Chuck Long has been synonymous with University of Iowa football
for more than thirty years. As a former player and coach, his combina-
8on of charm, charisma and winning a9tude has mo8vated many
young athletes and influenced mul8tudes of fans throughout the Mid-
west and beyond.
Born in Norman, Oklahoma and raised in Wheaton, Illinois, Chuck
a)ended Wheaton North High School and played football, basketball
and baseball. He led his team to the 1979 state football 8tle as the
star8ng quarterback and was named to the all-state championship
squad. He also gathered all-state honors in 1980.
Chuck starred at quarterback for Coach Hayden Fry and the Iowa
Hawkeyes from 1981-85. For his career, he threw for 10,461 yards, the
first Big Ten player and second player in college football history to
throw for more than 10,000 yards, played in five bowl games and holds nearly every Hawkeyes
passing record. During his final season in ‘85, he led the Hawks to the Rose Bowl and finished
second to Bo Jackson in the Heisman race. He was named Big Ten Player of the Year, received
the Davey O'Brien Award (na8on’s best quarterback) and Maxwell Award (college player of the
year) and was named a first team Consensus All-American.
Selected by Detroit as the 12th overall pick in the 1986 NFL dra, Chuck played eight years
of professional ball – seven with the Lions and one with the Los Angeles Rams.
He began his coaching career in 1995 at his alma mater, first as the defensive backs coach and
then quarterbacks and special teams. Chuck’s sixteen-year coaching career included posi8ons
with the country’s other top college football programs including the University of Oklahoma

2000 na8onal champions, San Diego State University, and the University of Kansas. One of Chuck’s proudest accom-
plishments was as offensive coordinator for Oklahoma in 2003, the year Sooner QB Jason White won the Heisman
Trophy.
Chuck was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999 and is an inaugural member of the Kinnick Stadium
Wall of Honor. He transi8oned out of coaching in 2013 and is currently the CEO/Execu8ve Director of the Iowa Sports
Founda8on and an analyst for the Big Ten Network. In 2017, he and Aaron Putze co-authored “Des8ned for Great-
ness – the Story of Chuck Long and Resurgence of Iowa Hawkeyes Football” available now at Amazon.com and vari-
ous retailers.
Jan. 9, 2019 – Hawkeyes Great Chuck Long will share stories of his football life and career and sign copies of his just-
released biography Desned for Greatness during a special noon mee8ng of the North Sco) Rotary Club.
Long, who played quarterback for the Iowa Hawkeyes from 1981-85 and holds numerous school, Big-Ten and
na8onal passing records, will autograph and personalize copies of Desned for Greatness, greet and join in photos
with guests and share memories of playing for Hawkeyes football coaches Hayden Fry and Kirk Ferentz.
The event will begin at noon with Chuck Long’s program beginning at 12:30 p.m. He’ll sign books and join in with
photos immediately following the presenta8on. Hardbound and sobound copies of Des8ned for Greatness will be
available for $30 and $20 respec8vely (personalized copies make a great gi!).
Desned for Greatness, authored by Aaron Putze of Waukee, tells the story of Long’s remarkable career and the
1980s resurgence of the University of Iowa Football program. The one-of-a-kind journey is an inspiring one—from
starring on the neighborhood playground as a youth growing up in Wheaton, Illinois (affec8onately named “The Tot
Lot”) to his current role as CEO & Execu8ve Director of the Iowa Sports Founda8on.
The fast-paced narra8ve recounts the highs and lows of the Iowa football program’s struggle to reclaim na8onal
relevancy while Iowans endured the pain of the 1980s farm crisis. It also retraces the path from starring in Kinnick to
the challenges Chuck faced in compe8ng in the NFL, including his first start under the lights on a Monday night contest
versus the defending Super Bowl Champion Chicago Bears.
Desned for Greatness includes personal accounts from coaches Fry and Kirk Ferentz, Iowa teammates Hap Peter-
son, Jonathan Hayes and Mark Vlasic, John Campbell (former KCRG-TV Sports Director), Marc Hansen (former Des
Moines Register columnist) and former Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad.
Long holds the University of Iowa’s marks for yards passing, comple8ons, touchdown passes and total offense
(game, season and career) and pass a)empts in a season and career. He is sll, more than three decades aer his col-
lege career ended, the most accurate passer in Big Ten History (.649).

+ + + Volunteers for Tryke Build:
LAST WEEK – January 18, 2019 – Gary Thrapp; Beyond the Baseline
Seventy-four attended on Friday. Guests were Rotarians Mark Carlson, Moline Rotary and Brian Williams, Illinois QC Rotary. Additional guests were Alex Rechkimar and Ty Grunder, guests of Pat Olsen, Jason Happel, guest of Scott Case, Laura Hansen, guest of Fred Mulch and Connie Connolly, guest of Chris Connolly.
Kelly Meyer thanked everyone that volunteered for the Special Olympics, but unfortunately the events have been cancelled due to the pending winter storm. Jeff Ashcraft asked for additional volunteers for the February 9 Tryke build. Some additional units have arrived, so more help is needed. Greg Schaapveld encouraged members to attend the Quad City Storm Hockey game on February 15. He will have tickets for sale for the next few weeks.
Pat Olsen promoted the 50th anniversary of HDC and asked for volunteers to put signs in their yards. Donn Wilmott told about the danceathon at the Boll’s Center in Princeton Saturday evening. Josie Seymour was the sergeant and collected $63 in fines.
Gary Thrapp is the owner of Beyond the Baseline and Founder and Director of multiple youth sports programs in Davenport. He sees the good, bad and ugly in kids when they are in the gym. Bullying is SO BAD in the gym environment and negative language. A lot of the kids today that come to his gym are raised on social media and rap music. They have no job skills, no attention span and no father figure in their lives. They learn violence at home and from their friends.
All sixth and ninth graders from the Davenport schools come to Beyond the Baseline to attend a Quad City Youth Summit. Counse-lors work with the youth to reduce violence. Many youth basketball, volleyball and wrestling events and tournaments take place at Beyond the Baseline.
The 4 Way Test Of the things we THINK SAY or DO
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
