school Matinee series

Welcome to the 2014/15 K-12 School Matinee Season at the EKU Center for the Arts. Whether you’ve been to a performance with your class or are looking for a new way to engage your students, live theater and music can involve, educate, and expand the horizons of your students in amazing ways!

We all know involvement in the arts is an indicator of success for our children. Researchers have found that sustained learning in music and theater correlates strongly with higher achievement in both math and reading, and brain research shows the arts also promote creativity, social development, personality adjustment, and self-worth.

Our School Matinee Season is designed to help regional K-12 teachers achieve their set goals in core educational standards... and to do so in a way that is both affordable and accessible for you and your class. This year you will find our matinee ticket prices have dropped to $6 per student/adult ticket with every 20th ticket still free.

Our October 20 performance with the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra is just $5 and also comes with an add-on component, an opportunity to maximize your day listening to a program of music about outer space with a visit to EKU’s renowned Hummel Planetarium!

Seating for this and all of our programs is limited. To ensure your class has seats, we encourage you to make your reservations early.

See you at the show!

Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school... again. And that’s the least of his troubles. Lately, mythological monsters and the gods of Mount Olympus seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy’s Greek mythology textbook and into his life. And worse, he’s angered a few of them. Zeus’s master lightning bolt has been stolen and Percy is the prime suspect.

Now Percy has ten days to find and return Zeus’s stolen property and bring peace to a warring Mount Olympus. But to succeed on his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the true thief: he must come to terms with the father who abandoned him; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of betrayal by a friend; and unravel a treachery more powerful than the gods themselves. Based on the popular book series by Rick Riordan.

Welcome to the EKU Center for the Arts! We hope you have a wonderful experience with us! We want to help you make the most of your day. A few notes about what to expect and some tips you can provide your group about theater etiquette:

WHEN YOU ARRIVE you will be greeted by a member of our usher staff as you enter the EKU Center. Ushers will coordinate with your group leader then lead your class to your seats in the theatre.

We recommend you arrive at least 30 minutes before the start of a performance, allowing enough time to be seated and for your students to make any necessary trips to the restroom. Latecomers disturb the patrons around them and will be seated during a suitable moment at management’s discretion.

No food or drink is permitted in the theatre at any time.

No cameras or recording devices of any kind are permitted, unless otherwise noted.

Students following their school’s clothes guidelines will feel comfortable at EKU Center events. Your field trip to the Center may, however, be a good opportunity to talk about dressing up for an event and to wear something that feels dressier.

DURING THE PERFORMANCE please refrain from talking or engaging in distracting or disrespectful behavior, so as not to detract from the enjoyment of others seated around you.

Please clap and laugh if you are enjoying the performance. Otherwise, do your best to remain quiet so the rest of the audience can enjoy the performance and the performers can do their best. Please show your respect and appreciation to the artists for their hard work.

Please try not to leave the theater during the performance. If you absolutely must leave, please try to wait for a suitable break in the program or try to leave as discreetly as possible.

Use your good judgment and don’t hesitate to ask an usher for help if you need assistance.
