AmericanLegion Post No. 67 of Newmarket.

~e was a 32-year veteran of the U.S. Army. He was anative of Durham, a 1950 graduate of Dover High Schooland a 1955 graduate ?fthe University of New Hampshire.

Co!' Grant was an mfantry officer, whose service includ-ed two combat tours in Vietnam.

He was also the Army's chief of public affairs in NewYork City.

His last assignment before retirement in 1985 was as ex-ecutive officer coordinating activity for historical obser-vanc~s. In that ~apacity, he was the primary planner forthe hIg~ly acclaImed 40th anniversary commemorative ofD-Day III Normandy, France in June 1984.

Born June 26, 1904, in Rzcszou, Poland, the daughterof Peter and Agnes (Czepiel) Gula, she had lived inNewmarket for the past 49 years, formerly living in Pat-terson, N.J. and Pawtucket, KI.

She came from Poland in 1922 and worked as a weaverin Pawtucket, later was a silk weaver in Patterson and mov-ed to Newmarket in 1936 where she worked as a silkweaver at the Grant Silk Mill. She was employed in theblacksmith shop at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard duringWorld War II.

She opened the Two Corners Grocery Store in 1953 andoperated it until she retired in 1978.

For many years, she was a member of the AmericanCitizen's Club of Polish Descent and the Polish Women'sCircle and was recording secretary for the Polish NationalAlliance group. She was a member of the NewmarketSenior Citizens.

She was a member of St. Mary Parish.Family members include two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Mar-

chwicka and Mrs. Amelila Skawieska, both of Poland, andtwo brothers, Frank Gula and John Gula, both of Poland.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated last Saturdayat St. Mary Church, with the Rev. John Finnegan, pastor,celebrant. Burial took place in Calvary Cemetery.

She devoted her life to her fam-ily, and the family operated business,The Kingston-Warren Corp. in New-fields.

She was a member and devotedpatron of the Newfields CommunityChurch.

Her husband, Herbert A. Grant,died in 1986.

Karl I Gilbert

(September 3, 1940 - October 25, 2011)

Newmarket - Karl I. Gilbert, 71, died peacefully on October 25, 2011, surrounded

by his family and close friends, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born September 3, 1940 in Brentwood, NH, Karl was the son of Lloyd and Ethel

(Stackpole) Gilbert, and lived most of his life in Newmarket. He graduated from

Winnacunnet High School, Class of 1959, and served in the US Air Force from

1960 – 1964. He was a 41 year member of American Legion and Newmarket

Historical Society.

Karl began his career in law enforcement in the 1960s, working to the rank of

Sergeant with the Newmarket Police Department. He then became Chief of

Police in Greenland until his retirement in 1992. After retirement he worked with

the United States Customs service and the University of New Hampshire Police

Department. He was a proud member of the Retired Police Chief’s Association.

Karl was very active in local government serving on the Budget Committee, Town Council, Cemetery Trustees, Veteran’s

Memorial Trust Committee, and for many years serving on the School Board. He volunteered as a Boy Scout Leader,

worked at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, and served as State Representative for several years.

Karl enjoyed genealogy and raising homing pigeons. He talked often about his many big game hunts out West. He always

loved trying new hobbies and jobs, retirement was not in his vocabulary. Karl’s passion for life, learning, service to

community, friends and family fulfilled him.

He is survived by Doris (Vermette) Gilbert, his beloved wife of 48 years; three children, Scott and wife Kathy of Loudon,

Richard and wife Maryellen of Newmarket, Katherine and husband Ken Jones of Newmarket; his treasured

grandchildren, Sarah, Kelley, Henry, Katelyn and fiancé Graham Chaffe, and Rebecca; brothers and sister, David, Robert,

Joella and Lloyd.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

Private burial will take place at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen.

Should friends desire memorials may be made to the N.H State Veteran’s Cemetery, Boscawen, NH or the Hyder Family
