We believe that many of you had childhood dreams of flying like a bird, having magical power, or being invisible. But, the dreams are only dreams and can only come to live in lives of imaginary heroes. Why do we need a hero? Because he or she can save us from bad situations, or help solve problems? In today’s turbulent world, what kind of heroes do we need to save the planet?

This inauguration issue of the egreen magazine features green heroes around the globe, including Asian countries. In Thailand, we also have eco-friendly businesses, especially those in the industrial sector who were formerly viewed as “problem-makers.” If you regularly read the egreen magazine from this issue onwards, you will see the adaptation and collaboration to save the planet made by businesses in industrial production and service sector as well as those in energy sector.

The egreen is Thailand’s first bilingual magazine that explores eco-friendly solutions and practices in industrial businesses. We wish to be part of green solutions in bringing new knowledge and inspiring all of you. We believe that our good intention is a right tool to sustainably make our world a better place.

GE unveiled the new engine GEnx which was developed from GE90 engine fully equipped whole range of innovative features i.e. Twin-Annular Pre-mixed Swirler Combustor (TAPS) that mixes air and fuel to ensure clean engine combustion and thus reduce emission.

GEnx Engine offers up to 15% improved fuel efficiency, equivalent to saving up to 70 million baht of fuel for one airplane per year. The GEnx combuster reduces aviation-regulated gas up to more than 95% below. Featured under the concept “GE Ecomagination”, GE engines are developed with an aim for fuel efficiency and environmental awareness. GE’s objectives include reduction in gas emission by 1% and cut energy consumption by 30% by 2012.

Thai MMA, a joint-venture of SCG Chemicals introduced SHINKOLITE LX acrylic sheets with continuous casting technology that tap into the segment of environment-oriented advertisement display boards. The product was featured at the recent 2011 Architect Fair.

SHINKOLITE LX is equipped with Mitsubishi Rayon’s world latest technology. Thai MMA is the first manufacturer in Thailand to produce acrylic sheets with such technology. Dr. Wannarat Channukul, Minister of Energy presided over the WEC Asia Regional Meeting with the theme “Green Energy: Global Challenges, Regional Opportunities” hosted by Department of Alternative Energy and Efficiency. The platform aimed for knowledge sharing in energy policies and technology in Asia where Thailand also took part in presenting its own energy conservation and alternative energy policies. It was also a forum for business cooperation and promotion in green energy initiatives in Asia.

Amata B. Grimm Power Group co-signed the deal with Toshiba Plant Systems and Services Corporation, Japan with its affiliate TPSC (Thailand) to operate the construction of two combined cycle cogeneration plants worth 10 billion in Amata City Industrial Estate, Rayong. The two plants will have a total capacity of about 240 megawatts. The power plants are scheduled to go into commercial operation on June 1 and November 1, 2013.

Singapore plans to install LED street lights to replace high pressure sodium lamps. Led by leading firm in industrial planning JTC Corporation and Foxsemicon Integrated Technology (Fiti), the government is testing out the system in various parts of Singapore to compare their performance with conventional lamps. Results showed that at the same level of brightness, LED street lights had longer lifespan and consumed around 18 per cent less energy than conventional lights. More tests will be conducted in a broader scale such as at CleanTech industrial park. It is estimated that the project can be concluded in 11 Q3. Despite its higher cost, LED street lights could answer the need for energy saving in a long run. Singapore expects the system to be rolled out in full scale in the next two or three years.

Bank of Indonesia (BI) and the Ministry of Environment signed a joint agreement for coordination to enhance the role of banking under a framework of environmental protection and manage-ment. Environment Minister Gusti Mohammad Hatta remarked that to ensure sustainable development, the banking industry would provide financial assistance especially a loan to companies for their management of issues related to environmental protection. Meetings to seek technical cooperation between BI and related agencies will follow suit. Indonesia is one among many countries that adopted the Green Bangkok policy as a form of active bank contribution to green efforts. The current corresponding draft related to green loans is to be concluded in the near future.

From the latest study of water use in household shows that Malaysians use an average of 226 litres of water per person daily, which is way above the quantity used by ASEAN neighbours. 70% of respondents said that they would continue this water usage habit for the next three years. Green Technology and Water Resource Minister Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui expressed concerns over the study and said that if Malaysians can limit the usage to 165 litres per person, they can save up to 28.2 cu.m per household. The Ministry has unveiled a series of awareness campaigns to promote Green Living and tackle the water shortage issue.

Being a large electronic parts manufacturer in Hong Kong, PC Partner is using RFID to improve assembly line efficiency in its two plants in Tong Guan, China. The technology is to detect errors in assembly line which can lead to unnecessary cost. In average, PC partner needs to assemble more than 200 million of PCBAs per month. The Cogiscan innovative technology of TTC (Track, Trace and Control system) was integrated in order to manage cost and minimize errors. The company has started installed the system to 33 assembly lines on more than 100 machines since 2010. The expansion plan to cover every machine in the assembly line is underway.

IKEA, Sweden furniture megastore is also taking alternative energy seriously. IKEA is investing in the construction of the company’s windmill in Dalarna County in Sweden. Its minimum capacity to generate electricity is to supply power to 17 IKEA showrooms in Sweden. The company’s goal is to apply 100% alternative energy in producing heat and cool system as well as lighting. IKEA’s pilot energy saving program started out with the installation of 52 windmills which can generate 10% of the total power. This new windmill field requires a considerable amount of budget worth many million dollars. In late 2011, IKEA is opening its first mega store in Thailand under the name “Mega Bangna” on 254 rais of land located on Bangna-Trad KM 8. The project is invested through IKANO, subsidiary of Inter IKEA System with the budget of 12 billion baht. It is estimated that at Mega Bangna, alternative energy will be applied to be in line with IKEA policy.

A hindrance of windmill is its installation as it may not suit the vertical architectural structure. With its rising demand, windmill manufacturers have offered the new product VAWT turbine that enables windmills to be installed into high rises or vertical buildings. VAWT turbine is smaller in terms of size and thus requires less space for installation. VAWT is a suitable choice for small-medium operation. The vertical windmill will be installed as a pilot project first in Chicago with its capacity to generate power of 4.5 KW and use the wind flow as low as 11.1 mph. One windmill costs about 16,000 USD. VAWT manufacturers include the US, Canada, the Netherlands, Finland, Italy, Germany and the UK. Urban green energy is one among international companies that installed this type of windmill to their branch offices in 35 countries.

You are either a genius or a dreamer to come up with an idea of a solar power plant on the moon. Such overreaching idea is brainchild of a Japanese man working for Shimisu Corporation. It is one of the six mega projects of earth dwellers who dream of “Lunar ring” to build a solar power plant on 6,800 miles on the moon. Robots will be used as labor to carry bricks and stones from the moon for the construction. If this isn’t surreal enough, the Japanese man also presented the idea to create “water” from Hydrogen taken from moon surface. And how to transport this energy back to the earth? Microwave transmission is the answer. This is one alternative energy we can perhaps resort to.

“Who’s your Green Hero?” is a project initiated by egreen magazine, surveying who’s green hero among people in Thai industrial sector. The aim of the project is to find role models that inspire people in Thai industrial sector to become aware on the environment. Following is a summary of the survey, some information of which is new and resourceful to the organizing team. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the responses. Among the Green Heroes are :

Former Vice President of the US, and the author of An Inconvenient Truth, a best-selling book on the threat of and solutions to global warming, and the subject of the movie of the same title, which has already become one of the top documentary films in history. He travelled extensively throughout the US to give lectures on global warming, founded the Save Our Selves Organization, the organizer of Live Earth Charity Concerts, and won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

One of the world’s most powerful non-governmental environmental organizations with offices in over 40 countries around the world. Founded in 1971 in Canada, the organization is known for its non-violent approaches on environmental conservation campaigns, ensuring the ability of the Earth to nurture life in all its diversity. The Rainbow Warrior Ship is its identity, which sails around the world, supporting a number of Greenpeace protest activities.

In the 1997 book “Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature”, biologist Janine Benyus not only invents a new field that she has named Biomimicry, but inverts the way we all think about design. The new theory has influenced designers, businessmen, architects, and natural scientists to apply nature in their creativity and to live harmoniously with nature.

The “11th Hour” is a documentary film by Hollywood actor Leonardo Dicaprio about problems facing the planet’s life systems. The “11th Hour” conveys the last hour we have in restorative solutions and actions. The actor has created, produced and narrated the film. With a plot different from that of Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth, the film received generally favorable reviews from critics.

Co-founder of the David Suzuki Foundation, David Suzuki won the best scientist, environmentalist and broadcaster awards. One of his fortes is to explain complicated scientific information in an easy-to-understand language. His nature documentaries for television and radio, aired in many countries around the world, won several awards. He has also written 43 books, reflect-ing his leadership in sustainable ecology.

Being a world’s largest exporter, the steaming coal industry is a driving force to Indonesia’s economy. In mid-2010, Indonesia announced a new green economy development strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emission from the coal industry which is estimated as high as 120 million tones in 2015. Despite its many concerning issues i.e. deforestation or palm oil, one thing is clear: Indonesia wants to boost its green image. Being the world’s largest palm oil producer, the government has devised the ISPO - Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil strategy which will be rolled out within this year and has the capacity to produce more than 23 million tones of palm oil. Being a new economy, Vietnam’s real estate industry is experiencing a soaring growth. According to AFIRE (Association of Foreign Investors in Real Estate), Vietnam ranks no. 4 as an attractive, competitive place for real estate next to Brazil, China and India. Alberta-based Motive Industries unveiled Canada’s first electric vehicle by using the engine made of hemp. Manufactured and test run under the trademark “Kestrel”, such technology is an innovation of Alberta Innovates Technology Futures (AITF). The company uses hemp (a local plant similar to marijuana and widely used textile industry i.e. bags, clothes, doily, table cloth, etc.) in Vegreville, Canada because of its lightness, hence less energy consumption and less Co2 emission.

In Thailand, there are several highland agricultural programs promoting the growing and adaptation of hemp to answer the growing needs in domestic and overseas markets. New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) of Nagoya University and Finland’s Aalto University unveiled the latest joint research on highly-effective carbon nano tubes based on plastic substrate produced. Japanese scientists led by Ming Xu of National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology have previously discovered the making of carbon nanotube rubber-like material that retains bounce at extreme temperatures even being frozen in liquid nitrogen.

The newly-discovered material consists of network of layers made of carbon nano tubes. The jointly-connected layers will allow enhanced flexibility and can resist extreme changes of temperature. Laboratory test shows that the material can be heated in 1,000 oC or frozen in -200 oC and is still able to retain its form. With such property, the carbon nano tubes can be used as electricity carrier that is resistant to heat and cold. The material also comes in a very small size that can be utilized in small gadgets. This will probably change the face of electrical appliances. We are talking about spaceship or commercial products as mobile phones. More research and development need to be done. Commercial viability is also a key point of consideration. As of now, imagination plays a key role. Meanwhile, research on carbon nano tubes is getting published more widely. This could be an indicator that this ‘small’ technology will definitely take a big position in the near future.

Currently, there are about 70,053 factories in Thailand. About 14,000 factories, which accounts for 20%, have reported waste management tracking data in 2010. 1.9 million tons of hazardous waste was reported; 17.4% are non-toxic waste compared to 2009 data which shows 2.2 million tons of hazardous waste and 23.3 non-toxic waste.

“Thailand Energy Awards” to ASEAN

Thailand Energy Awards is not new to those who are in energy business. In fact, it has been organized for 12 years already by Alternative Energy Development and Energy Saving Department. With an objective to promote morale for energy entrepreneurs and energy saving awareness, it can be said that the award is probably one of its kind that recognizes the energy saving effort to tackle global warming in a most concrete manner. Many have turned to Green Marketing so much so that it has become a fashion. Considering the green context which is still en vogue, one may be able to ride on the band wagon for a while. However, what to do with a brand new product in order to create brand awareness with cost-effective strategy?

In contrast to the widespread use of digitalized marketing, what drives products to consumers is still ‘perception’; according to a Nielsen study, it is ‘word of mouth’ that influences people on their purchasing decision. Other factors are articles and product websites.

Add Green Content to Generate Green CommentWhen applying a word of mouth strategy to Green Marketing, product owner needs to add green content to their websites in a form of news, activities or articles and update them regularly. After that, green consumers would express their opinions online and access to the product website or send emails to the company. This creates a good opportunity for a product owner to control and monitor opinions or take questions from customers as well as address problems and negative perception raised by their customers.

Last but not least, whether or not you will apply green marketing, the information needs to match the true qualification of products as advertised. Being environmental conscious means an integration of science-based evidences and feelings for the world. If one cannot do as one says, chances are consumers can carry a ‘negative’ word of mouth that undermines your business and product.

The Future Direction for Green Business on a Small Leaflet

‘Green matter’ has become an immediate issue both for businesses and consumers. Did you know that every little detail can make a difference for a business; Product label is one, for example. Who would have thought this is the future of green business.

A multitude of reports has come out last year and again in early 2011, pointing out to the same conclusion that the world is moving on to the green path. Here are some data:

n Many global corporate organizations have allocated special budget to promote environmental and social responsibility image despite the recent economic recess.

n Sustainability is the key issue that drives companies’ policy and vision.

n Implementation of sustainable action plan is applied to every level of operation such as branch office or affiliates.

n Business has turned to ‘a right path’ and more aware of sensitive impact even on its competitors.

The Thai Green Label Scheme was initiated by the Thailand Business Council for Sustainable Development (TBCSD), chaired by Mr. Anand Panyarachun in October 1993 as a TBCSD council project. What do consumers want to see in labels?Consumers have become more aware of the environmental impact and are looking into a way to integrate the ‘green’ lifestyle to their everyday life. Latest research from Deutsche Post DHL titled “Delivering Tomorrow - Customer Needs in 2020 and beyond” shows that consumers are willing to pay more for a product or a service that shows responsibility to environment. By the year 2020, a milk carton may have to bear a label clarifying the Co2 emission during the manufacturing and distribution process, not just the calories table.

REACH is the European Community Regulation on chemicals and their safe use (EC 1907/2006). It deals with the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemical substances. The law entered into force on 1 June 2007. The REACH Regulation places greater responsibility on industry to manage the risks from chemicals and to provide safety information on the substances. Substances in volumes ≥ 1,000 metric tons/yearHazardous substances or ≥ 100 metric tons/yearCMR substances and ≥ 1 metric ton/year must register within November 30, 2010 (phase I).

Manufacturers and importers are required to gather information on the properties of their chemical substances, which will allow their safe handling, and to register the information in a central database run by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) in Helsinki.

The new document is a stand-alone guidance on the labelling and packaging rules for substances and mixtures as set out in the CLP Regulation. It is addressed to manufacturers, importers, downstream users and dis-tributors of chemical substances and mixtures. The guidance clarifies in particular: • what aspects to consider when estimating the label size needed; • what types of supplemental information are possible, and where to place this information on the label; • the conditions for small packaging exemptions; • the interaction between CLP and the transport labelling rules; • how to select the most appropriate set of precautionary statements for the label; • the transitional provisions for substances and mixtures already on the market.

The new stand-alone guidance document replaces the sections dealing with labelling and selection of precautionary statements of the existing Guidance on the Application of the CLP Criteria.

Build team from all department members except executives - to enhance communication effectiveness, your green team should be consisted of staff members from different functions and departments. Avoid inviting executives to the team because we need people who ‘do’ and ‘drive’ not just give commands.

Set clear objectives - Hold the first meeting to discuss and fine tune with one another as well as state clear objective of this mission i.e. to reduce carbon emission level or target zero carbon, etc.

Meet regularly to strengthen the team - Regular meetings allow team members to exchange ideas and brainstorm as well as keep the morale high. Besides, you should hold a meeting with executives at least every three months to update and inform them of the project. The best communication and most convenient tool is email.

In October, 2010 Green Peace released “The Guide to Greener Electronics” which ranks the 18 top manufacturers of personal computers, mobile phones, TVs and games consoles according to their policies on toxic chemicals, recycling and climate change,

It is not always the case when people say Nokia belongs to the older generation. The company stays in 1st place in environmental best practices especially on the toxic chemicals criteria, followed by energy, and does least well on e-waste issues. All its new models have been free of PVC since the end of 2005, and all new models of mobile phones and accessories launched in 2010 are on track to be free of brominated compounds, chlorinated flame retardants and antimony trioxide.

ถาคณรองวาอะไรจะขนาดนน ขอบอกวาของจรงทชาวกวตองแยกมมากกวาตวอยางทยกมาเยอะ เพราะวธการแยกขยะของเขาอาศยความเขาใจในกระบวนการผลตดวย เชน ในขยะทเปนขวดพลาสตกหนงชน ประกอบดวยพลาสตกตางชนดกน กตองแยกแลวนำาแตละชนสวนไปรวมกบชนดเดยวกนเพอสงตอไปสกระบวนการแปรรปขยะในลำาดบตอไป

wet garbage while the smaller ones are for recyclable items such as plastic bottles and cans. The key of the project is to have garbage collected on the streets of even-numbered houses on even days and the other side of odd-numbered houses on odd days only.

Rubbish and Recycling in ChristchurchPrior to the recent earthquake, we visited Christchurch. The Christchurch City Council has a rubbish recycling campaign, with big posters on rubbish bins to inform what can and cannot go in recycling bins. Also brochures are distributed to explain how to sort items in details. For example, newspapers and magazines need to be tied up in bundles, and cardboard packaging need to be folded flat while dirty papers cannot go in the recycling bins. Milk and juice cartons must be rinsed and dried. Soft drink aluminum cans need to be separated from food tins and steel cans. The 1 type plastic bottles need to be rinsed while the lids must go into separated bins.

Actually, there are much more details than examples cited here because to sort materials, we need to understand production processes of such materials for further recycling processes.

Paper and cardboard: Some paper and cardboard is recycled locally in New Zealand, but much of it is exported to Vietnam and Indonesia and is recycled into corrugated card-board.

Office paper: Goes to Korea and is recycled into tissue products.

Newspaper and glossy paper: Sent to Thailand and the Philippines and recycled into newsprint.

Plastic: Plastic is processed in New Zealand, Australia and China. It is recycled into soft drink bottles, pillow and sleeping bag filling, recycling bins, and speed bumps.

Glass: Glass is recycled into new glass bottles and jars and can also be used as a sand substitute in road construction. Glass is recycled in New Zealand at the O-I New Zealand recycling plant where it is first sorted into its seven colors.

Cans: Most steel cans are recycled in New Zealand and made into more steel products. Aluminium cans are sent to Australia or Japan for recycling.

The Paka Kyaw life has evolved so much that they have successfully developed their own hydroelectric power plant. Located in Jomthong district of Chiang Mai, “San Dindaeng Village” was selected as one of the 6 pilot areas for “One Source, One Energy” – a collaboration project between Department of Alternative Energy and Efficiency and Egco Group. The project is part of community empowerment in line with HM the King’s philosophy of sufficient economy.

Check dams made of natural materials / From trees to electricity polesThe hydroelectric power plant was designed based on ‘nature’. The construction material of check dams are sourced locally i.e. dead trees, rocks and stones found along the stream and big trees are used as electricity poles for power distribution. Areas for water diversion were designed to allow the water to be drawn back to the river source for agricultural consumption.

The plant is located 200 meters lower than the residence area of villagers. One can see an electrical cord tied from one tree to another and seamlessly blended into nature. The idea is to build a power plant that can exist in harmony with the green. That is the sanctity of the forest revered by the local community.

Continuous care of the forest which is the source of water at San Dindaeng Village contributes to carbon dioxide reduction by 255 tons per year and preserves the forest land up to 23,000 rai annually

In terms of management, the village committee agreed with the village members that a service fee of 3 baht per 1 light bulb will be applied considering the 24-hour power generation. A pay-per-use rate will be applied as well i.e. a 14” TV will be charged at 5 baht per month and 21” TV will be charged at 10 baht per month. The main objective of this project is to provide electrical power to all households.

What is the progress of Amata initiative in creating a ‘Perfect City’? Has it come close to completion?Not yet. It’s still in progress. I want to make this a ‘living city’ so the development plan is ongoing and needs to be updated constantly to capture the needs of changing lifestyle.

How does this ‘living’ city see top priorities like the environmental policy?Amata has always positioned itself as clean & green keeper. Today, we want to be “eco” in everything and we want a system that allows us to co-exist with the industrial aspect of our business too. We have implemented many action plans already because being eco-friendly is not just a nice thing to do but it is a must and we must act fast.

Can you give a few examples?To put it simply, when we think of ‘green space’, we think of trees. Amata has allocated 51% of the total area to green space. For water, we have AMATA Water for water recycling with the management of zero waste discharge that we can vent back the water for other uses in the industrial estate. For waste, we categorize that into two parts: toxic waste which is to be transferred to other operation unit and non-toxic waste can be reused for power generation. Our current capacity is 1.5 megawatts by which we can turn 50-60 tons of waste into energy. For air and pollution management, we have to comply with EIA standard. Any operator that fails this standard will not be allowed to operate in our estate. So you can see we have a comprehensive plan to manage these issues. Moreover, we also have ‘monkey cheek’ water retention initiative or you can call it ‘elephant cheek’ because the size is very huge. This can be a water storage for the community.

You are very active, both thinker and doer in environment projects. Do you have any ‘green hero’ that you look up to?(Laughing) Honestly, environment is my hero. People like Mr. Al Gore is also a significant figure that makes us aware more of the problem for planet earth. Environment is my hero and my friend. If our friend is hurt, we have to do something. So the best way is not to hurt your friend, I think.
