We so often assume that children cannot understand God’s love, so we feed them paltry crumbs of truth, which cannot meet their hunger for the infinite expanse of God. Instead, we should strive to give them food that is both digestible and nourishing. Children are concrete thinkers. Family life must prepare children for the Eucharist in concrete ways. Christ in the Eucharist loves us by offering himself to the Father. Eucharistic love is sacrificial love. “In this divine sacrifice which is celebrated in the Mass, the same Christ who offered himself once in a bloody manner on the altar of the cross is contained and is offered in an unbloody manner” We too can offer ourselves in an unbloody way, by lifting up the daily events of our lives as a sacrifice of praise to the Father. If we parents keep in mind that our children need our homes to be schools of patience, of stillness, of silence (the essential conditions for a vital interior life), then certain practical steps come immediately to mind. If busyness consumes us as adults, the frenetic pace of the world will invade our children’s spirits. The peace of Christ should be palpable in our homes. This requires that our own prayer lives be vigorous and constant and that we pray together as families. Grace before meals is crucial (as is eating dinner together). The Church encourages laity to exercise their common priesthood by praying the Liturgy of the Hours. Night Prayer serves well as a structure for bedtime prayer. Praying the Rosary together suffuses the graceful presence of our Holy Mother Mary. If possible, going together to Eucharistic adoration once in a while; this will make a decisive difference in the spirit of the home. It is also worth prayerfully considering placing significant limits on the amount of television our children watch. Constant noise and trivia destroy the taste for prayer, our ability to see everyday life as something to be offered up to God, and our recognition of the deepest hunger in us for God’s true love. Our children naturally aspire to infinite knowledge and love. Filling our homes with statues (the more beautiful the better), reproductions of great art (religious and otherwise), great books, classical music, crucifixes, and bedtime prayer will have a profound impact on children. When we as parents pray for the wisdom of the Holy Spirit, we are given inspiration to undertake the practical steps necessary to transform our homes into schools of love. Truer than Marlowe’s Faustus, we can say, “See, see, where Christ’s blood streams in the firmament.” Indeed, see, see the unstoppable torrent of Christ’s love flowing through the fabrics of everyday life, flowing from his pierced Heart on the Cross (Jn 19:34), when we intentionally arrange the life of our homes according to Christ’s Eucharistic offering.

That Christ Should Enter Under Our Roof

How do we raise our children so that they are made ready to respond to th is e ternal , Eucharistic love? If we parents keep in mind that

our children need our homes to be schools of patience, of stillness, of silence (the essential conditions for a vital interior life), then certain practical steps come immediately to mind.

Reflection: "The greatest reward the Lord can give us in this world for our work is to let us serve Him with all our heart...all for His glory." ~ St. Magdalene of Canossa

ADULT FAITH FORMATION

► SUNDAY SCRIPTURE READING REFLECTION GROUP: Led by Alberta Urrea, meets every Thursday morning in St. Francis Hall at 9:30 AM. The reflection is on the Sunday Liturgy readings for the following Sunday. Just show up with your Bible and the Living Faith Booklet.

► LITTLE ROCK SCRIPTURE STUDY GROUP (LRSS): The topic for the Fall session is the Gospel of St. Luke. Morning sessions will be on Wednesdays, September 21—October 26, at 9:30-11:30 AM, in St. Francis Hall. The facilitator is Rose Fernandez. Evening sessions will be on Tuesdays, September 27—November 1, at 7:00-9:00 PM. The facilitator is Sr. Cristina. Registration fee is $12.00, for the booklet and study guide. Please call 299-9111 to register. Thank you.

► Pope Benedict XVI’s Encyclical Caritas in Veritate: Wednesday, August 3, 6:30-8:30pm at Our Lady of Fatima in Albuquerque—This is the last interactive workshop offered this summer on Pope Benedict’s Encyclical Caritas in Veritate. “The Christian faith does not rely on priviledge or position of power, nor even on the merits of Christians...but only on Christ, to whom every authentic vocation to integral human development must be directed.” Br. Graham Golden, O. Praem, from Office of Social Justice and Respect Life Archdiocese of Santa Fe will facilitate the discussion. For more information call 505-831-8235 or email [email protected].

JUST FAITH: Scripture repeatedly calls us to care for the widows, the orphans and the strangers. Who are these people in our world today? What do I know about them? What does my faith say about my relationship with them? The JustFaith program is an intensive thirty-week program that helps to answer these questions through reflection on Scripture and Catholic social teaching, study, prayer and community. Groups are forming to start this Fall. For more information, call the Office of Social Justice and Respect Life, 505-831-8167 or email [email protected].

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Our Lady of the Annunciation Roman Catholic Parish is a people of living faith rooted in the Gospel, centered on

the Eucharist and led by the Holy Spirit. We are inspired by the example of Mary to continue the mission of Jesus Christ by ministering to all.

Annunciation Parish Website: www.annunciationparishabq.org

CANOSSIAN GOLDEN JUBILEE Our faithful have been blessed with an outpouring of grace and love since the arrival of the Canossian Sisters 50 years ago. Together we have grown side by side in the service of God’s holy people. The sainted foundress, Magdalene of Canossa rightly set the course by acclaiming that Jesus is not loved because He is not known and set about the glorious task of “Making Jesus Known and Loved.” Today we commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the arrival of a spirituality designed to raise the faithful to new levels of love for the Lord. Please join us for a special Jubilee Mass today, Sunday, July 31st at 12:00 p.m. here at Annunciation Parish followed by a reception in the parish gym. If you would like more information on the Sisters’

ministries and how you can join them in “Making Jesus Known…” please visit us at www.canossiansisters.org or contact the Canossian Spirituality Center at 452-9402. Congratulations and blessings!

WISDOM FROM THE CURE OF ARS St. John Vianney, known as the Cure or Pastor of Ars, whose feast day is August 4th, left us many pearls of wisdom. Here is one such treasure recorded in The Spirit of the Cure of Ars translated by Abbe Monnin , page 38: “Worldly people say, it is too difficult to save one’s soul. Yet nothing is easier. To observe the commandments of God and the Church, and to avoid the seven capital sins; or if you like to put it so, to do good and avoid evil: that is all.” Oh, if only we could live that simple truth, we would find peace in this life and be prepared for the next! St. John Vianney is the patron of priests, so please pray for your priests on August 4th.

MEN UNDER CONSTRUCTION The annual Men Under Construction conference will be held this Saturday, August 6th at the St. Pius High School gym in Albuquerque. For only $25 (in advance), you get a Twisters burrito for breakfast, Dion’s sub for lunch, but far more importantly, real life examples of men helping men be better husbands, fathers, and members of our church, all with a stronger Catholic faith. Our keynote speaker is NFL All-Pro Danny Abramowicz sharing how he has re-dedicated his life to God through his EWTN “Crossing the Goal” ministry. Go to www.MenUnderConstructionNM.org, or call 505-831-8253. Get a friend to join you!

THE GOSPEL AND CATHOLIC CHARITIES Many of us are familiar with the Gospel where Jesus, with only five loaves and two fish, provides enough food for the crowd that has gathered. With faith, God will provide all that we need. Catholic Charities is a conduit in which people’s needs are met. Today, many people in New Mexico struggle to pay their rent. Approximately 18% of all New Mexicans live in poverty. About 17,000 New Mexicans are homeless in any given year. In the

2010-2011 fiscal year Catholic Charities helped provide assistance to over 1,000 individuals in around 450 households who were struggling to pay their rent in Albuquerque, preventing homelessness from occurring. With only five loaves and two fish, Catholic Charities is able to help people become self-sufficient and in a home where they are able to thrive as God’s creations. For more information on Catholic Charities’ Center for Self Sufficiency and Housing Assistance please call 505-724-4670.

ALTAR SERVER OUTING All altar servers are invited to a day of bowling and fun at the Isleta Fun Connection on Wednesday, August 10th from 10:00 AM—1:00 PM. Come and enjoy a time of bowling and laser tag and a hamburger lunch. For additional information and to reserve your space no later than August 3rd, contact Leslie Monette at 293-6760. Strike!

CONGRATULATIONS! Congratulations to the Canossian Sisters for fifty years of loving service among God's people in the United States. Thank you Annunciation Parish for welcoming them with open arms and magnanimous hearts! Ad multos annos!
