El pretérito y el imperfecto

El pretérito y el imperfecto no son intercambiables. The choice between

these two tenses depends on the context and on the point of view of the speaker.

Usos del pretérito To express actions that are viewed by the

speaker as completed.

To express the beginning or end of a past action.

To narrate a series of past actions or events.

Don Francisco estacionó el autobús.Fueron a Valparaíso ayer. La película empezó a las nueve.Ayer terminé el proyecto. Don Francisco paró el autobús, abrió la

ventanilla y saludó a doña Rita.

Usos del imperfecto

To describe an on-going past action with no reference to its beginning or end.

To express habitual past actions and events.

To describe mental, physical, and emotional states or conditions.

Maité conducía muy rápido en Madrid.

Javier esperaba en el garaje.

Cuando era joven, jugaba al tenis.

Álex siempre revisaba su correo electrónico a las tres.

La chica quería descansar. Se sentía mal y tenía dolor de cabeza.

Ellos eran altos y tenían ojos verdes.

Estábamos felices de ver a la familia.

When the preterite and the imperfect appear in the same sentence, the imperfect describes what was happening, and the preterite describes the action that interrupted the on-going activity.

Navegaba en la Red cuando sonó el teléfono.

Maité leía el periódico cuando llegó Álex.

El pretérito y el imperfecto are often used together in lengthy narratives such as fiction stories and news stories. The imperfect provides the background information, such as the time, the weather, and the location. The preterite indicates the specific events.

Eran las dos de la mañana y el detective ya no podía mantenerse despierto. Se bajó lentamente del coche, estiró las piernas y levantó los brazos hacia el cielo oscuro.

La luna estaba llena y no había en el cielo ni una sola nube. De repente, el detective escuchó un grito espeluznante proveniente del parque.
