El Pretérito = the past tense

• The preterit expresses action done in the past

• The action happened ONCE (for a specific amount of time)

Ex. I walked to the store The phone rang The dog barked

La formación del pretérito

• Step 1: Chop off the –ar, -er, -ir from the infinitive

• Step 2: Add the appropriate ending to the root (or stem) that matches the subject

Ex. I spoke on the phone Yo hablé por teléfono (hablar – ar + é = hablé)
