PASTORAL COLUMN

Dear Brothers and Sisters, With the turn of the calendar, we now move into the last part of our rebuild and renewal. The buildings are ours and furniture has been placed in (most) of the rooms. That means that officially, we are open for business. It’s time for all of our ministries and formation groups to come home and fill these buildings with the life of our parish community. And so, we continue now with the policies and guidelines as we did prior to Hurricane Harvey. Keys are signed out in the office, we do not prop open the exterior doors with rocks and other objects leaving the building, compromising the safety of those inside. We also return the use of the Gonzaga Center and Sexton Hall to our children and youth ministries while adults move back across the campus. The exterior doors should be unlocked 20 minutes or so before the events begin and then should be locked 15 minutes after the event begins. If you know that some members will be arriving later than 15 minutes, the facilitator should make arrangements with the person. Procedures are in place for reserving the rooms, and hopefully, each ministry, organization and formation group will be back to where they were meeting before the storm. However, since the Christus Center no longer has classrooms, some groups will need to settle into new “homes.” Overall, as I’ve mentioned before, patience in a virtue and is needed in coming home. From the office stand point, the number of requests coming is like someone turned on a firehose! Literally, over a hundred requests came in one day alone. It’s exciting to know people are anxious to get back to the work of building the Kingdom. Logistically, it may take a while to settle back in. There are parts of the campus that are not yet finished. Please allow me to name these areas because it may have an effect on your ministry: Gonzaga Center: 4 classrooms are still being used as storage until all the pieces find their way home. The large conference room in the office area is also being used as storage and the new conference table hasn’t arrived. The Church: The furniture for the Holy Family Suite is still missing as is furniture for the Emmaus Room (formally known as the Groom’s Room). The Christus Center: The kitchen equipment hasn’t all arrived yet. The commercial vent hood is on order, as is the 10 burner gas stove with 2 ovens, the stacked electric convection oven, sinks and work tables. The ice machines are also missing in the kitchen and the beverage center. Pantry and storage area shelving is still missing as are the steam tables. We are also still waiting for the completion of the lighting system. The carpeting in the nurseries is also still missing. The Xavier Center: The kitchen in McGivney Hall hasn’t been completed. We are still waiting for the stove/oven, steam tables and additional work tables. The media package for the large conference room is missing. The undercounter refrigerator and coffee maker are needed for the coffee bar. T he Faber Center: The media package hasn’t been installed in the large meeting room. The RCIA inquiry room isn’t complete yet and the undercounter fridge and coffee make are still missing for the coffee bar. Overall, what is lacking are the kitchens. But, when they are finished, we will have two commercial kitchens available for parish ministry use. During the Open House I heard many times that our newly renovated campus was the silver lining of Hurricane Harvey. While I would agree, I would also add my prayers that we remain protected from future storms. Our Lady of Prompt Succor; pray for us! With my prayers for a complete renewal,

THIS WEEK’S READINGS THIS WEEK’S READING

Sunday, Aug 05, 2018 EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Free food Most of us learn early that there’s no free lunch. Even when manna falls from the sky, an expectation is attached to this heavenly hoarfrost. It’s the expectation that sharing this meal makes you a member of the community; that this community worships the one God; that such an identity involves a life shaped around common values. We eat this bread and drink this cup in perfect freedom. And yes, it’s free—for those who take divine life from heaven seriously. Ask yourself: Am I pre-pared to bring Christ-life into the world?

TODAY'S READINGS: Exodus 16:2-4, 12-15; Ephesians 4:17, 20-24; John 6:24-35 (113). “But Moses told them: ‘This is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat.’ ”

Monday, Aug 06, 2018 FEAST OF THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD Glimpses of glory Jesus takes the disciples Peter, James, and John up the moun-tain. There they see their Lord glorified before their amazed eyes. He speaks with Elijah and Moses, to show his connec-tion with the prophets and the law. It’s almost as if Jesus is offering his followers some positive reinforcement—“See, your belief in me is true.” Not surprisingly, Peter wants to “capture the moment” and remain in this place of assurance, but after they hear a voice from heaven, things return to “normal” and “they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with them.” As Christians we crave times when we feel what we believe is true. But we can’t live in these moments forever. Most of our journey won’t be on the mountain but on much more uncertain ground. But still we have Jesus, and we have one another.

TODAY'S READINGS: Deuteronomy 7:9-10, 13-14; 2 Peter 1:16-19; Mark 9:2-10 (614). “This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!”

Tuesday, Aug 07, 2018 MEMORIALS OF SIXTUS II, POPE, AND COMPAN-IONS, MARTYRS Enter into agreement When Sixtus II became pope in 257, he inherited a controver-sy so severe it threatened the unity of the church. During the pontificate of his predecessor, Saint Stephen, the churches of Africa and Asia Minor opposed Rome on the issue of whether those who formerly renounced the Christian faith during per-secution needed a new Baptism before being accepted back into the church. Rome said they did not. Rather, as Sixtus in-sisted, the grace of the original sacrament remained even with those who renounced Christ under threat of death. And while he could not persuade the Eastern churches that rebaptism was unnecessary, he was noted for restoring amicable rela-tions. Consider how you can repair communications with those with whom you have disagreements.

TODAY'S READINGS: Jeremiah 30:1-2, 12-15, 18-22; Matthew 14:22-36 or 15:1-2, 10-14 (408). “As many as touched it were healed.”

Wednesday, Aug 08, 2018 MEMORIAL OF DOMINIC, PRIEST Better living through books

The sheer glut of information in which we live tempts us to be satis-fied with sound bites, news highlights, even “spirituality lite.” How-ever, Dominic reminds us to go deeper. The study of the word of God is “itself an act of worship which sanctifies us,” and “today we need a knowledge of many things if we are to understand the Holy Scriptures properly and apply them to the concerns of our age” (Benedict Ashley, O.P.). A subscription to one of the many high-quality Catholic periodicals or joining a book discussion group might be just the right way to take up Dominic’s challenge. TODAY'S READINGS: Jeremiah 31:1-7; Matthew

15:21-28 (409). “She said, ‘Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.’ "

Thursday, Aug 09, 2018 MEMORIAL OF TERESA BENEDICTA OF THE CROSS, VIRGIN, MARTYR Great faith doesn’t happen overnight Many of us may be able to pinpoint clarifying moments when our faith comes to life and we are keenly aware of God’s presence, but underlying those moments are many hours of reading, discussing, pondering, and questioning. This is the process that Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) went through on her way to becoming a Catholic, a Carmelite, and a martyr among Jews and Christians in 1942. She credits her conversion with reading the auto-biography of Saint Teresa of Ávila, but it was her lifelong pursuit of knowledge—challenging her own and others’ beliefs—that primed her to read the book that would lead her to Christ. In honor of Saint Teresa, read a book that stretches your mind and heart today.

TODAY'S READINGS: Jeremiah 31:31-34; Matthew 16:13-23 (410). “You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do."

Friday, Aug 10, 2018 FEAST OF LAWRENCE, DEACON, MARTYR Laugh it up We don’t picture saints as having senses of humor. That is what makes the story of Lawrence being roasted over hot coals and telling his tormentors: “Turn me over. I am done on this side!” one of the most retold accounts of martyrdom. Who cares if it is just a legend? It remains a wonderful reminder that many saints laughed amid great hardship and that helped them reach sanctity. What has made you laugh a holy laugh lately?

TODAY'S READINGS: 2 Corinthians 9:6-10; John 12:24-26 (618). “God loves a cheerful giver.”

Saturday, Aug 11, 2018 MEMORIAL OF CLARE, VIRGIN The spirit of poverty Saint Clare (1193-1253) was only 18 when she first heard Saint Fran-cis of Assisi preach. His words set her on fire, and she soon ran away from home to bind herself to the Franciscan spirit of poverty and charity. Her family was outraged—even more so when Clare’s 15-year-old sister Agnes followed her to the convent several weeks later. In time, all was forgiven, and Clare’s mother, another sister, and an aunt eventually became Poor Clares, as the second order of St. Fran-cis became known. Clare’s tireless work to preserve the privilege of absolute poverty helped the Franciscan movement survive intact after the death of Francis. Pray for Clare’s youthful zeal in commit-ting yourself to Christ.

TODAY'S READINGS: Hebrews 1:12—2:4; Matthew 17:14-20 (412). “Amen, I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."

Second Annual Fall Choir Concert

The concert is Thursday, October 18, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. If you are interested in singing or playing in the orchestra, we may have a spot for you but don’t delay. Please contact Chris Bearer at [email protected]. If you aren’t able to join us in singing, mark your calendars to attend the concert!

Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Wednesday, August 15 is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a holy day of obligation. On this feast day of Our Lady we celebrate God's crowning of His work in the Blessed Mother as she ends her earthly life and enters eternity. The Assumption completes God's work in Mary since it was not fitting that the flesh that had given life to God himself should ever undergo corruption. This feast turns our eyes in that direction, where we will follow when our earthly life is over.

Mass will be celebrated in the main church at the following times:

Tuesday, August 14 - 7:00 p.m. Vigil Mass

Wednesday, August 15 – 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Mass, and 7:30 p.m. Misa en español

The Rosary will be prayed 30 minutes before each Mass.

NO 5:15 p.m. CONFESSIONS NO 6:45 p.m. Mass on Wednesday, August 15.

NO CONFESSIONS ON WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 8 and 15

There are NO regularly scheduled confessions on Wednesday, August 8 or on Wednesday, August 15.

Reflection from Pope Francis When we receive the Body and Blood of Christ, our reply of “Amen” implies a commitment. “You reply ‘Amen’ to the priest who distributes the Eucharist saying ‘the Body of Christ’; that is, you recognize the grace and the commitment involved in becoming the Body of Christ. Because when you receive the Eu-charist, you become the Body of Christ” (Mar. 21). This, says the Pope, is another place for silence. “After Communion, silence, silent prayer helps us treasure in our hearts the gift which we have received. To slightly extend that moment of silence, speaking to Jesus in

our hearts, helps us a great deal, as does singing a psalm or a hymn of praise (cf. GIRM,88) that can help us be with the Lord” (Mar. 21).

Handbell Choir

Our handbells were damaged during the flooding of Harvey but now they have been refurbished and sound great! We are rebuilding our bell choir in time for Christmas Masses. If you are interested in ringing please contact Chris Bearer, [email protected] for more information on how you can join.

Prayer for Hurricane Season

O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order and returned to its former quietude; you are still the

Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control. The Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming

lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land, and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season, we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved

Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem where a

storm-less eternity awaits us. Amen.

COLUMNA PASTORAL

Domingo, Aug 05, 2018 DÉCIMO OCTAVO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO Comida gratis
