1. Fastening w ithin a single structure
In his book Manuel d'Architecture Grécque, archaeologist
Roland Martín speaks of the types of fastening normally
used by Greek builders to achieve the perfect bonding of
a wal l. The use of fastening elements was usual, in spite
of the extremely precise fit of the faces of the ashlars, ob
tained by means of the anathyrose and the perfection o f
the isodomic bond.
·oovetail fastenings, with a wooden
cramp adapted to the cavity, are the most
elemental method, taken from systems of
joinery in wooden constructions and
adapted to soft stone construction. The
wooden piece is carved to size and jam ~
med into the cavity. In the case of hard
stone (limestone and marble). lead is used
for its flexibility and malleability as
sheathing for an iron or bronze cramp.
This technique led to the practice of pou·
ring lead into the cavity, which became
the general rule in later periods. "''
The Greeks were obviously unaware of the phenome
non o f galvan ic corrosion which takes place when
different metals are used together. The iron cramp - with
a potential of 0.440 Volts- starts corroding on contact
with lead -which has a potential of 0.126 Volts-. In the
long-run, it loses its resistant capacity.
The main function of this type of fastening was to
avoid the lateral displacement of the ashlars of each cour
se -that is, to absorb the torces of traction which may
occur. The dovetail and metal double-T forms embedded
in the stone respond perfectly to this requirement. To
achieve the vertical equilibrium of the walls, as well as of
columns, another type of fastening was requi red : the
dowel, or a form of fastening able to absorb the shearing
force which could be produced between ashlars in dif
ferent courses.
"The dowel system in vertical joints was not used by the Greeks
until recent times. In ancient times. the stones were simply piled
and stood by mere vertical pressure. Earth tremors and sliding
however, gave rise to the appearance of the technique of connec
tion by means of wooden, iron or bronze dowels in columns. The
first attempts at joini ng the courses of a wall started with sturdy
rectangular wooden pegs, placed in the least resistant parts of the
wall. Thus the ashlars at the corners were joined vertically one to
the other and the pegs covered i n a sheath of lead, which was
poured in through a channel which was completely filled. •'
Dry construction systems implied the use of cramps in arder to adequately bond the courses of a wall.

més elemental i provenen deis procediments d'encaix
pels grecs f ins a époques recents.
Reman constructors contributed little to the evolution
of fasteni ng elements. They used practically the same
techniques as the Greeks, though simplified: the double-T
fastener beca me a hook, this being an easier process.
The Reman mixed wall, made up of two outer surfaces,
often set squarely, and a thick fi lling of opus caemen t i
cium has, in the course of time, suffered a lack of bonding
between its layers. This sa lid wall, an early model of the
constructiva type used practically until the start o f this
century, undergoes differential deformation between the
nucleus and the outer surfaces, in spite of the precautions
taken by Reman constructors to make the wall monolithic
by placing long ashla rs into the nucleus. '
Various authors of construction t reatises and manuals
of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries expressed
their differing opinions on the suitabi lity of placing metal
fastening elements inside brickwork walls
A. Demanet warned of the poor resu lts in construction
given by the technique of placing headers to bond a wall:
"I n all cases in which the wall is made up of outer surfaces of
one type of masonry with a different nucleus, the disjunction be-
tween outer surface and nucleus is always dangerous in the long
term, due to the different deformations produced i n the two types
of masonry ... Occasionally, joints and anchors are substi tuted for
perpends, but this is less effective because, when settling takes
place, the perpends break, whereas iron anchors give without los-
ing their property of keeping outer surfaces and nucleus joined. •
G. Wanderley also put forward some solutions for
avoiding the separation of outer surfaces and nucleus.
" Headers do not ususally run right through the wall, but join the
lace w ith the rubblework inside; occasionally, the externa! ashlars
are connected to the headers with joints to strengthen the union.
When the base is raised, and no thick slabs are available, surface
slabs can be used for the cladding, fitted together with tongue and

compasa d'uns paraments d'obra
de ram de paleta amb un nucli d'un
altre t ipus, la desunió entre
paraments i nucli acaba sent sempre
perillosa degut a les d iferents
deformacions que es produeixen
en els dos tipus d'obra ( ... ).
units paraments i nucli."
La utilització de barres que travessen el massis de l'obr a adoptarien eventualment la forma d'armadures complexes (A. Demanet : Guide Pratique du Cons tructeur: Mafonnerie) The use of iron bars running through the body of the masonry takes on the form of complex reinforcement.
groove joints, and joined to the masonry with anchors." •
Conversely, J. Rondelet is against the use of metal fast
eners as a means of obtain ing the bond of facades.
"When ashlar walls are built, they should be laid out in such a
way that they tend to constitute a single mass, independently of
any other means of un ion, such as mortar, or metal cramps, despite
the fact that the ancients made great use of them. ·•
These references and the illustrations accompanying
them show that, until the end of the nineteenth centu ry,
fastening mthods had not varied substantially since its
l arge-scale use by the Greek builders. They were de
signed mainly to absorb traction, and their durability was
more than questionable. Not until the arrival of the struc
tural framework would a new phase start in the tech
nological evolution of this element of construction.
2. Fastening within a single structure and to an inde
pendent structure
When the use of metal structures in large buildings be
carne the norm at the end of the nineteenth century,
structural and enclosing functions were separated.
Fasteners, which until that moment were to keep the
facade wall together, were from now on also to keep it
joined to the structure, just behind it, with the aim of pre
venting destabilization by the action of the wind.
Turn-of-the-century constructions are extremely valua
ble examples for analysis, as the incipient metal structure
was joined to the wall of the facade, which rose from the
foundations and was still very thick due to the continuing
prevalence of old construction regulations; this meant
that structure and wall inevitably took the strain and were
deformed at the same time (the works of North-American
archi tects McKim, Mead & White are clear examples of
this type of construction). From he re on, fastening meth
ods had to lace up to the difficult challenge o f joining to
the structure unstable elements of the facade -mainly
the cornice, lintel and soffit. One classic author, E.G.
Warland, describes the construction of these elements:
• Attached lintels. The piece is connected
with the outer surfaces of the structure by
various devices. Anchor bolts and washers
are favoured by many. 01 course, anchorage
with hooks and machina bolts is preferable.
Frame construction brought about changes in the construction of cornices. as the prin
cipi e that the light wall should place a greater s·train on the cornice than its canti
levered projection beco mes no longer necessary. The cornices are from then on joined and supported by strong elements
of the framework.
96
fonaments i encara conserva un gran gruix per ser encara
vigents els antics reg laments constructius. A ixo produeix,
The bolt runs through the web of the lintel and the washer, screwed
onto the bolt, is lodged in a case made on the joining tace of the
stone piece. Once all the stones of the l intel are present, they are
joined by the outer surface and the lower lace, and cernen! is
poured down the back; when it hardens, it holds the anchor bolts
firm." '
The construction of a cornice is described in similar
terms (see illustration).
The technological leap experienced by fastening meth
ods in this period can be defined by the fo llowing char
acteristics:
A. Appearance of new types of fastener, spec ially de
signed to be effective in the new building system. The
facade elements are hung from the frame construction by
spec ia l fasteners which are more complex than simple
cramps.
B. Concern slowly began to be shown for the durabi lity
of the fastening, which was now being made of galvan
izad steel and other corrosion-resistant metals.
C. Positioning of fasteners was still complicated, ca lling
fo r a high degree of precision to make the apertu r es
made in the structure coincide with the grooves made in
the ashlars.
o. Fasten i ng did not as yet fo resee the f ree deform
ation of the structu re in relation to the facade.
lt is p recisely the least developed aspects of these fast
en ing elements (fa cil i ty of application, prediction of
behaviour, effectiveness in transferal of strain) w hich de
termine the conception of today's means of fastening.
3. Fastening within a single structure, to an indepen
dent structure and, in addition, hanging from it
The bearing collaboration between the structure and the
f acade is on ly possible when the latte r is made up of a
sufficiently thick wa ll and, at the same time, is capable of
bearing the strain created by the st ructure when deform
ation occurs. Building regulations have gradually made
the facade responsible only for th e requisitas proper t o
enclosures: thermal and sound insu lation, impermeability
to air and water, resistance to wind acti on , etc., w h ich
means that the facade today tends to be thinner and, at
the same time, more complex -that is, w i th a greater
number of specialized layers.
Fastening methods, more than ever, must jo in all t he
layers making up the facade; it must a lso join it t o t he
structure behind to stabilize it against wind and seismic
action; it must preven! any strain on the facade due to the
deformations undergone by the structure.
T he radica l path of the future, followed by many de
signers, has been to hang the facade from the structure,
thus s implifying the jo i n ing mech anism, allowi n g a

i penjar-se d 'ella
a'ill ament termic i acústic, impermeabi litat dava nt l'aire i l'aigua,
clearer technical design of means of subjection and im
plying the far more predictable behaviour of the whole.
We are faced w ith a new paradigm of subjection, char
acterized by the fact that it must comply with new , varied
req ui rements, both of a technical and economic nature:
"The system of fastening can be considerad
as an intermediary, flexible element between
structure and facade, and must comply with a
series of requirements according to the type of
facade:
A. Adjustment . The most importan! require
ment of fastenings is that they should able to
provide a small degree of adjustment lo the
facade in one direction or another. From the
visual and technical aspect, the success of the
faca de will depend mainly on the corree! pos-
itioning and alignment of its elements.
B. Resistance to corrosion. All fastenings
must keep their pr operties with no need for
maintenance; they must have a high degree of
resistance to corrosion. Metals such as stain-
less steel and phosphor bronze are accepted
as being superior quality, but are expensive;
galvanizad steel fasteners can be satisfactory if
carefully assembled, as everyth ing depends on
the continuity of the corrosion-resistant skin.
C. Strength. Fastenings must be strong
enough to bear the facade, not only alter con·
struction, but also throughout the assembly
operations.
D. Security. The fastenings must allow rela
tive movement between facade and structure,
but at the same time be ri gid enough to avoid the production of
vibrations.
E. Resistance to tire. The fastcnings must be made of a material
which does not rapidly lose its resistance in the event of fire.
F. Simplicity. Simplicity of the fastening design is not only to cut
production costs, but also to guarantee the fast , economic con
struction of the facade ... 1
Today's means of subjection comply to a greater or
lesser extent with the above requisit es, expounded by
M. Rostron, as well as with others which differ according
to each part icular construct ion. We can say that sub·
jection today has been indust rialized; today's means of

exigeix l'acompl iment de nous i var iats requisits, tant d' ordre
un element intermedi i f lexible ent re !'estructura
utilizada:
A. Ajust.
fa~ana rapida i económica."'.

ability, assembly, etc. They have been specialized and
perfected, seeking effectiveness in concrete appl ications,
as for example in different types of facade: curta in wa lls,
brickwork, light cladding, concrete panels, metal plates.
An immense range of anchors and plugs are today essen
tial complements for more complex subjections which
effectively transfer strain to the support -expansive
plugs, torced expansion plugs, chemical anchorage, etc.
The following examples of complex fastening aim to
illustrate the standard of appl ications achieved i n this
period: In the Pirelli Building by G. Ponti ; in the building
on Roosevelt lsland by J . L. Sert; in the Willis, Faber &
Dumas Building by N. Foster; and in the Musé National
des Sciences, la Tecn ique et !' Industrie by Fainsilber, Rice
and Francis, we can witness paradigmatic uses of these
technical achievements.
In just over one hundred years, we have moved from
the habitual use of the simple steel or bronze cramp to
join rubblework walls to the use of highly specialized
means of subjection which enable the connection of
different construction elements. Given that construction
is, fundamentally, the practice of joining elements and
resolving the joins between them by way of the techno
logical knowledge we have at our disposal , construction
today -which increasingly incorporales industrial
methods in the different phases of the building process
w ith the aim of achieving quality and technical and eco
nomic effectiveness- must use the techniques of fasten
ing provided by modern industry as the means of joining
its elements.

Sert, a l'edifici Willis, Faber & Dumas
l'objectiu d'aconsegu ir qualitat i eficacia tant tecn ica com

Subjection of a curta in wall allowing the absorption of
the structure's dimensional irregularities:
The means of subjection used by Gio Pon ti in the
Pirelli Building to fix the curta in wall to the structure
can be moved in all three dimensions. This facilitares
the assembly of the facade as wel l as its perfect
flatness in spite of the wide degree of dimensional
tolerance which concrete structures built in situ
generally have. The subjection of this building
comprises three parts:
- A steel plate embedded in the side of the floor/cei ling
structure, forming a channel for the horizontal
displacement of the fastener as a whole fparallel to the
edge of the floor/ceiling structure).
- An intermediare element. m a de up of two pieces
forming an L-shape which hold and put pressure on an
intermediare support to the element fixing the upright
of the curta in wall. This intermediare element, which is
lined with an elastic material to avoid the transmission
of vibration, and to allow the vertical and horizontal
displacement of the means of fastening (perpendicular
to the edge of the floor/ceiling structure).
-A support for the upright o f the curta in wall, resting
on the intermediare ridge and screwed to the lower
part of the upright.

Means of subjection which make it possible
to make the deformation produced in the brick
facade and a reinforced concrete structure
compatible:
The system of subjection used by J. L. Sert t o
fix the faca de to the concrete structure aims to
make the relative deformation of the two
subsystems compatible (thermal movements,
retractions, different deformations of the
structure), without endangering the stability
o f the facade:
The first l ayer of masonry is treated asan
absolutely independent !ayer, able to take
thermal deformation without transferring
tension to the other layers of the facade or the
structure. This is achieved by support on a
stainless steel profíle fixed to the floor/ceiling
structure on each !loor, with a system of wall
ti es on the inside layer or the concrete wall.
The inside layer is independent of the
floor/ceiling structure at their upper un ion, to
avoid tensions caused by the deformation of
the floor/ceiling structure. An open join is used
to this end. The stability o f the inside layer is
guaranteed by fasteners which are lodged on a
metal rail insertad in the floor/ceiling structure
and in the head joint between two blocks.

Means of fastening which make it
possíble to make the deformation
produced between a glass facade and a
reinforced concrete structure compatible:
The system of subjection in this building
is specially designed fo r the construction
of a facade of glass plate, totally
suspended from the structure, with rigid
buttresses, al so of glass, connected to the
concrete floor/ceiling structure: The glass
facade of the first three storeys comprises
six suspended glass modules, each of
which is flxed to the module above ít, the
highest beíng screwed to a bascule
suspension bar.
A series of tight ly-fillíng plates and
anchorplates hold the modules together.
The faca de ís made rigid to lace up to the
action of the w ind by means of glass
buttresses which joln the plates of the
facade to the concrete floor/ceiling
structure. A slidlng joínt facl lltates the
relative movement between facade and
structure. lntermediate sliding fasteners
preven! the appearance of vertical strain
externa! to the system. The bascule
suspension bar ensures that strain is well
distríbuted over the fastenlng pieces.

High-durability means of subjection which ensure
the absence of "parasite" strain in glass facades:
The means of subjection join ing the steel-cable
structure with the glass plates on the faca de of
this building, were designed to avoid the
appearance of unforeseen tensions ~particula r ly
flexion and torsion) in the glass plates:
The fastener. which acts like an articulation,
'chooses' the stress to be transferred, preventing
the appearance of moments of flexion in the
gl ass, w hich woul d considerably diminish it s
resistance. The mechanical behaviour required of
the fastening is in keeping with its design: The
articulated bolt is made up of a head which pivot s
freely on its rod, which fin ishes i n a sphere on
which the head is pressed by means of the ball
and-socket technique currently used in mechanics
and aeronautics. A threaded washer is screw ed
onto the head, fixing it against the g lass. Thi s
operation is eHected with the help of a pai r
of fi r mly-fitting bol ts, in such a way that the
mounting cannot produce unknown or
unforeseeable stress in the system.
The durabili ty of the fastener is another aspect t o
be taken into account, above all as regards the
risk of corrosion of the metals forming it and the
maintenance of a good contact between the glass
and the fastener.

intermedies termopl3stiques.
