Under the auspice of The Ministry of Tourism and the Egyptian Tourism Authority, the Characters of Egypt Festival will be organized from 27-29 October 2011. The festival is an annual event that has been organized for four consecutive years

This year, the festival will take place in Aswan in the Island of Heisa on the River Nile. Aswan was chosen by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) as a successful case study to showcase the theme of the 2011 World Tourism Day: “Tourism - linking cultures.” The World Tourism Day was celebrated this year in Aswan on 27 September.

An estimated 33 tribes are expected to participate in the festival - which are divided in seven groups- and represent South Sinai, North Sinai, El Ababda, El Bashareya, Nubia, El Hassayba and Siwa. Besides the music and dance shows that characterize each tribe, poetry and stories telling and a number of informative workshops displaying indigenous practices, beliefs, cuisines, clothing, music, art, literary traditions, friendly sports competitions and conversations will take place during the event. The Characters of Egypt Festival provide guests with the chance to catch a glimpse of life as it exists in the different areas of Egypt’s extensive deserts.

The objective of Characters of Egypt festival is to create a platform of awareness of cultural variances amongst different ethnic and tribal groups and Nile River valley inhabitants. The event offers a rare opportunity to link diverse cultures from all corners of Egypt, experience cultural exchange and connect over their common bonds. Egypt has a rich history of tribal heritage shown in their many dialects and languages.

The island of Heisa is one of the oldest Nubian villages comprised of six Nubian tribes totaling 1,000 habitants. The objective of organizing this year’s festival in this Island is to promote it as a touristic destination. In fact, during the past three years, Characters of Egypt Festival was organized in the south area of the Red sea, which resulted in improving the cultural exchanges in this area, and promoted tourism in Wadi El Gemal protectorate, placing Marsa Alam as one of the prime eco-tourism destinations worldwide.

Elephantine has been inhabited from as early as the fourth millennium BC, and cross-sections of the houses across hundreds of years stand as a testimony to this. In ancient times it was populated by Egyptians, Nubians, Jews, Greeks and Romans. Although briefly abandoned in the 18th century, perhaps due to a plague outbreak, Elephantine has long been inhabited by Nubians, making this paradise in the middle of the Nile one of the last original Nubian settlements.

Two Nubian villages make up Elephantine. To the north of the island is the village of siou, or sand in Nubian. The village is named after sand as the island slopes downwards to the north where it levels with the sandy shores of the Nile.

The elevated antiquities mound located at the southern tip of the island earned the southern village the name of koti, the Nubian word meaning a high place. Some 3000 people live between these villages. The inhabitants of Elephantine have always been known for their friendliness. Even Napoleon’s savants have said that the people of Elephantine were more welcoming towards the French than many other people in Egypt.

Antiquities in Elephantine are plenty, and they include

In the Nubian Desert on the banks of the Nile River across from Elephantine Island the Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan has opened after three years of renovations.

The Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan offers guests two different experiences in the hotel’s rooms and suites. The historic charm of The Palace pervades its 76 accommodations, including 45 suites. The two biggest ones are Agatha Christie and Sir Winston Churchill, with its magnificent and private terrace. Several other famous faces have stayed here, movie stars, heads of state and crowned heads, writers, politicians. The trans-formation managed to preserve the site’s heritage in such touches as the Byzantine-style striped arches of the main lobby.

The hotel unveils a brand new 1,200-m² So SPA that is a temple of well-being with 8 treatment booths, 3-room hammam and indoor pool. Furthermore, the hotel boasts a choice of four restaurants, including the legendary 1902, the Oriental Kebabgy, Palms and Saraya.

Due to the several innovative outdoor work by MS & ETA office Austria, including brilliant use of OOH building projections, they have won the Transport Media Award for outstanding tram branding in October 2011. This is the second award to be won by MS and ETA office, as they have won best Subway station branding in March 2010.

The Transport Media Award awards three winners monthly and is considered one of the most prestigious Advertising-Awards.

“Out of Home has been booming for the past years. More and more agencies use transit media as their advertising space,” said Fred Kendlbacher, Vice President of the Association of Out of Home Austria. He refers to outstanding impact of transit media on the con-sumer, as well as the possibility of selective booking. “It’s a campaign that is straight to the point, demands high service delivery from OOH suppliers and ensures client’s value for money.”

several temples and even a small incomplete pyramid. A museum at the southern edge of the island houses many ancient objects and gives an idea of the island’s history. Immediately outside of the antiquities area is a sure sign that antiquities are everywhere. A red granite statue of a king stands in the middle of the village houses, half buried under the accumulations of several thousand years. This king might have once been feared by his people or might have been loved by those who knew him, yet surely as an Egyptian king he was revered, and he still is today! Women from all over the area, not just Elephantine come to this relic to receive blessing, and the ever-important fertility.

Antiquities aside, Elephantine’s environment makes it a birdwatcher’s paradise. Farmland Birds can be seen in the agricultural lands pecking away, while shore birds can be seen wading on the banks of the Nile. Both resident and migrant birds appear around the island, which is one of the best spots in Egypt to patiently watch birds. The island’s natural scene also includes vast agricultural lands such as mango plantations and palm groves.

Tucked away and off the beaten track is one of the island’s most unusual sites: Animalia. It is an ethno-biological museum crossed with a traditional Nubian house. Unlike the many “Nubian Houses” around Aswan that are mere commercial endeavours, Animalia is all about preserving the cultural and natural heritage of Nubia. A variety of

Under the auspice of the Ministery of Tourism, the 17th Worldwide Tennis Coaches conference, which Egypt is hosting for the first time, will be held in Port Ghalib. This announcement comes as part of the ministry’s efforts to promote tourism and display the diversity of Egyptian resorts for featuring sports tourism.

Mr. Mounir Abdel Nour, Minister of Tourism, stated that all preparations are being made to ensure the facilitation of admission of various nationalities, as well as proper reception of visitors. He further declared that plans are underway to study the possibility of the ministry’s par-ticipation with an Egyptian stand in the 2012 National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA). Kensington Gardens, one of London’s most beautiful parks, is to be the venue for ANOCA.

Port Ghalib Red Sea has partnered with the Egyptian Tennis Federation to host the conference, which takes place every two years and provides tennis coaches with practical on-court coaching presentations, in addition to the latest sport science information and education. More than 500 coaches are expected to participate this year.

Dr. Mustafa Amin, Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Antiquities (SCA) inaugurated the West Bank Groundwater Lowering Project to conserve five major sites from the destruction caused by drainage water.

The West Bank Groundwater Lowering Project was launched two years ago and is the result of co-operation between Egypt and the United States of America, stated Dr. Mustafa Amin. In fact, the USAID has funded the project up to EGP 50 Million.

The project includes the construction of a sophisti-cated drainage system that will decrease ground water levels in the area, and help save important archeologi-cal treasures such as Seti I, Medinet Habu, Ramesseum, Amenhotep III, the Colossi of Tuthmosis III, Tuthmossis IV and Hur Moheb.

stuffed animals and birds, such as desert foxes and wild cats, and a huge stuffed crocodile and a horned viper were brought from Lake Nasser to be displayed among the many other reptiles. Twenty-five species of migrant and resident birds are also displayed alongside a mummified a collection of fish. The centre is named Animalia, as that is the Latin name for the animal kingdom. Animalia’s central purpose is to preserve Elephantine’s natural heritage, and it caters to the many nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers that come to the island.

A tour through the museum starts with the Nubian house itself. An open courtyard covered in clear yellow sand houses an oven and other food storage and preparation

utensils. A small silo which is a ceramic jar that holds grains is displayed next to different grinding contraptions that were used in the past to freshly grind barley or wheat into flour to make bread. An oven rests in the corner, and a storage box is hung from the ceiling to keep food away from ants and other creepy crawlies!

guAngzhou in ChinAEGYPTAIR started operating a new flight to Guangzhou

starting 6 October 2011. With this flight, EGYPTAIR now operates five weekly services to Guangzhou on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays on the new B777-300ER, which is provided with 346 seats and updated technologies and facilities, such as the Full Flat Bed Seats. Flights depart from Cairo at 23:25 and from Guangzhou at 00:05.

Capt Ayman Nasr, EGYPTAIR AIRLINES Chairman & CEO said, “It is also planned to operate four weekly flights to Beijing instead of three on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. With this, EGYPTAIR flights will cover all seven days of the week.”

Nasr added, “Such a step comes within the strategy applied by EGYPTAIR in the previous period to restore nor-mal operations and execute the marketing program that contributes in enhancing the inbound tourism. In addi-tion, this comes due to considering China, and the Far East in general, as a major market that EGYPTAIR needs to achieve competitive advantages and attract more new customers. Moreover, EGYPTAIR offers numerous market-ing promotions, such as the new baggage policy and the flex pricer tool.”

bedroom, with traditional basketry on the walls. Such baskets are today made of plastic, but the examples on the walls are woven from palm reeds and natural fibres. A sitting room lies at the end of the courtyard, and there, palm tree products and traditional basketry are displayed amidst an array of colourful wall paintings.

Nubian food is also on display. Since old Nubia was a desert dominated environment, and agriculture was sparse, Nubians heavily relied on dried vegetables in their meals, including sun-dried tomatoes. Now, living in the middle of civilisation, dried Nubian foods are a thing of the past. Other foods on display are bamia (okra or Lady’s Fingers), Nubian abreg bread, and dried and salted fish.

The camping to salvage the antiquities of Nubia drew significant international attention. Many photographers

a n d a n t h r o p o l o g i s t s took that opportunity to document Old Nubia. This heritage that has been lost for over 50 years is presented in Animal ia through a collection of photographs of Old Nubia and Lake Nasser. Photos of celebrations, people, daily lives, antiquities and the painful relocation are all displayed.

An excit ing geology display is also set up, and includes exemplars of the various types of rocks from the Nubian Desert.

Another intriguing aspect of Animalia are the walls, which are covered with

colourful wall paintings that are based on both Old Nubian and more modern Nubian designs. In Old Nubia the wall paintings showed simple representations that included scorpions and children; elements based on the immediate environment. Modern Nubian designs are also based on the surrounding of the modern Nubians, and show palm trees, boats, the Nile and greenery.

After your visit to Animalia, you can sit on the roof top café drinking tea or karkade (hibiscus) overlooking the surrounding agricultural lands.

Heritage is not just buildings and objects, but it is also nature and landscape.

Animalia is open everyday. www.animalia-eg.comTel: 0105456420
