Dear Parents
“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”
Eleanor Roosevelt
Dear Parents/Guardians
Often quoted words by Eleanor Roosevelt, but words which reflect what many of our Grade 7s and staff who are retiring are involved in: dreaming and thinking about the future. The next few days will see many “last of” moments, and I (and the staff) look forward to sharing these special moments with everyone concerned.
The next few days will see a multitude of activities taking place: Musical Recitals, SP Art exhibitions, Dads and Lads Cricket, Grade 00, 0 and 1 Orientation morning, Grade 7 Leavers’ Week programme, Carol Services, Final assemblies, SP Prize Giving…the list is an exciting and endless one!
After nearly 18 years at Clifton Notties, my PA Mrs Colleen Bosse, leaves behind a significant legacy at Clifton as she retires at the end of the year. I am delighted to announce that Mrs Linsey (Ling) Wynne has been appointed as my Personal Assistant from 2020. Ling brings with her many years of experience…as well as being a passion parent of a Clifton Notties. Both her children are/were pupils at Clifton Notties. I am also very pleased to welcome Mr Hala Xulu onto our permanent staff. Having been an intern for the past few years at Clifton and now a qualified teacher, Mr Xulu has played an invaluable role in our sporting programme and in the Sports’ Department. He will responsible for the Physical Education programme/curriculum of our children as well as involved in teaching some isiZulu classes. I look forward to his contribution.
The calendar for Term 1 2020 will be made available in the days ahead. There are some new changes of traditional times of meetings. ‘The devil is in the detail” as they say. I will highlight the important changes.
I wish you many happy minutes/hours as you attend the various functions with your children and family in the next few days. These are moments to treasure. We look forward to sharing them with you.

GRADE 00 & GRADE 0 NATIVITY CONCERT
Mrs Mary Crawford writes”
“Our Clifton Cubs took to the stage for their annual Nativity Concert on Friday 15 November. As always, the hall
was bursting with excited family and friends, keen to get a glimpse of their little stars on the stage.
The cast was tremendous with their delightful sense of humour being apparent. Beautiful singing, instrumentals
and some theatrical moments formed part of the Show. This ensured that this special morning was thoroughly
enjoyed by everyone. This amazing story was so wonderfully portrayed by the children.”

GRADE 1 OUTING TO DURBAN
Mrs Jo Fly writes:
“On Thursday 07 November, there was excitement in the air as the Grade 1 children set off on their much
anticipated trip to the coast.
We were there as uShaka opened its doors and were taken off on a guided tour through the aquarium. The
guide hardly got a word in, as our very knowledgeable and enthusiastic children were bursting to share their
facts learnt during our term of ‘Rocky shore’ theme work. Seeing
everything come to life was really special and their eagerness was
such a joy to witness.
Once through the aquarium, the children were treated to a
wonderful Dolphin show and were reminded just how important
recycling is, in order to avoid sending plastics into our precious
oceans. The children loved cooling off at the adjoining ‘Splish Splash
Sprinkler Island’ where they also got the chance to go on numerous
slides and shoot water at the people cruising down the lazy river!
A picnic lunch on the promenade, ice-creams and a
walk on the pier, were the perfect end to an action
packed day.
Despite lots of exhausted children, they were up bright
and early ready for another fun-filled day. We had a
fantastic time at Crocworld, where the children
watched the huge crocodiles being fed, as well as
hearing about their oldest crocodile who will be 119
later this year! The children learnt so much and were
each able to hold a tiny crocodile, which really was
something unique.
The children were well behaved and made us so proud. What a credit to their wonderful families who were
waiting with open arms to see their precious little ones on our return.”

GRADE 2 OUTING TO WAGON DRIFT DAM
Mrs Sue Rindfleisch writes:
“There was great excitement on Wednesday morning 06 November, as we left for our trip to Wagon Drift. We
arrived at the dam to find two speed boats waiting to take us across the dam to our camp site.
The two days there were filled with fun activities as the children enjoyed a scavenger hunt, stalk the lantern, a
very challenging obstacle course, charades and a variety of team challenges. In between all that, time was made
for swimming in the dam. Friday morning came quickly and all too soon it was time to head home….tired but
happy!”

GRADE 3 OUTING TO THE MICHAELHOUSE SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
Mrs Fleischack writes: “Our outing on 06 November proved to be a lot of fun! Some children donned lab coats and safety goggles and assisted Mr Matthew Higginson (HOD of Science) with the experiments. Mr Higginson showed the children how exciting Science is by conducting many noisy, fiery, stinky and smoky experiments. One young budding scientist was heard to say, “I don’t know much about Science, but I love it!”
GRADE 3 CHRISTMAS CAFE
Mrs Laura Fleischack writes:
“What a wonderful way for the Grade 3s to end off their exciting year in the Junior School. The children invited the Grade 2s and their teachers to a Christmas Café. Before the big day, they had to meet in groups, co-ordinate everything, decide on menus and send out the invitations. They then had to plan the food, drinks, table décor, cutlery and crockery, etc. The buzz on Thursday was one of excitement as the chefs cooked, the barmen made up the drinks and the waiters served. I am sure the children will offer some insight when their families are planning Christmas dinner this year!”

GRADE 3 ORIENTATION DAY
Mrs Nikki Stokes writes:
“A first for our grade, as we invited the Grade 3s to join us for a morning in Grade 4. The morning was hosted by the Grade 4 children themselves and they gave the Grade 3s a tour of all the areas that they will go to next year. They did a lesson on fire safety and shared their experiences of their Grade 4 year. There were tips on how to enjoy Grade 4 and I’m sure a few pieces of inside information about us teachers were shared too!
We had hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows in top woods to end our morning together. Mrs Jonker was there to help with the fires and re-inforce the fire safety rules. It was a lovely way to introduce the Grade 3s to their new home for 2020 and we were thrilled that some of the children who will be new to Clifton could join us too.”

FROM THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT
Ms Cathryn Calitz writes:
“On Wednesday, the Clifton Band, Choir and three Marimba bands performed for the elderly residents at Amberglen. It was a wonderful concert that was thoroughly enjoyed by both the children and the residents of Amberglen.”

FROM THE ARTS DEPARTMENT
Dr Spencer writes:
“It has been a busy time in Art recently. Our annual Senior Primary Showcase opens this Friday 22 November at
5.30 for 6.00pm. There will be work on display in the foyer and upstairs classroom in the Expressive Arts
building. We are so excited to be able to share the childrens’ work with you.
Select projects from all Senior Primary children (Grade 4 - 7) are on display. One of the feature walls comprises
wonderful circular format designs created by Grade 5 children whose task was to promote clean air and
oceans. The Grade 5s learned that artworks and creativity can be used to promote important ideas, as well as
performing a decorative function. They could choose to demonstrate the cause by focusing on what was desired
(a healthy environment); or by demonstrating the consequences of pollution; or by showing both things in a
split composition. The children conducted lots of research to find the images each wanted to make their work
unique and their message clear. This special project is just one of the many beautiful creative tasks on display.
A few of our dedicated Art Club children were able to visit a printmaking studio recently to print their linocuts
on a proper printing press. It was lots of fun turning the wheel and creating prints and embosses with this
impressive machine!”

“On Sunday 10 November, we held the Clifton Boys’ Championships here at Clifton. All the children who
participated are to be congratulated on their sportsmanship, marking skills and standard of play. Savannah
Ingledew was our Guest of Honour. Currently the South African No. 1 U14 squash player, Savannah inspired our
players with her very impressive resume which I put up in the court. She helped organize the Tournament and
gave the children positive feedback which was very helpful. Savannah then handed out the trophies, which
were originally donated by her father, Norman Ingledew, to the Clifton champions of 2019.
