CALL TO ACTION

The ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) program at Gainesville High School has students from all over the world. The parents of some of our students are studying at UF; others are working. Some are immigrants from third world countries. Some of our students are living with relatives. They have left their families in their countries and have come here to seek a better life.

For whatever reason, they come here with their suitcases and books and have to buy/rent/borrow everything else.

We are turning to you to help us make their lives a bit more comfortable. If you want to rid yourselves of some of the stuff you have collected throughout the years, think of us.

The ESOL Closet takes all kinds of donations, large and small, cheap and not. We have gotten and given to ESOL students, other GHS students, migrants and community members:- Couches and chairs- Bedroom sets and mirrors- Small stuff like picture frames, cosmetics- Tables, kitchen stuff, small appliances, dishes and silverware-Vacuum cleaners and microwaves- Clothes of all sizes and gender- Bedroom knickknacks for girls, cool stuff for boys- Gator and UF stuff (a real hit)- Anything else that is clean and in good working order (things you would not be embarrassed to give to your friends and family)

Call me at 352-955-6707, ext. 355. Call at home at 352-336-8915 anytime from now until you leave, including summer. Send an email to [email protected] and write “ESOL CLOSET DONATION” on the subject line. Whatever you can do will be appreciated by those who receive your donations. Leaving things by the dumpster or in your apartment when you leave is such a waste. Looking at it sitting in your apartment is a shame. Many students leave clean, usable items by the dumpster that are new or in perfect working order. Don’t be embarrassed to take them and call me.

Tell your families, your friends, your organizations about the ESOL Closet. Adopt us as your pet project. My students will surely appreciate it.

Many thanks, Louise Yariv

STUFF, STUFF ANDMORE STUFFAN OPEN LETTER TO THE HISPANIC COMMUNITY I WILL LISTEN

CAMPAIGNThis movement is sponsored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness or NAMI, and is entitled “I Will Listen.” The goal of the campaign is to break the stigma around mental illness by letting those who suffer know that we are here to listen to them when they need help. Almost 73 percent of students living with a mental health condition experienced a mental health crisis on campus. Yet 34.2 percent reported that their colleges did not know about their crisis. We want to help stop the silence. The campaign is centered around getting people to create videos pledging that they will listen to people dealing with mental illness and posting it to the website IWillListen.org.

What you can do?

- Come out to Turlington on 10/28 and 10/30, or the North Lawn on 10/29 and film an I Will Listen video with the AWARE Ambassadors

- Film a video of your own and post it to IWillListen.org
