ELA/ELD Curriculum Framework Timeline
CONFUSION...Moving away from….
Instruction in ELD that is separate from and isolated from instruction in ELA OR that is
indistinguishable from ELA
Moving towards…Dedicated instruction in ELD that builds into and from instruction in ELA and literacy in the
content areasWest Ed
Integrated ELDAll teachers with ELs in their
classrooms use the CA ELD
Standards in tandem with the
focal CA CCSS throughout
the day and across the
disciplines.
CA ELA/ELD Draft FrameworkTwo Types of ELD
Designated ELDA protected time during the
regular school day in which
teachers use the CA ELD
Standards as the focal
standards in ways that build
into and from content
instruction in order to
develop critical language ELs
need for content learning in
English
Guiding Questions• What are the major
characteristics of Designated ELD instruction?
• What are the major characteristics of
Designated ELD grouping?
What are the instructional implications of this
information?
Designated ELD Instruction• ELs require BOTH integrated and designated ELD
• Not separate or isolated from ELA and other content areas
• Encompasses: discourse practices, grammatical structures, vocabulary
• Strong emphasis on oral language development
• Not a time to teach or reteach content
• Requires deep collaboration between teachers
Designated ELD Grouping
• ELs should be grouped by language level only during the ELD block
• During the rest of the day ELS should be with heterogenous groups
• Schools have the choice to decide how it’s structured
• ELs must not be removed from core content (ELA, math, etc.) to receive designated ELD instruction
