Having completed the work on the New Suez Canal project in 2015, Egypt is now poised to implement the second phase of its vision for the future: expanding its maritime infrastructure and trade capacity in order to take advantage of its unique global position. Key to the implementation of this vision are a number of projects aimed at developing the country’s maritime trade capacity, namely the Suez Canal Zone project, the development of river transport and the development of the country’s ports and inland logistics facilities to support transshipment and value added services.

The 2016 Egypt Ports and Waterways Summit will serve as a platform to share information about these projects and to discuss how the country can realise its vision for the future - dealing with issues like project finance, logistics, port operations and economics in order to advance this rapidly moving sector.

08:30 Registration and welcome refreshments08:55 Chairman’s welcome remarks09:00 The current status of Egyptian ports and their progress

towards achieving Egypt’s vision for the future In this presentation, the head of Egypt’s Maritime Transport Sector will outline how Egypt will achieve its vision for the future. His Excellency Rear Admiral Tarek Ghanem, Chairman, Maritime Transport Sector

09:30 Panel Discussion: Enhancing the competitiveness of Egyptian ports Egyptian port authorities are presently engaged in a number of major expansion projects aimed at increasing the capacity and competitiveness of their ports, with many new terminals and hinterland infrastructure projects underway in the country. In this session, the senior leadership from Egypt’s port authorities will be invited to discuss what their plans are to ensure the future competitiveness of their ports. This session will consider: • What can Egyptian authorities do to ensure that they remain competitive to international shipping? • What projects are currently underway in Egypt to achieve this? • What future plans are in place to ensure the continued prominence of the Egyptian maritime industry? Panellists: His Excellency Rear Admiral Tarek Ghanem, Chairman, Maritime Transport Sector Rear Admiral Essam El Din Badawy, Secretary General of the Union, Arab Sea Ports Federation Rear Admiral Ayman Saleh, Chairman, Damietta Port Authority Rear Admiral Medhat Attia, Chairman, Alexandria Port Authority

10:15 Coffee and networking break

11:00 The Suez Canal Economic Zone and its impact on all shipping Stage two of Egypt’s vision for the future is the development of the SCZone; turning the areas around the Suez Canal into leading international areas for the transshipment of goods, manufacturing, IT and other value-added services to the maritime industry. In this session, the vice chairman of the zone will explain what impact this project will have on shipping in Egypt. Rear Admiral Abdelkader Darwish, Vice Chairman, General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone

11:30 Increasing port efficiency and security In this session, the chairman of Egypt’s largest and

oldest port will examine how ports in Egypt can address two of their greatest challenges: security and efficiency. Rear Admiral Medhat Attia, Chairman, Alexandria Port Authority

12:00 The development of Damietta port Having recently conducted works to dredge the

basin and attract larger vessels to the port, as well as embarking on an ambitious mega-project in the form of the grain terminal and logistics hub, Damietta port has been very busy of late. In this session, the port’s current progress will be evaluated and new projects presented to the audience. Rear Admiral Ayman Saleh, Chairman, Damietta Port Authority

12:30 KAEC’s Industrial Valley success as the new logistics and manufacturing hub on the red sea Collaboration between the public and private sectors is essential in establishing successful economic zones. King Abdullah Economic City in Saudi Arabia is the largest privately developed infrastructure in the region and an excellent example of how business and

government can work together to address emerging economic realities. The city’s learning experience is particularly relevant in light of planned developments in Egypt and the Suez Canal. Rayan Qutub, Chief Executive Officer, King Abdullah Economic City – Industrial Valley

13:00 Networking lunch

14:00 Success determinants of establishing an international logistic centre in the Suez Canal Zone The success of the newly established SCZone depends on a number of factors, and history has shown that the creation of such zones is far from easy. This presentation will focus on determining the required success factors for the project of establishing an international logistic centre in the surrounding region of the Suez Canal and a comparison with the required basic elements to establish such logistic centres on a global scale compared with the available elements of success in the Suez Canal region. Prof. Nagwa Khashaba, Professor of Economics, Suez Canal University

14:30 Using technology to increase the performance of ports Modern technology in the form of IT solutions and advances in communications has enabled the ports of the world to increase their performance to previously unseen levels in recent years. This session will seek to demonstrate the presently available benefits of these technologies and what they can offer Egyptian maritime transport. Prof. Dr. Mohamed Ali, Dean of International Transport Institute for Postgraduate Studies, AASTMT, and Advisor to the Minister for Transport and Logistics, Ministry of Transport

15:00 Security management systems in ports: The practical approach Port security is a key issue for any port looking to handle large volumes of goods. Keeping track of everything passing through the port can be a headache. In this session, the head of safety and security for Jordan’s leading port will examine how best to manage port security systems. Eng. Feras Altaweil, Head of HSSE, Aqaba Container Terminal

15:30 The benefits of implementing RFID systems to shipping and supply chain management RFID technology has risen to become a revolutionary element in supply chain management. It is not just a replacement for barcodes. RFID ensures that the right goods are available in the right place with no discrepancies and zero errors. It makes the supply chain considerably more precise and improves the efficiency and reliability of the entire chain. As real-time information is made available also administration and planning processes can be significantly improved. This presentation will consider the benefits of implementing such a system in Egypt. Ashraf Kotait, Port Operation Expert

16:00 Enhancing the competitiveness of Egyptian ports: Challenges and the 2050 visions Egyptian ports need to be able to offer facilities and services which compete with regional and global rivals if Egypt is to achieve its vision for the future. This presentation will provide an overview of the challenges facing the implementation of this vision and the way forward for the future. Dr. Khaled El Sakty, Assistant Professor, AASTMT

SUMMIT DAY TWO: WEDNESDAY, 21 SEPTEMBER 2016

08:30 Registration and welcome refreshments

08:55 Chairman’s welcome remarks and summary of conclusions from day one

09:00 The role of maritime administrations in increasing port efficiency and security Governments owe a duty to their ports to ensure their utmost effectiveness, both in terms of their efficiency and security. In this presentation, this role will be examined by the Director General of the Jordan Maritime Authority. His Excellency Salah Abu Afifa, Director General, Jordan Maritime Commission

09:30 Session reserved for Royal IHC

10:00 Enhancing the competitiveness of river transport in Egypt River transport constitutes both an environmentally friendly and safe means of transporting goods in large volume, relieving pressures on overburdened roads and making the most of Egypt’s most glorious natural asset; the River Nile. In this session, the River Transport Authority’s chairman, Admiral Reda Ismail will assess what the RTA is doing to try and enhance the role of river transport in Egypt. Rear Admiral Reda Ismail, Chairman, River Transport Authority

10:30 The development of Egypt’s Dry and Land Port Network Developing in tandem with Egypt’s ports and

industry are a network of inland logistics centres. The development of this network is overseen by the General Authority for Land and Dry Ports and in this presentation, the authority’s chairman will provide delegates with an overview of this process. General Fouad Osman, Chairman, General Authority for Land and Dry Ports

11:00 Coffee and networking break

11:45 The role of tugboats in keeping harbours safe Expansions to port infrastructure and larger volumes

of shipping invariably place an increased burden on port services like tugboats. Tugboats thus play a major role in ensuring the safety of harbours and ease of navigation. This presentation will examine this role in light of increasing shipping volumes. Dr. Osama El Morsi, Head of Marine Engineering Department, Port Said Port Authority

12:15 Session reserved for Buhler AG

12:45 The framework for national maritime security legislation to enhance ships’ and ports’ security Port security is an important topic, with ports needing to balance the need to move goods quickly with the need to protect goods from theft and damage and prevent incidences of smuggling and trafficking. Faced with this need to both develop port infrastructure and increase security, it is now necessary for Egyptian ports to develop their security infrastructure. This session will attempt to outline how to approach this balancing act. Captain Mohamed Abdel Fattah, Chief of Training Department at Regional Maritime Security Institute, AASTMT

13:15 Networking lunch

14:15 The impact of Arab maritime security on the maritime industry There are seven main narrow waterways in the world considered as part of the major trade routes for global seaborne oil transportation. These narrow waterways are the Strait of Hormuz, Bab el-Mandab, Suez Canal, Strait of Malacca, Danish Straits, Turkish Straits and Panama Canal. Three of those main chokepoints lie in the Arab territory.

Disruptions to the international oil transit routes lying in Arab areas could affect oil prices and add thousands of miles of transit in alternative routes if there is any insecurity. 63% of total world petroleum exports travel via seaborne trade and more than half of this amount is transported in the Arab strategic waterways. This session will analyse how Arab maritime security is so critical to global trade. Captain Maged Hassabou, Maritime Security Expert, AASTMT

14:45 The vital role of the Suez Canal in world trade Handling the transit of more than 17,000 ships per year,

the Suez Canal is undoubtedly one of the world’s most important waterways. This presentation will analyse the advantages of the Suez Canal as well as some of the most important market developments in international transport and their impact on the navigation of the canal. Emad Fawaz, Economic Researcher, Suez Canal Authority

15:15 Improving maritime training for safely transiting the Suez Canal The safety of shipping on the Suez Canal is of the utmost importance and the Suez Canal Authority is well aware of this. To this end, Suez Canal pilots, new pilots and tug pilots are provided with extensive simulation training. This presentation will provide an overview of this process and the simulations used to ensure the utmost safety of this vital waterway. Eng. Sabry Nasr, Head of Technical Section, Simulation Complex, Suez Canal Authority

15:45 Chairman’s closing remarks end of summit
