H ace 50 años, el fallecido bioquímico y es-critor de ciencia ficción Isaac Asimov, real-izó algunas predicciones sobre cómo sería

el mundo en el 2014, durante la celebración de la Feria Mundial de Nueva York en 1964.

Sus comentarios (abreviados en aproxi-madamente 10 predicciones) fueron publi-cados en el diario The New York Times, y hoy causa asombro que la mayoría de ellos sean una realidad.

El panorama que Asimov (de origen soviético, nacionalizado estadounidense) vislumbró, contenía una serie de avances tecnológicos que nos facilitarían la vida, “librándolos de labores tediosas como la prepación de alimentos”.

Es verdad que ya contamos con inu-merables electrodomésticos inalámbricos (mismos que Asimov también mencionó) que simplifican el tiempo de preparación de nuestras comidas (cafeteras, hornos de mi-crondas, etc), pero igualmente es cierto que en Estados Unidos, muchas familias están regresando a los principios de cultivar sus propias hortalizas y comer sanamente.

De hecho, ésa es una de las principales propuestas de la Primera Dama, Michelle Obama, quien en julio del 2013 compartió con líderes hispanos su preocupación por la obesidad y diabetes infantil.

Fue en su discurso en la Conferencia Anu-al del Consejo Nacional de La Raza (NCLR) que Michelle Obama señaló que “cerca del 40 por ciento de los niños hispanos en este país tiene sobrepeso o es obeso”, haciendo un llamado especial para apoyar su inicia-tiva llamada Let’s Move!, y el propio pro-grama del NCLR, Comer Bien.

MiPlato y La Mesa Completa, son otras propuestas del Departamento de Agricultura estadounidense que promueven la educación de las familias y la mejora de los alimentos que consumimos, por lo que las investigacio-nes en el 2014 continuarán centrándose en la nutrición y la dieta, y en estados como Ne-braska, veremos un aumento en el consumo de los alimentos cultivados localmente así como su preservación, gracias al trabajo de organizaciones no lucrativas enfocadas en el bienestar comunitario.

Hablando de una mejor calidad de vida, durante el evento de 1964, Asimov habló de la inteligencia artificial que haría realidad los robots que ayudarían en tareas domésti-cas, y aunque en este 2014 la empresa IMB dará a conocer una creación semejante, nada podrá sustituir al hombre en la propia tarea de ejercitarse.

Si bien Asimov se adelantó muchísimo a su tiempo al predecir las diferentes variedades en el uso de la luz, y las comunicaciones diciendo en pleno 1964 que en el 2014 éstas “incluirán imagen además de sonido” y que “la pantalla no sólo se usará para ver a la persona a la que has llamado sino que también te permitirá es-tudiar documentos y fotografías, además de permitir la lectura de libros”, estamos seguros de que él jamás pensó en la importancia inega-ble que alcanzarían las redes sociales.

El uso constante del Twitter, Facebook, Ins-tagram y otras más, generó cambios increíbles en áreas como la cultura y el entrenimiento. Ahora son los propios protagonistas los que postean sus imágenes y hasta se convierten en periodistas, grabando videos y haciendo

denuncias públicas. No sólo los medios de co-municación, sino hasta las galerías y museos más conservadores, seguirán fomentando la interactividad con su público mediante sus in-contables mensajes en internet.

En el 2014 seguirán su “reinado” los celulares y las tabletas, y así mismo conseguirán posicio-narse aún más, los lentes y las pulseras inteli-gentes, con lo que se seguirán modificando los canales publicitarios hasta ahora utlizados.

Usted se acostumbrará cada vez más por ejemplo, a leer en nuestra publicación sobre algún restaurante o tienda, y a comentar sobre sus experiencias y los servicios en dicho lugar, ya sea en su página personal o en el portal del propio establecimiento.

Y a propósito de la lectura, la literatura uni-versal celebrará este 2014 el 450 aniversario del nacimiento del escritor británico William Shakespeare, y Asimov (fallecido en 1992) estaría complacido al saber que seguiremos compartiendo sus obras leyéndolas hasta en la pantalla de nuestro dispositivo electrónico o disfrutando de las adaptaciones de “Romeo y Julieta”, en pantallas gigantes de 3D… ¡algo que él también predijo en 1964!.

5 0 years ago, late biochemist and sci-ence fiction writer Isaac Asimov made some predictions, about how the world

would be in the year 2014, during the New York World Fair in 1964.

His comments (summarized in around 10 predictions) were published in The New York Times, and are now a source of amazement because most of them have be-come a reality.

The future cast by Asimov (he of Soviet origin, who eventually became a citizen of the United States), featured several tech-nological breakthroughs that would make our lives easier by “freeing us from tedious tasks, such as cooking a meal.”

It is true that we now have several wire-less appliances (which Asimov mentioned) that make it easier to cook our meals (coffee makers, microwave ovens, etc.), but it is also true that in the United States, several fami-lies are going back to harvesting their own fruits and vegetables in order to eat healthy.

Actually, that is one of Michelle Obama’s proposals, who shared her concern in regard to obesity and child diabetes when she talked with several Latino leaders on July 2013.

It was during her speech at the Annual Con-ference for the National Council of La Raza (Conferencia Anual del Consejo Nacional de La Raza - or NCLR), that Michelle Obama said “close to 40 percent of all Latino children in this country are overweight or obese,” thus asking everyone to support her Let’s Move! initiative, as well as the Eat Well (Comer Bien) program from the NCLR.

My Meal (Mi Plato) and The Full Table (La Mesa Completa) are other options presented by the U.S. Department of Agriculture which promote the education of families to improve the kind of meals people eat, which is why research during 2014 will continue to focus on improving diets and nutrition, and in States such as Nebraska, we see an increase in the consumption of locally grown food to improve its preservation, thanks to the work of non-profit organizations that focus on the wellbeing of the community.

Speaking of a better quality of life, dur-ing the aforementioned 1964 event, Asimov spoke about how artificial intelligence would allow robots to help us in our day to day tasks, and even though in 2014 IMB will unveil something similar in concept, nothing will be able to take man’s place in the physical need for the task itself.

Even if Asimov did predict well ahead of his time how there would eventually be several uses for light, and how communi-cations would “include images as well as sound” and how “the screen would not only be used to see the person you’re calling, but also to study documents and photographs and to read books,” we’re certain that he never imagined the importance of social media in our lives.

The constant use of Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and many others has generated incredible changes in culture and enter-

tainment. People star in their own stories, posting images as they go, and they even be-come journalists while recording videos and making public denouncements. Not only media outlets, but also event the most con-servative galleries and museums, will con-tinue to interact with their audience with all the tools provided by the internet.

In 2014, cellphones and tablets will contin-ue to “rule over all,” and we will see the rise of smart bracelets and glasses that will change how publicity is presented to consumers.

You will get more and more used to, say, reading in our newspaper about a restau-rant or store, and then commenting on your personal page or on said establishment’s own website about your experience there.

And speaking of reading, in 2014 all of lit-erature will celebrate the 450th anniversary of British writer William Shakespeare, and Asimov (who passed away in 1992) would be pleased to know that we still share his work, reading on the screen of our electronic de-vice, or enjoying film adaptations of “Ro-meo and Juliet” in huge 3D screens… just as he predicted in 1964!

comunidades a través de Ne-braska se centraron en una variedad de temas sociales y políticos en el 2013. Se es-pera un enfoque similar en el 2014 debido al hecho de que el Congreso aún no ha abordado

temas muy importantes que afectarán a millones de estadounidenses en todo el país. Temas importantes incluyendo la política de inmigración y reformas de la economía de los Estados Unidos tomaran el centro del escenario este próximo año.

En 2013, el Senado de los Estados Unidos aprobó legislación bipartidista que tuvo como objetivo abordar el sistema roto de inmigración en los Es-tados Unidos. La Cámara de Representantes de los Estados Unidos-dirigida por republicanos enfoca-dos en detener la reforma integral de inmigración no fueron capaces de aprobar la reforma de inmi-gración en el año 2013 . A principios del año, duran-te una reunión abierta a principios de septiembre, el congresista Lee Terry indicó a la comunidad local de Omaha que sus colegas tendrían poco oxígeno para enfrentarse al tema de la inmigración en los últimos meses del año 2013, sobre todo porque

tenían otros asuntos importantes que tratar con la inclusión del techo de deuda y Siria, entre otros problemas, los que se necesitaban abordar con rapi-dez. Esto hace que muchos tengan la esperanza de que el Congreso finalmente tomará la iniciativa para apoyar una reforma completa en el 2014. Con las elecciones legislativas que se llevarán a cabo en noviembre de 2014, muchos candidatos tratarán de cortejar el voto latino. Esto significará que candida-tos tendrán que responder ante el electorado latino y prometer apoyar la reforma si quieren ganar el voto hispano cuando llegue el momento de las elecciones.

La inmigración fue el único tema que se abordará en el 2014. El Congreso se enfrentará a la tarea de aprobar un proyecto de ley agrícola, el aumento del techo de la deuda, y hacer frente a las prestaciones de desempleo de largo plazo, entre otros problemas.

Beneficios de empleo se han convertido reci-entemente en un gran problema para muchos. De hecho, el presidente Obama y muchos estadoun-idenses se indignaron con el Congreso por su in-capacidad para extender los beneficios de desem-pleo a millones de estadounidenses antes de salir a vacaciones de Navidad. Muchos tienen la esperan-za que el Congreso se ocupará de las prestaciones

de desempleo en el año nuevo para ayudar a dis-minuir los efectos de las dificultades económicas que afectan a las familias en todo el país.

También se espera que las reformas relacionadas con el estado de la economía de los EE.UU. dom-inen la escena política en el 2014. Durante un reci-ente discurso el presidente Obama señaló que los EE.UU. debe centrarse en el crecimiento de nuestra economía, la expansión de oportunidades y la con-strucción de una América que ofrece a todos una oportunidad justa para tener éxito. Obama indicó que si “el Congreso sigue actuando en el espíritu de cooperación que hemos visto en las últimas sema-nas” el confía que “podemos hacer mucho más pro-greso juntos en el año por venir.”

Muchas organizaciones sin fines de lucro locales tomaron un papel fundamental en la educación del público general en el 2013 sobre estos temas y muchos otros. Las organizaciones locales ya están trabajando duro en la preparación para hacer frente a una multitud de problemas sociales y políticos que tendrán que abordar en el 2014. Será un año de mucho trabajo para la comunidad local y para la nación entera.

braska focused on a vari-ety of social and political issues in 2013. A similar focus is expected in 2014 due to the fact that Con-gress has yet to address

very important issues that will affect millions of Americans across the country. Hot topic political issues including immigration policy and reforms for the U.S economy are expect-ed to take center stage the upcoming year.

In 2013, the United States Senate passed bi-partisan legislation that aimed to ad-dress the broken immigration system in the U.S. The republican-led U.S House of Representatives took it upon themselves to stall this immigration reform and com-prehensive immigration policies were un-able to make it through in 2013. Earlier in

the year during a townhall meeting in early September, Congressman Lee Terry warned the local Omaha community that his col-leagues would have little oxygen to address immigration in the last months of 2013, especially since they had other important issues to deal with including the debt ceil-ing and Syria among other problems, those which needed to be addressed quickly. This makes many hopeful that Congress will fi-nally take the initiative to push for a com-plete overhaul in 2014. With the mid-term elections set to take place in November 2014, many politicians will seek to court the Latino vote. This will mean candidates will have to answer to the Latino elector-ate and promise to push for reform if they want to earn the Hispanic vote come elec-tion time.

Immigration is not the only issue that will be addressed in 2014. Congress will be faced with the task of tackling a new farm bill, increasing the debt ceiling, and deal-ing with long-term unemployment benefits among other problems.

Employment benefits have recently be-come a big issue for many. In fact, Presi-dent Obama and many Americans were outraged with Congress for their failure to extend unemployment benefits to millions of Americans before leaving on Christmas vacation. Many are hopeful that Congress will address unemployment benefits in the New Year to help lessen the effects of the economic hardships affecting families across the nation.

Reforms addressing the state of the U.S economy are also expected to dominate the political scene in 2014. During a re-

cent speech President Obama pointed out that the U.S must focus on growing our economy, expanding opportunity and con-structing an America that offers everyone a fair shot at success. Obama indicated that if “Congress continues to act in the spirit of cooperation we’ve seen in recent weeks,” he is confident “we can make much more progress together in the year to come.”

Many local non-profit organizations played a critical role in educating the gen-eral public in 2013 on these issues and many others. Local organizations are al-ready hard at work preparing to deal with a multitude of social and political issues that will have to be addressed in 2014. It will be a busy year for the local community and for the nation.

“Algo que no cambiaría para nada en mi tra-bajo, es la oportunidad que me brinda de atender las necesidades de nuestra gente.

No sólo se trata de abrirles una cuenta, venderles un producto o uno de nuestros servicios, sino de ayudarlos a desarrollarse y ver hasta dónde puede llegar su potencial”, expresó Rigo Pérez-Fuentes, Asistente de Gerencia de First National Bank en su locación de la Calle 24 en el Sur de Omaha.

Pérez-Fuentes comenzó su carrera en el First National Bank en 1999: “Mi primer empleo fue como cajero, y con paciencia y trabajando duro, subí hasta donde estoy ahora”.

Originario del estado mexicano de Chihua-hua, Pérez-Fuentes viajó por primera vez a Esta-dos Unidos en los ochentas, para visitar a uno de sus hermanos quien radicaba en Delaware.

“Después regresé para trabajar y aunque era un lugar muy bonito - explicó Pérez-Fuentes -, yo me sentía muy lejos de mi familia, así que me mudé a Texas, con la idea de encontrar trabajo en El Paso y estar cerca de mis padres”.

Viviendo ahí le surgió la oportunidad de via-jar a Omaha, colaborando con una compañía que traía personas a trabajar a dicha ciudad: “Comencé en una empacadora, luego en su De-partamento de Recursos Humanos y finalmente entré en contacto con otras empresas que se dedicaban a reclutar personal, así que yo servía como guía a los trabajadores que llegaban y no conocían nada de Omaha”. Son ya 20 años los que tiene Pérez-Fuentes en este país, y aunque al

principio Nebraska no era un estado muy atrac-tivo para él: “Aquí me sentí más libre, era como vivir en México, con menos estrés, y la vida era más barata que en Delaware. Además me impre-sionó que muchos hispanos eran dueños de sus casas y tenían su propio negocio, algo que en ése entonces no se veía tanto en otras partes. Cu-riosamente, mi esposa también es de Chihuahua pero la conocí aquí, y aquí nos casamos y forma-mos una familia”.

Además de su labor en la institución bancaria, Pérez-Fuentes igualmente participa en comités de destacadas organizaciones como el Intercul-tural Senior Center dirigido por Carolina Padilla y el Mexican American Historical Society of the Midlands, fundado por Linda y José García.

“Creo que por más ocupado que uno esté en su trabajo, siempre se puede encontrar tiempo no sólo para estar con sus seres queridos sino también para apoyar como voluntario a la comunidad en diversas actividades”, enfatizó Pérez-Fuentes al tiempo que agregó que “es precisamente esto lo que me hace se-guir trabajando en First National Bank porque ésa es la misma filosofía de operaciones que tiene el banco, el participar activamente en la comunidad e igual-mente hacer sentir a cada empleado que es impor-tante para la empresa”.

First National Bank anualmente “tira la casa por la ventana” patrocinando la celebración hispana del 5 de Mayo convocada por South Omaha Business Association: “Y también ten-emos una presencia importante en programas

como el enfocado en ayudar a micronegocios his-panos en el Centro Juan Diego, donde parte de nuestro personal apoya con clases. Eso me recu-erda que la función de educar a nuestros clientes es algo principal para nosotros. Para mi no hay un cliente pequeño, y el banco me permite dar-les todo el tiempo que se merecen cuando tienen preguntas o necesitan mi orientación”.

A Pérez-Fuentes lo hemos visto caminando sobre la Calle 24, visitando a los empresarios his-panos para conocer sus inquietudes: “Me encanta llegar a trabajar diariamente a este hermoso edi-ficio histórico, donde además los clientes siem-pre te saludan al entrar y se despiden cuando salen, haciéndote sentir como en casa, en familia. Durante estos años he conocido a muchas parejas y ahora son sus hijos los que vienen conmigo a hacer sus transacciones. Y yo me siento muy bien cuando vienen a hacerme preguntas o a traerme un regalito, algo sencillo que significa mucho para mi y me recuerda aquellas películas viejitas en las que las personas le llevaban algún detallito al maestro para agradecerle que los había ayu-dado a ser mejores. Eso me recuerda mi vocación de servicio, que representa el ir más allá de mis obligaciones”.

BREVESPresidente Obama habla sobre la economía

Durante un reciente discurso semanal el presi-dente Obama puso enfasis en el acuerdo presupu-estario bipartidista recientemente aprobada por el Congreso y el estado actual de la economía de los Estados Unidos. “El presupuesto reducira algunos de los recortes perjudiciales que han amenazado a los estudiantes y a personas de la tercera edad y perjudicado nuestros negocios,” indicó Obama. Según el presidente el nuevo presupuesto “despeja el camino para las inversiones críticas en las cosas que crecen nuestra economía y fortalecen nuestra clase media, como la educación y la investigación.” Aunque el Congreso aprobó un presupuesto, Obama señaló que no abordaron el seguro de des-empleo para los que están actualmente sin empleo. El fracaso de aborar lo que es una línea de vida importante para muchos pondra a muchas familias a riesgo segun Obama. El Presidente también puso enfasis en su objetivo de hacer crecer la economía, ampliar las oportunidades y construir un Estados Unidos “que ofrece a todos los que trabajan duro la oportunidad para salir adelante.”

Informe reciente El Centro Hispano de Investigacion recientemente

publicó un informe que aborda la política de inmi-gración en los Estados Unidos. De acuerdo con el nuevo informe el 55 por ciento de los hispanos indicaron que las políticas que abordan el alivio de la deportación son más importantes que las políticas que abordan un camino hacia la ciudadanía para los inmigrantes. Sólo el 35 por ciento de los hispanos creen que las políticas que abordan un camino a la ciudadanía son más importantes para los inmigrantes indocumentados que residen en los Estados Unidos. A pesar de que el Senado de los Estados Unidos aprobó un proyecto de ley de inmigración bipartidista que aborda el sistema roto de inmigración en los Estados Unidos, la Cámara de Representantes ha puesto un paro a la legislación dado a la oposición republicana. Los inmigrantes indocumentados se verán obligados a esperar por legislación que aborde tanto las deporta-ciones y el tema de la ciudadanía.

President Obama on the EconomyDuring a recent weekly address President

Obama placed emphasis on the recent bipar-tisan budget agreement passed by Congress and the current state of the U.S economy. “The budget will unwind some of the damaging cuts that have threatened students and seniors and held back our business,” indicated Obama. According to the President the new budget “clears the path for critical investments in the things that grow our economy and strengthen our middle class, like education and research.” Although Congress passed a budget, Obama pointed out they failed to address unemploy-ment insurance for those that are currently unemployed. The failure to address what is an important lifeline for many families will put many families at risk according to Obama. The President also emphasized his focus to grow the economy, expand opportunity and build an America “that offers everyone who works hard the chance to get ahead.”

Recent ReportThe Pew Hispanic Research Center recently

released a report addressing immigration policy in the United States. According to the new report 55 percent of Hispanics indicated policies addressing relief from deportation are more important than policies address-ing a pathway to citizenship for immigrants. Only 35 percent of Hispanics believed policies addressing a pathway to citizenship were more important for undocumented immigrants residing in the U.S. Although the U.S Senate passed a bipartisan immigration bill that addresses the broken U.S immigration sys-tem, the House of Representatives is currently stalling legislation because of Republican opposition. Undocumented immigrants will be forced to wait for legislation that will address both deportations and citizenship.

Free ScreeningNebraska Appleseed, a local non-profit dedi-

cated to fighting for justice for all Nebraskans will be sponsoring a free screening of the film Inequality for All. The film addresses the inequality in the United States and the steps we can take as a nation to fix this problem. The first screening will take place on Monday, January 27 at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center in Lincoln. The second screening will take place at Aksarben Cinema in Omaha. “Something that will never change at all in my work is the opportunity to help fulfill the needs of our people. It isn’t only about open-

ing an account for them, selling them a product or about providing one of our services. It is about helping them develop their skills to where their potential can take them,” said Rigo Perez-Fuentes, Assistant Manager for First National Bank on 24th Street in South Omaha.

Perez-Fuentes started his career at First Na-tional Bank in 1999: “My first job was as a cashier, and with a lot of patience and hard work, I was able to get to where I am now.”

Born in the Mexican State of Chihuahua, Perez-Fuentes traveled to the United States for the first time during the 80s, when he visited one of his brothers in Delaware.

“After that I went back to work, and even though it was a nice place - explained Perez-Fuentes - I felt far from my family, so I moved to Texas trying to find a job at El Paso in order to be close to my parents.”

While he lived there, he thought about travel-ling to Omaha, collaborating with a company in charge of bringing people to work at said city: “I started at a packing company, then I worked at the Human Resources Department, and then I finally got in touch with other companies that were in charge of recruiting new staff, and I worked as a guide for the new workers that didn’t know Omaha.”

It has been 20 years since Perez-Fuentes start-ed to live in this country, and even though at first Nebraska was not very alluring to him “Here I felt free. It was like living in Mexico, with less stress, and life was cheaper than over on Dela-ware. I was also impressed by how many Latinos were home and business owners, something you didn’t see back in the day. My wife is also from Chihuahua, but I met her here, and it was here that we got married and started a family.”

Along with his work at the bank, Perez-Fuen-tes is also part of the committees at several orga-nizations such as the Intercultural Senior Center, with Carolina Padilla, and at the Mexican Ameri-can Historical Society of the Midlands, founded by Linda y Jose Garcia.

“I believe that no matter how busy one is at work, you can always find the time to be with your loved ones, and to help with volunteer work for the com-munity on several activities,” said Perez-Fuentes while adding “this is what makes me continue to work hard at First National Bank because it is the same philosophy at the bank, which actively par-ticipates in the community, feeling that every em-ployee is important for the company.”

Every year First National Bank “spares no expenses” when sponsoring the Cinco de Mayo celebration from the South Omaha Business As-sociation: “And we’re also part of other programs focused on helping Latino micro businesses at the Juan Diego Center, where our staff helps

with several classes and training courses. That reminds me about how educating every single one of our client is something we care about. For me, the is no such thing as a small client, and the bank allows me to give each and everyone as much time as they need when they have any questions or need my support.”

We have seen Perez-Fuentes walking down 24th Street, visiting Latino entrepreneurs to hear what they have to say: “I love coming to work every day to this historic building, were clients always say ‘hi’ as you arrive and say ‘goodbye’ as you leave, making you feel at home, like fam-ily. For all these years, I’ve gotten to know many couples as our clients, and now their sons and daughters are the ones coming to the bank as clients. I feel great when they come here and ask me all of their questions or when they bring me a small gift, something simple that means a lot to me, and it reminds me of old films where people would bring something for their teacher as a thank you for helping them become a bet-ter person. This reminds me of my vocation for service, which makes me go beyond what I’m re-quired to do.”
