Basic Facts from…JOSHUA by Dave Rogers
Joshua is first book in the bible named after a per-son. The man for whom it is named was the successor to Moses, a general and great leader in his own right. He had been one of the original twelve “spies” who surveyed the land of Canaan (Numbers 13). This book picks up the thread of Israel’s story from the end of Deuteronomy, and tells of the conquest and the division of the promised land.
Chapter 1 begins with the “formal” appointment of Joshua as the nation’s leader and commander. In verses 7-8 God tells Joshua in no uncertain terms that his “key to success” would be doing everything God’s law required, with no wavering to the right or left. Christians are in-structed to fulfill the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2 & James 2:8), and God does not invite us to “amend” or alter His will! The very next verse (Joshua 1:9) is God’s promise to be with Joshua so long as he obeys Him; the Lord expects Christians to obey Him as well (see Galatians 3:1 & 5:7, and Hebrews 5:9).
In Joshua 5:2-9, the new generation of Israelite men had to be circumcised before God would let them to enter the land. They absolutely had to fulfill the requirements of their covenant before they could receive His blessing (even though it was painful, and “not their fault” that their parents had been slack about this during the wilderness wanderings). Christians cannot afford to make excuses for not obeying God’s word; instead, we ought to be zeal-ous about making sure that we do it, Titus 2:14!
A new generation of spies is sent into the Promised Land in chapter 6, and we are introduced to Rahab the har-lot who protected them. Some commentators assert that she was merely an innkeeper but virtually all bible transla-tions describe her with the words “harlot” or “prostitute.” Some Christians struggle with the idea that God could use such a woman for His own noble purpose, but the incident shows God can use any person who is willing to have faith in Him, regardless of background. Note that after the spies rescued her during the conquest of Jericho (vs. 25), the bible says “…she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day.” The spies had promised to spare her and her family, so they were obligated to rescue her (vv. 22-25) – God like-
wise expects Christians to keep their promises!
There is a very important prophecy in Joshua 6:26, relating to anyone who would rebuild Jericho. This place was cursed, but Hiel the Bethelite lost his oldest and youngest sons (1 Kings 16:34) by defying the command-ment to let the ruins of Jericho alone.
Israel’s shocking military defeat at Ai (Joshua 7) em-phasizes the importance of getting sin “out of the camp.” Achan, an Israelite soldier, looted some of the riches of Jericho instead of obeying God’s instruction to destroy them. Because of his greed 36 innocent Hebrew soldiers died before his sin was exposed. The deaths of Achan and his family (by stoning) might seem like a harsh pun-ishment, but they were directly responsible for the deaths of those men. The lesson for us (vv. 1, 11-15, & 25-26) is to “get sin out of the camp” if we want to receive blessings from God. Too often we try to reverse the equation, only offering to stop sinning after God starts blessing us; but God doesn’t work that way!
The important lesson of Joshua 9:3-15 is that even a godly man sometimes makes mistakes. Joshua failed to ask God about the Gibeonites before making an agreement with them, and his oversight later came back to haunt his people when these idolators proved to be a corrupting influ-ence in Israel. James emphasized a very similar point in James 4:15, writing to Christians that, “…ye ought to say, ‘If the Lord will,’ we shall live, and do this, or that.”
The words of Joshua 11:23 combine with those of chapters 21:43-45 and 23:14 to demonstrate that God keeps His promises! In chapter eleven, He speaks of the “land promise” as already fulfilled, even though Israel was still in the process of conquering Canaan. Joshua’s words in chapters 21 and 23 stress the fact that God’s promise was completely fulfilled, leaving no land “yet to be re-ceived.” In chapter 22:5-6, Joshua emphasizes to the tribes of Reuben, Gad and Manasseh (the “trans-Jordanic” tribes) that obedience must combine with faith in order to produce the blessings of God, and finally in chapter 24:14-15 he emphasizes to the whole nation that they must make up their minds to “stick with God” in order to con-tinue enjoying His blessings.
