Dear Friends, Where to begin……. not a bad start to the summer with the residents of
Chamberlain and Cluny Lodge enjoying afternoons spent relaxing in the sunshine, day
trips to the seaside, afternoon tea on the Ratho barge as they meandered along the
Union canal; and a little more adventurous, a trip to the Falkirk wheel, one of Scotland’s
finest feats of engineering, which connects the Union canal with the forth and Clyde
canals. Despite being attacked by those pesky Scottish midges a wonderful afternoon was
had. The Therapy Ponies where back much to the delight of both the residents of
Chamberlain and Cluny; they spent a morning visiting and were as popular as always
promising to come back again soon! - Elder Homes were delighted to be given the
opportunity by John and Elaine Sangster, the owners of Therapy Ponies Scotland, to
sponsor a visit to Robin House, the children’s hospice on 18th
July 2019, sharing the
delight and joy these special little ponies bring.
One of the highlights of the last few months (and there have been many) was a visit from
Theatre Presto who entertained the residents of both Chamberlain and Cluny Lodge with
a hilarious rendition of Shakespeare’s “A Mid Summers Night Dream.” There was not a
dry eye in the house, and that was from tears of laughter! Did I mention that we were in
the Evening News on Friday 26th
July? We were very pleased and honoured to be included
in the celebrations marking the 125th
anniversary of the Blackpool Tower; we were
treated to afternoon cream tea and dance lessons (Strictly Comes To Cluny Lodge) from
some of the promotions’ team who visited us here in Cluny, bringing back memories of
trips to Blackpool, a tradition especially over the Edinburgh September weekend.
Chamberlain and Cluny Lodge held their annual Strawberry Afternoon Tea Parties. Both
occasions were a great success, with family and friends joining the summer celebration in
record numbers. In amongst all of that, many an afternoon concert, some classical, whilst
others were just a good old sing along and a wee dance which were also enjoyed.
August is shaping up to be as busy but fun, with days out to the Kelpies and an
opportunity for those who missed out on the last trip to the Falkirk wheel, as well as
afternoon tea on the Bo’ness steam train with much more to come.
Let’s have a look at what is happening around Chamberlain and Cluny Lodge;
Staff News
Purple Bicycle Project
Several months ago, the staff from Elder Homes took part in this project run by Faith in
Older People and Life Changes Trust. It was a really interesting exercise and helped us to
see the importance of Spiritual care for all of those who we support.
The project highlighted person centered care and the importance of finding the `key` to
someone`s individuality, not necessarily in religion but in whatever is right for them.
These are principles we at Elder Homes have been trying to work with, but it has been an
interesting journey to see what else we can do to make this possible for all who are
associated with Elder Homes Ltd.
Let me Introduce to you:
RN Cheryl Henderson, Dementia Specialist and Education Co-ordinator for Elder Homes
For those of you who have not met Cheryl Henderson and are not aware of her role, she
would be more than happy to speak to you about dementia and the training staff receive,
at any time. Either ask reception to contact her or email [email protected]
Building Alterations & Decorating

The ongoing landscaping of the front garden at Cluny Lodge should be coming to an end
by the middle of August; this will include the replacement of all the slabs at the front of
