Either vs. Neither (Either vs. Neither)

Podemos utilizar "either" y "neither" como pronombres, determinantes o adverbios. A

continuacin tienes una explicacin de las diferencias entre estas dos palabras.

Either

"Either" implica una eleccin entre dos posibles opciones. Ten en cuenta que la preposicin

"or" se utiliza entre estas dos opciones.

o Ejemplos:

We can go to eitherthe beach or the swimming pool. (Podemos ir a la playa o la piscina.)

Eitherwe wait for the rain to stop or we must change our plans. (Esperamos que pare de llover

o debemos cambiar nuestros planes.)

Neither

"Neither" indica el acuerdo entre dos ideas negativas. Con "neither", las dos ideas estn

separadas por la preposicin "nor".

Ejemplos:

NeitherHenry nor Chris want to go to the beach. (Ni Henry ni Chris quieren ir a la playa.)

Neitherthe school nor the parents want to take responsibility for the problem. (Ni la escuela ni

los padres quieren asumir la responsibilidad del problema.)

Grammatical Rules (Reglas gramaticales)

En funcin de pronombre

Cuando utilicemos "either" o "neither" como pronombre, se traducen como "o"/"ni" (ver los

ejemplos anteriores), "cualquier"/"ninguno" o como "tambin". En ingls, cuando se usan

como pronombres van seguidos por la preposicin "of" ms un sustantivo.

Ejemplos:

Neitherof the students studied very hard. (Ninguno de los estudiantes estudi muy duro.)

Eitherof my assistants can do it. Who do you prefer? (Cualquiera de mis ayudantes lo puede

hacer. A quin prefiere?)

En funcin de adverbio

Cuando se utilizan "either" y "neither" como adverbios, se pueden traducir como "tampoco" o

"tambin". As funcionan como conectores en frases negativas. Fjate en las diferencias

estructurales entre ambas.

Ejemplos:

Greg can't eat fish because he is allergic and neither can I. (Greg no puede comer pescado

porque es alrgico y yo tampoco puedo.)

Greg can't eat fish because he is allergic and I can't either. (Greg no puede comer pescado

porque es alrgico y yo no puedo tampoco.)

En funcin de determinante

Como determinantes, "either" y "neither" se encuentran directamente antes del sustantivo y

se pueden traducir como "cualquier" o "ninguno".

o Ejemplos:

I don't know, neithercolor really suits you. (No s, ningn color realmente te queda bien.)

Eitherjob could be interesting. (Cualquier trabajo podra ser interesante.)

Nota:Hay bastante confusin con el uso del singular y plural con estas palabras. Como regla, si

las dos partes estn en singular, utilizaremos el singular y si una de las dos est en plural,

utilizaremos el plural.

Ejemplos:

Eithermy sister or my brother is going to get their own bedroom, but I still have to share. (Mi

hermana o mi hermano va a conseguir su propio dormitorio, pero todava tienen quecompartir.)

Neitherthe dress nor the shoes are appropriate for the party. (Ni el vestido ni los zapatos son

apropiados para el partido.)

I am not tired, and neither are my friends. / my friends are not either.

No estoy cansado y mis amigos tampoco.

I can't play chess, and neither can you. / you can't either.

They won't attend the concert, and neither will I. / I won't either.

She has not seen that film yet, and neither has her boyfriend. / her boyfriend hasn't

They don't have money, and neither do we. / we don't either.

The English words eitherand neithercan cause some problems for native and non-native

speakers of English. Sometimes you can use either one and sometimes you have to

choose either one or the other, but neither one is very difficult.

Either Or

Either... oris used to offer a choice between two possibilities:

Either Mike or Lisa will be there.

Either you leave me alone or I will call the police.

We should bring either coffee or tea.

You can either help us or go to your room.

Eithercan also be followed by (one) of + group of two:

Either of us could do it

Either one of us could do it

Either of you should know

Either one of you should know

Not either ordenies both possibilities:

I dont think either Mike or Lisa will be there.

He doesnt speak either English or French.

Not eitheris used after a negative statement.

I dontspeak French.

Neither Nor

Neither noris equivalent to not either or.
