All the Boundaries of the Land:The Promised Land in Biblical Thought in Light of the Ancient Near EastNili WazanaWhat are the borders of the Promised Land in the Hebrew Bible? What drives and characterizes the descriptions given of them? The starting point for this research lies in the premise that, despite their detailed geographical nature, the biblical texts are not genuinely geographical documents. They are more appropriately to be understood and examined as literary texts composed in the service of an ideological agenda. In order to comprehend properly the idea of the Promised Land presented in the Hebrew Bible—its definitions, dimensions, and significance—we must understand that the descriptions belong to diverse literary genres, were composed according to various lit-erary devices that require decoding, and that reflect a range of perspectives, outlooks, and notions. All the Boundaries of the Land provides engaging fresh perspectives on the variant views of the Promised Land in the interface between literature, history, geography, and ideology. It does not intend to answer the question of how the borders of the land altered throughout the course of history. The reader will find no maps or outlines in this book. The emphasis is on the literary tools that were employed by the biblical au-thors who described the borders, and the ideological motives that guided them.Pp. xiv + 352. Cloth. 2013, in print. Of Courtiers and Kings: The Biblical Daniel Narratives and Ancient Story-CollectionsExplorations in Ancient Near Eastern Civilizations 1Tawny L. HolmHolm’s book is an innovative approach to the biblical Book of Daniel. It places Daniel against the background of story-collections, an ancient genre that began in Egypt in the mid-second millennium b.c.e. This work focuses on Daniel 1-6 and provides de-tailed comparisons with specific bodies of story-collections and other related material from the ancient Near East. In this regard, special attention is given to Egyptian court tales, a large corpus mostly neglected by previous biblical scholars. Thus, this book brings new evidence and fresh insights to the field of Daniel studies, which in recent years has generated constant interest, especially as it pertains to textual issues and literary matters. When Daniel is studied in the context of story-collections and kindred compositions from the Ancient Near Eastern and neighboring literatures, new light is shed on the lit-erary traditions and processes from which the Daniel stories arose. There are a greater number of court tales and cycles than previously recognized, as in the case of Qumran but also the Egypt Demotic corpus. The detailed discussion of all these materials al-lows us to appreciate the Book of Daniel in a much wider literary milieu and it furthers our understanding of the history of its composition and early transmission.Pp. xvi + 576. Literary Motifs and Patterns in the Hebrew Bible: Collected StudiesShemaryahu TalmonThis collection gathers together Shemaryahu Talmon's contributions to the literary study of the Bible and complements his acclaimed Literary Studies in the Hebrew Bible: Form and Content: Collected Studies (Jerusalem: Magnes / Leiden: Brill, 1993). The articles included herein span a broad range of topics, closely and com-prehensively assessing fundamental themes and stylistic conceits present in biblical literature. Each study picks up one of these motifs or patterns and traces its meaning and usage throughout the entire Bible. In Talmon’s estimation, these literary markers transcend all strata of the Bible, and despite diachronic developments, they retain their basic meanings and connotations throughout, even when employed by differ-ent authors over a span of hundreds of years. He employs this synchronic method throughout, frequently invoking an exegetical principle according to which one bibli-cal verse can be employed to interpret the other, if they are found in similar contexts and with overlapping formulation. To use an expression that he coined elsewhere, his hermeneutical method can be described first and foremost as “The World of the Bible from Within.”

The Yahwist: A Historian of Israelite OriginsJohn Van SetersThis book on the Yahwist comes at the end of a long career of research on the Penta-teuch in general and the Yahwist in particular. Van Seters's interest in the Yahwist was stimulated by the 1964 presidential address of the Society of Biblical Literature, given by Fredrick Winnett, “Rethinking the Foundations,” which focused on the Yahwist in Genesis. This interest followed a path of work on issues surrounding the Yahwist that culminated in three volumes, Prologue to History: The Yahwist as Historian in Gen-esis (1992), The Life of Moses: The Yahwist as Historian in Exodus–Numbers (1994), and A Law Book for the Diaspora: Revision in the Study of the Covenant Code (2003). In this book, Van Seters seeks to provide a summary sketch of the J history and to make clear how the Priestly corpus has been composed as a supplement to the Yah-wist with a radically different form and point of view that has obscured the Yahwist’s historical narrative and theological perspective. Part one lays out in simple terms the basic form, structure, and theological perspective of the Yahwist’s history, where it has been interrupted by the inclusions of P, and how it is integrated into DtrH. The essays in part two are intended to bring the scholarly discussion of Van Seters's ear-lier books on the Yahwist more up to date, and their order corresponds roughly to the order of the narrative in the first part of the book. Some of these articles have been published previously, but others are new and quite recent.

Lamaštu:An Edition of the Canonical Series of Lamaštu Incantations and Rituals and Related Texts from the Second and First Millennia b.c.e.Mesopotamian Civilizations 17 Walter FarberLamaštu was one of the most important Mesopotamian demons, playing a dominant role in the magico-religious and magico-medical beliefs and practices of ancient Mes-opotamia for nearly two millennia. Yet, she has never been the subject of a scholarly monograph dedicated to the textual and visual evidence for her, her activities, and the measures that ancient magical specialists took to counter her. This volume also falls short of this description, because it covers only one part of the material: it is an edition of the textual record only, which is, however, collected here as completely as seems possible today. Walter Farber, who has studied these materials for decades, presents a comprehensive collection of all of the known texts, the texts of the primary incanta-tions in a “score” format, and transliteration and translation of a number of ancillary texts. This much-awaited volume will fill the void in the literature on this aspect of the life and thought of ancient Mesopotamian peoples regarding the character of this malevolent creature and the means of warding off the threat that she posed.Pp. ca. 500; plates. Babylonian Creation MythsMesopotamian Civilizations 16W. G. LambertFor much of the last half of the twentieth century, W. G. Lambert devoted much of his research energy and effort to the study of Babylonian texts dealing with Mesopota-mian ideas regarding creation, including especially Enuma Elish. This volume distills a lifetime of learning by the world's foremost expert on these texts. Lambert provides a full transliteration and translation of the 7 known tablets of Enuma Elish, as well as coverage of a number of other texts that bear on Mesopotamian notions of the origin of the world, mankind, and the gods. New editions of seventeen additional “creation tales” are provided, including Enmesharra's Defeat, Enki and Ninmah, The Slaying of Labbu, and The Theogony of Dunnu.Lambert pays close attention to the connection of Enuma Elish with the rise and place of Marduk in the Babylonian pantheon. He traces the development of this deity's origin and rise to prominence and elaborates the relationship of this text, and the others dis-cussed, to the religious and political climate Babylonia. The volume includes 70 plates (primarily hand copies of the various exemplars of Enuma Elish) and extensive indexes.

The Lamentation over the Destruction of UrMesopotamian Civilizations 18Nili SametThe aim of this book is to present a revised edition of the Sumerian Lamentation over the Destruction of Ur, along with a new introduction to the literary genre of Sumerian City Laments in general and to the Ur Lament in particular.Lamentation is a well-known genre in world literature. Laments of various types are part of the cultural legacy and literary corpus of many societies, from ancient to modern times, and Sumerian literature is no exception. However, Meospotamian lamentation literature includes a significant body of laments belonging to a unique and almost unparalleled genre—the genre of lamentations over the destruction of cities and temples. This genre has no known ancient parallel outside the ancient Near East; more specifically, it is almost exclusively attested in Sumerian and biblical literature. In this updated and revised publication of the Lamentation over the Destruction of Ur, a text last treated systematically by P. Michalowski in “Mesopotamian Civlizations” in 1989, Samet provides a discussion of the Sumerian city-laments in general, a full presentation of the text of the Ur Lament, transliteration, translation, and commentary, as well as an accounting of the extant textual witness in “score” format. Plates and a CD with color photos of many texts are included.

Textbook of Aramaic Ostraca from Idumea, Volume 1Bezalel PortenSome 340 Aramaic ostraca of the Persian and Hellenistic periods have been excavated at 32 sites in Israel, from Yokneam in the north to Eilat in the south, with Arad and Beersheba being the main contributory sites. By far, however, the largest cache of texts is what has come to be known as “the Idumean ostraca.” These began to appear in 1991, not, however, as a result of sanctioned excavation. In the course of the past two decades, ca. 2,000 ostraca from this group are known to have reached institutions and private collections. Of these, the majority are still not formally published, and in this volume (and those to follow), Bezalel Porten undertakes to provide a comprehensive editio princeps of all the texts that are known and for which data is available. Porten, with the expert epigraphic assistance of Ada Yardeni and hand-copies by her as well, here provides the first volume of texts, organized by “dossier” based on the primary personage cited in the text. Color photographs (where available), hand-copies, trans-literation, translation, and commentary are provided for each text, along with intro-ductions and summaries of each dossier. This publication will become the primary resource for information on these texts.Cloth. Forthcoming, 2014. ISBN 9781575062778

Linguistic Studies in Phoenician:In Memory of J. Brian PeckhamRobert D. Holmstedt and Aaron Schade (eds.)This collection of studies dedicated to the memory of J. Brian Peckham is aimed at advancing our understanding of the grammatical and historical features of the Phoeni-cian language, a favorite topic that Professor Peckham rigorously studied and taught. The first set of studies concentrates on linguistic features of Phoenician qua Phoeni-cian. They include investigations of phonology and morphology, as well as linguistic approaches to syntax and text-level pragmatics. The second set of studies seeks to situate aspects of the Phoenician language typologically or within comparative, et-ymological, and historical Semitics. The result is a group of studies covering topics ranging from case endings, negation, pronominal usage, and phonology to dialectol-ogy, etymologies, and text linguistics. Given the use of Phoenician throughout the Mediterranean littoral, this volume contains something of interest for numerous areas of investigation, including comparative Semitics, Anatolian, early Mediterranean, and even Hebrew and biblical studies.Contributors include: Robert M. Kerr, Paul G. Mosca, Naʾama Pat-El, Philip C. Schmitz, Robert D. Holmstedt, Aaron Schade, Andrés Piquer Otero, Holger Gzella, Rebecca Hasselbach, and Dennis Pardee. Pp. xiv + 250. “Thus Speaks Ishtar of Arbela”:Prophecy in Israel, Assyria, and Egypt in the Neo-Assyrian PeriodRobert P. Gordon and Hans Barstad (eds.)Thus Speaks Ishtar is a collection of essays about prophets and prophecy in the ancient Near East during the Neo-Assyrian Period. This was the time when some of Israel’s greatest prophets emerged, and we also have from the same general period a number of prophetic texts found on the site of the ancient Assyrian city of Nineveh. The book examines the basic idea of prophecy and how this is shaped by the way we study the subject, and it then presents a number of fresh insights on a range of prophetic topics. These include the relationship between Israelite and other forms of prophecy in As-syria and Egypt and the relationship between what prophets said and the written forms in which their words were passed on. Other topics of contemporary interest include what these prophetic texts have to say about the environment, the place of intercession in Israelite and Assyrian religion, and whether the message of the trailblazing Israelite prophets of the eighth century was basically about judgment and community ruin or about hope and community well-being.Contributors include: Martti Nissinen, Robert P. Gordon, Jason Atkinson, Hans M. Barstad, Bob Becking, C. L. Crouch, Graham Hamborg, John W. Hilber, Hilary Mar-low, David J. Reimer, Joachim Schaper, Jonathan Stökl, Lena-Sofia Tiemeyer, and H. G. M. Interpreting Ecclesiastes:Readers Old and NewCritical Studies in the Hebrew Bible 3Katharine J. DellThis book gives a sample of what both ancient and contemporary readers have brought to the book of Ecclesiastes in the quest for illumination of the text and for their own enlightenment, often furnishing their own agenda. Debates over meaning are formed, shaped, and illuminated by the interpreters themselves. Part One looks at ancient interpreters and at their methods of approaching the text. Jewish and Christian interpreters alike sought to find meaning amongst some of the key puzzles of the book: why does the author call himself “the son of David” and appear to be Solomon when his pen name also seems to be Qoheleth? Why the contra-dictions in content? How did such an unorthodox book come to be canonized? Part Two acknowledges our increasing self-awareness of the importance of method in approaching biblical texts and turns to a sample of modern interpretations from familiar reading groups such as the ecologist, the animal theologian, the liberationist, the post-colonialist, and the feminist. It will be seen that different modern approaches often enlighten the interpretation of specific verses within Ecclesiastes and hence that no one method is a wholesale “solution” to interpretive concerns.

A More Perfect Torah:At the Intersection of Philology and Hermeneu-tics in Deuteronomy and the Temple ScrollCritical Studies in the Hebrew Bible 1Bernard M. LevinsonThe historical-critical method that characterizes academic biblical studies too often remains separate from approaches that stress the history of interpretation, which are employed more frequently in the area of Second Temple or Dead Sea Scrolls research. Inaugurating the new Eisenbrauns series, Critical Studies in the Hebrew Bible, A More Perfect Torah explores a series of test cases in which the two methods mutually re-inforce one another. The volume brings together two studies that investigate the rela-tionship between the composition history of the biblical text and its reception history at Qumran and in rabbinic literature. Levinson shows the significance of syntax and historical linguistics for understanding how ancient scribes established claims of religious and textual authority. Appendixes on the use of conditionals in biblical law and the Dead Sea Scrolls provide resources for further research.

Cursed Are You!The Phenomenology of Cursing in Cuneiform and Hebrew TextsAnne Marie KitzThis is a book about curses, that is, petitions to the divine world to render judgment and execute harm on identified, hostile forces. In the ancient world, curses functioned in a way markedly different from our own, and it is into the world of the ancient Near East that we must go in order to appreciate the scope of their influence. For the ancient Near Easterners, curses had authentic meaning. Curses were part of their life and religion. They were not inherently magic or features of superstitions, nor were they mere curiosities. They were real and effec-tive. They were employed proactively and reactively to manage life’s vicissitudes and maintain social harmony. They were principally protective, but they were also the cause of misfortune, illness, depression, and anything else that undermined a comfort-able, well-balanced life. They crossed cultural lines and required little or no explana-tion, for curses were the source of great evil. Curses were everywhere.Because curses were woven into the very fabric of every known ancient Near Eastern society, they emerge frequently and in a wide variety of venues. They appear on public and private display objects, on tomb stelae, tomb lintels, and sarcophagi, on ancient kudurrus and narûs. They are used in political, administrative, social, religious, and familial contexts. They are the subject of incantations. They are tools that exorcise demons and dispel disease; they ban, protect, and heal.Pp. xii + 480. Cloth. Forthcoming, December 2013. ISBN 9781575062716

The Private Lives of Women in Persian EgyptAnnalisa AzzoniThe Elephantine texts have been variously studied, mainly with respect to their impact on Jewish history. But these texts have more to offer, particularly in relation to the history of women. Annalisa Azzoni, in The Private Lives of Women in Persian Egypt, delves deeply into these texts, examining these Egyptian Aramaic documents in order to make public the lives of women, including their social status, their economic activ-ities, and their private lives. Azzoni recovers the lives of everyday women, allowing them to take their place in the larger context of women in the ancient Near East.Challenging any oversimplification about the lives of ancient women, Azzoni pains-takingly examines legal documents, administrative texts, and letters. The archives provide a wealth of data in terms of legal and economic status as well as position in the community. Three women receive particular attention in this study: the wealthy Judean Mipṭaḥiah, the Egyptian slave Tamut, and Yehoyišmaʿ, Tamut’s manumitted daughter.

Creation and Chaos:A Reconsideration of Hermann Gunkel's Chaoskampf HypothesisJoAnn Scurlock and Richard H. Beal (eds.)Hermann Gunkel was a scholar in the generation of the origins of Assyriology, the spectacular discovery by George Smith of fragments of the ‘Chaldean Genesis,’ and the Babel-Bibel debate. Gunkel's thesis, inspired by materials supplied to him by the Assyriologist Heinrich Zimmern, was to take the Chaoskampf motif of Revelation as an event that would not only occur at the end of the world but had already happened at the beginning, before Creation. In other words, in this theory, one imagines God in Genesis 1 as first having battled Rahab, Leviathan, and Yam (the forces of Chaos) in a grand battle, and only then beginning to create.A century has passed since Gunkel introduced his hypothesis, but it remains a provoc-ative topic among scholars of the Bible and the ancient Near East. Creation and Chaos provides several new essays addressing some of the issues raised by Gunkel. Con-tributors include: Karen Sonik, Dennis R. M. Campbell, W. G. From the Depths of Despair to the Promise of Presence:A Rhetorical Reading of the Book of JoelSiphrut: Literature and Theology of the Hebrew Scriptures 11

Barker, J.

Joel BarkerThe book of Joel begins with a depiction of a locust plague and drought, followed by the terror-inducing threat of Yhwh marching against Zion at the head of an invading army. This prompts a prophetic call to return that eventually leads to restoration, guaranteed by the presence of Yhwh in Zion. From the Depths of Despair to the Promise of Presence approaches Joel through the prism of rhetorical criticism, a discipline that delves into the heart of the text and considers its persuasive intent and effect. It provides a window into the language of prophecy and its struggle to present the reality of Yhwh through the limitation of human speech and thought. It also prompts the interpreter to con-sider the effects of the book’s literary artistry and to explore the ways in which it persuades an audience to adopt its point of view and respond appropriately.

Melchizedek’s Alternative Priestly Order:A Compositional Analysis of Genesis 14:18–20 and Its Echoes Throughout the TanakBBRSup 8Joshua G. MathewsGen 14:18–20 is a brief episode depicting the encounter between Abram and Melchize-dek. Taking this episode and its context in the Pentateuch as the starting point, Mathews sets out to analyze the text as it has been composed, in order to understand the biblical and theological significance of this priest-king Melchizedek. The thesis proposed and investigated is that Melchizedek’s royal priestly portrayal in Genesis initiates a priest-hood that is intentionally presented as an alternative to Aaron and his priesthood. The claim is that this distinct priestly order is evident in the biblical text as we have it, and it may be discerned by reading the text carefully, on its own terms, with close attention to its compositional features.

Toward an Interpretation of the Book of Proverbs:Selfishness and Secularity ReconsideredJTISup 7Zoltán S. SchwábMajor religious themes of the Bible, such as election and covenant, are not mentioned in the book of Proverbs. Furthermore, self-interest underlies its motivational system (“you shall behave well, because it will be good for you”). These “selfish” and “secu-lar” features have posed serious ethical and theological challenges for some interpre-ters, while others have claimed that their presence is only in the eyes of the beholder. Zoltán Schwáb argues that its self-interested and secular nature should not be simply affirmed or dismissed.

Reading the Way to Heaven:A Wesleyan Theological Hermeneutic of ScriptureJTISup 8Steven Joe Koskie Jr.This monograph develops a Wesleyan theological hermeneutic of Scripture, ap-proached as a craft learned from a tradition-constituted appropriation of John Wes-ley’s hermeneutics. This hermeneutic requires a descriptive analysis of the context, grammar, and ruled reading of the literal sense in Wesley’s interpretive practices, as well as critical interaction with the analysis in light of contemporary issues. As a re-sult of this interaction, continuity and discontinuity between Wesley’s and Wesleyan interpretation emerges and is accounted for.Pp. ca. xii + 220. Paper. Forthcoming, December 2013. A Canonical Exegesis of Psalm 8:Yhwh's Maintenance of the Created Order through Divine Reversal JTISup 9Hubert James KeenerIn this study, Keener does two things: (1) he demonstrates that a canonical exegesis of the variety introduced by Childs is tenable if the task is approached with clarity regarding the core theological foundation of the method; and (2) he uses the approach in a test case, the interpretation of the often thorny questions surrounding the under-standing of Psalm 8. He reveals two intersecting trajectories of thought in the passage, which are then intersected by a third trajectory, that of the redeeming Christ, when read in concert with the New Testament. Esther, Queen of the Jews: The Status and Position of Esther in the Old TestamentConiectanea Biblica Old Testament Series 59Tal DavidovichEsther was, is, and always will be regarded as the Queen of Persia, an idea based, perhaps, on the need for security and comfort for diaspora Jews, who passed this story on to their children through the generations to give them hope even in their darkest hours. Esther’s status in Jewish thought as a Persian queen is based on the contents of the different versions of the Book of Esther and also on the Persian sociohistorical background of the events described in the book. This study includes an introduction, an examination of Esther’s character in the Book of Esther, in comparison to other royal women in the OT, and in light of the Resh Ga-luta, and conclusions. The study follows the evolution of Esther’s status inside and outside the royal palace and her power in comparison to other similarly placed women. Whether she was a member of the pilagshim or carried the title of Queen (of the Jews?) is a question of secondary importance. Of more importance is that Esther was indeed Resh Galuta, the one woman in Jewish history who is known to have been the Head of the Diaspora, the formal leader of all the Jews in exile.

Personennamen und Religion im alten Israel:untersucht mit besonderer Beruecksichtigung der Namen auf El und BaʿalConiectanea Biblica Old Testament Series 60Stig NorinThe goal of this study is, with the help of personal names bearing El and Baʿal theoph-orics, to describe ancient Israelite religion from its origin, through the monarchic pe-riod to the Persian period. The investigation also deals with the relationship between the pre-Israelite god El and the god of Israel known by the names Elohim and Yhwh (Yahweh), as well as with the relationship between the veneration of the gods of Israel and the so-called Baʿal cult. Moreover, it provides a contribution to the understanding of the origin of the Old Testament and the connection between the various books of the Bible with their various names for the god of Israel.

Gezer VII:The Middle Bronze and Later Fortifications in Fields II, IV, and VIIIJoe D. SegerIn 1912, R. A. S. Macalister published reports on his PEF excavations at Tell Gezer in central Israel, including notice of having traced more than 1,400 meters (almost a full mile) of defense walls around the site. Now, a century later, a detailed reassessment of these fortifications is provided here. This volume features work at Gezer sponsored by Hebrew Union College and Harvard University between 1968 and 1974, reporting on excavations at Macalister’s “Southern Gate” (Field IV) and along his “Inner” and “Outer” wall systems both on the southern (Field II) and northern (Field VIII) flanks of the site. These excavations produced much new data, enabling a confident dating of the Southern Gate complex and the Inner Wall system to the latter part of the Middle Bronze period (1700–1500 b.c.e.) and of the Outer Wall to the Late Bronze II and subsequent Hellenistic eras. Among a rich array of cultural remains, intramural occu-pation of the Middle Bronze Age yielded a gold jewelry hoard and early evidence of alphabetic writing.

Lahav III: The Iron Age II Cemetery at Tell Halif (Site 72)Lahav: Reports of the Lahav Research Project / Excavations at Tell Halif, Israel 3Oded BorowskiIn 1965, excavation work for a new swimming pool at Kibbutz Lahav uncovered the first in a series of tombs from an Iron Age cemetery on the hillside south of Tell Halif. In 1972, as bulldozers worked to widen the road along the hill's lower flanks, three additional burial caves were exposed, and in the years that followed, various explo-rations identified still more tomb sites along the ascending slopes. With the initiation of the Lahav Research Project's excavation and survey work at Tell Halif in 1976, the cemetery area was designated as Site 72, and in 1977, in company with a LRP summer campaign at the site, another three tombs were excavated. Now, based on further re-connaisance and reinvestigations at the cemetery by Oded Borowski in 1988, Lahav III provides a comprehensive study of the Site 72 cemetery remains.

Sepphoris I:The Pottery from Ancient SepphorisSepphoris Excavation Reports 1Eric M. Meyers and Carol Meyers (eds.)Sepphoris, “the ornament of all Galilee” according to Josephus, was an important Gal-ilean site during the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods and into early Islamic times. It served as Herod Antipas’s capital of Galilee in the late first century b.c.e. and the early first century c.e., and the Sanhedrin (the supreme Jewish judicial authority) was located there for a time in the third century C.E. Extensive excavations on the western acropolis—probably the location of many of the Jewish occupants of this multicultural city—by the Duke University-Hebrew University project in the mid- to late 1980s and the Duke excavations of the 1990s produced a remarkable assemblage of ceramic wares. This book provides an overview of the history and chronology of the site. It then presents a detailed examination of the pottery. Featuring 55 plates with line drawings as well as some photos of the various ceramic types, this important publication will be essential for all studies of the archaeology of early Judaism and Christianity in the Holy Land.

This is the first full critical edition of all currently known astrolabe texts and a ground-breaking study of their astronomical content, showing that the text as it has come down to us consists of three redactional layers dating from different time periods, the earliest of which is to be dated to prehistoric times (ca. 5000 BCE).

Ephraim SternThis monograph is the product of Stern's two decades of ex-cavation at Tel Dor on the Carmel Coast, a city that Egyptian sources indicate was ruled in the eleventh century bce by a Sikil king. Near the end of the period during which he directed excavations there, Stern began to notice the unique material culture of the Northern Sea Peoples and connected this mate-rial with discoveries in adjacent regions and in the north of Is-rael. In this volume Stern presents the most complete picture that can be drawn from the evidence uncovered in the past few decades. Lavish illustrations accompany the discussion.

Eva Andrea Braun-HolzingerThe starting point of this study are deities of the late Early Dynastic period which can easily be recognized as such be-cause of their horned crown. The author critically evaluates whether banquet and combat scenes should be understood in terms of “mythology,” concluding that mythological and cultic scenes involving deities are absent at least from the minor arts preceding the late ED period. Only then is the re-lationship between deities and humans, long determined by ritual, translated into images.

Gottes Zorn in den PsalmenOrbis Biblicus et Orientalis 244

Stefan H. WälchliWälchli examines the notion of God’s anger. He proposes to understand God’s wrath as an aspect of His justice. Viewed in this way, anger does not contradict God’s love and grace, but His pity. As such, it may be understood as an aspect of hope, insofar that it allows to incomprehensible suffering in relation to God as a just judge – a view which allowed OT au-thors to interpret suffering, especially the suffering of Israel during the exile.

Oaths and Curses: A Study in Neo- and Late Babylonian Legal FormularyAlter Orient und Altes Testament 398Malgorzata SandowiczIn most ancient societies divine agency plays an important role in legal procedures. Its advantage is that it can be appealed to where the human factor fails or proves insuffi-cient. In Mesopotamian legal procedures divine agency was invoked in a number of ways, the most common of which were oaths, curses, blessings, ordeals and summon-ing of gods as document witnesses. The present study examines the first two of these means as they appear in clauses of legal documents of the first millennium BC Babylo-nia. It reconstructs the way in which Neo-and Late-Babylonian oaths and curses were formulated and examines the component elements of formulae and the ways they were put together. It also establishes the reasons behind the choice of formulae and deter-mines the extent to which this choice depended on the people involved, the objects and subjects dealt with and the circumstances of time and place. The discursive part is followed by transcriptions and translations of and philological comments on the oaths and curses. The study is supplemented by extensive, especially prosopographic indices.

Daniel 10–12 als Schlussel zum BuchForschungen zum Alten Testament 2. 258

From the 18th century on, reading Daniel 10–12 as a historical source was seen alongside a fundamentalist understanding of the text. More recent studies of Anti-ochus IV reveal problems of a historical interpretation of the Daniel text. Using a literary approach, Wildgru-ber shows that the final vision can be seen as a histor-ical interpretation in the context of biblical theology.

Jonathan Huddleston

In this study, Jonathan Huddleston examines Genesis as a rhetorical whole, addressing Persian-era Judean expectations. While some have contrasted Genesis? ac-count of origins with prophetic accounts of the future, literary and historical evidence suggests that Genesis narrates Israel’s origins precisely in order to ground Judea’s hopes for an eschatological restoration.
