Einstein Healthcare Network Trials the MEDRAD Next-Gen CT Injection System Making the Switch to MEDRAD® Stellant FLEX Supports clinical and operational improvements
Key Takeaways Einstein Healthcare Network is a multi-site imaging
provider with facilities in and around Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania. As part of a controlled commercial release
(CCR), Einstein was one of the first radiology groups to
test out the MEDRAD® Stellant FLEX CT Injection System,
an upgrade from their existing MEDRAD® Stellant CT
Injector System. Upgrading the aging injector proved to be
a seamless transition for the Einstein technologist team
with many added operational benefits due to a number of
key features:
• Reduced syringe cost
• Improved syringe loading
• Accurate documentation associated with multiple-
accession-number exams and configurable workflow
Meeting the Needs of High Volume Emergency Department CT ScanningAs a long-time Bayer customer, Einstein Healthcare
Network had come to rely on the efficiencies, reliability
and consistent injection system performance provided
by MEDRAD® Stellant CT Injection Systems. Meeting
the demands of their increased Emergency Department
CT procedure volume made upgrading their injection
system especially attractive. In making the switch, it was
important to Einstein that the new MEDRAD® Stellant
FLEX CT Injection System satisfy the needs of their
technologist staff while also offering an easy transition
with quantified clinical and operational improvements.
Built-In Technologist SatisfactionEinstein reports that technologists were very pleased
with the addition of the MEDRAD® Stellant FLEX CT
Injection System. “From every measure that I can see,
the technologists are very happy with MEDRAD® Stellant
FLEX,” says Dr. Ryan Lee, MD, MBA, MRMD, Section Head
of Neuroradiology and Vice Chair of Quality and Safety
for Einstein Health
Network. “The
technologists are the
users of the injection
system. If they’re
happy with it, I believe
it results in improved
workflow.”
Rose Hall, RT(R)
CT, Supervisor CT
Scan, noted that the
improved contrast
auto-load feature
results in a cleaner
loading process.
She added that this
improved design
combined with the
new seamless injector
head overlay reduces
service issues related
to contrast drips.
“From every measure that I can
see, the technologists are very
happy with MEDRAD® Stellant
FLEX,” says Dr. Ryan Lee, MD,
MBA, MRMD, Section Head
of Neuroradiology and Vice
Chair of Quality and Safety for
Einstein Health Network. “The

Experiencing the Value of Syringe SavingsThe CCR gave Hall the chance to
experience first hand the savings
associated with smaller syringes
available with the MEDRAD® Stellant
Flex CT Injection System. Einstein
intends to take advantage of the 150
mL syringe option now offered in
addition to the 200 mL syringe size for
protocols that require higher volumes
of contrast.
Supporting Improved Quality OversightLike many other healthcare
organizations, Einstein understands
the value of ensuring accurate and
complete patient electronic medical
records. With this in mind, they needed
the upgrade to do more than just
work great -- they needed it to enable
comprehensive oversight.
“It’s easy with MEDRAD® Stellant FLEX to
make sure that all of the technologists
are doing the right thing,” says Hall.
She explained that the most recent
Contrast Dose Management software
enhancement available on MEDRAD
injection systems allows the user to
easily tie together at the point of care
contrast injection details for exams
with multiple accession numbers. She
experienced that support of multiple
accession numbers reduces post
procedure workflow for the technologist
and improves complete visibility and
accuracy of contrast documentation for
the radiologist -- regardless of reading
room location.
The introduction of configurable
workflow has also added to the
completeness of contrast injection
details at Einstein. This recent software
enhancement enables Einstein to
enforce specific data field capture
at the point of care.” Hall noted,
“Enforced workflow through the use
of configurable mandatory fields has
helped me to ensure injection data
is complete in the radiologist report
templates and when I review injection
data for QI projects and trouble
shooting.”
Favorably Impacting the Goals of RadiologistsFocusing in on radiologist priorities,
Lee noted the value of the piston-
driven, flow-controlled technology
that the family of MEDRAD® Stellant
CT Injection Systems offers. He spoke
to the role this technology plays
in enabling reproducible contrast
delivery with consistent flow rates for
reproducible diagnostic image quality
when performing today’s advanced CT
procedures.
Having integrated Speech Reporting
into the radiologist workflow at
Einstein, he also reinforced the
importance of enabling contrast
brand, concentration and volume to
be auto-populated directly into the
patient’s diagnostic imaging report.
“Speech Reporting automation is
more than a convenience. It greatly
improves our workflow and the
accuracy of contrast documentation,”
says Lee.
A Seamless TransitionEinstein experienced no learning
curve in upgrading from the MEDRAD
Stellant to MEDRAD Stellant FLEX
injection system. Specifically,
Hall noted that she appreciates
how MEDRAD Stellant FLEX offers
improvements without requiring major
changes in technologist workflows.
“If you want to progress and do better
for your patients and your workflow,
updating your injection system is key,”
Hall says. “I can’t see why anyone
would choose not to use MEDRAD
Stellant FLEX.”

“I honestly believe we’re going
to be saving money with the 150
mL syringes,” Hall explained.
“It might not be a large savings
initially but I believe sites doing
a lot of injections will see savings
much quicker than you would
think. Plus the option to use
a smaller syringe is better for
both the technologists and our
patients.”
