EuroGames DiscussionAt the recent AGA 2009 in The Hague, we decided to postpone the discussion on future EuroGames. We acknowledged this topic must be seen from different viewpoints and we knew this would take more time. Lots of work has been done already by several individuals and groups like the EuroGames Advisory Committee and previous EuroGames organizing teams. Together with the knowledge and experience of organizing tournaments by our member clubs we will have a fruitful discussion where all interests will be dealt with.

In order to have time to prepare this discussion and giving as much interested members the chance to be present, the initiative takers Jan Fröhlich (FVV) and Lou Manders (EGLSF) set the date and place of the discussions at the weekend of 4th - 6th of December 2009 in Frankfurt. Time to discuss will not interfere with the tournament so everybody can do their sport as well.

If you are interested in participating the discussion on future EuroGames, please write an e-mail to [email protected]. Frankfurt welcomes you all.

EuroGames 2011 Rotterdam

From July 20th untill July 24th 2011 Rotterdam will be the host of the 13th edition of the EuroGames. 32 different sports, 2 villages, a spectacular culture programme, a new revolutionary way of

European co-operation and lots of other interesting events. Rotterdam is ready to surprise Europe.

Show your colour Rotterdam is a city of diversity and tolerance. It is no issue if you are black or white, male or female, gay or straight. Based on that arguments we’ve set up our keyvalues ‘Colour’ and our

slogan Show your colour. ‘Colour’ stands for: Celebration, Outgoing, Loving, Outreach, Understanding and Respect. The EuroGames 2011 in Rotterdam: a colourful event, with a very colourful atmosphere. Feel free to come and come to feel free!

A bridge between east and west Rotterdam is working closely together with the EuroGames 2012 organization in Budapest, in order to give a clear statement: Equal rights for every lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender throughout Europe. Together with Budapest Rotterdam is determined to make these EuroGames the most remarkeble editions ever.

More information Read all about the Eurogames 2011 sports, culture, the party’s and the colourful atmosphere on our website http://2011.eurogames.info/2011. The site will be online soon. If you want more information in the meantime, please contact the organization by e-mail [email protected].

EuroGames 2012 Budapest

The GLBTQ community and their friends in Hungary were very glad to hear the result of the voting of the EGLSF AGA in the Hague in march 2009. The joint project of Rotterdam and Budapest will be a historic event bringing thousands of GLBTQ sportsmen and -women first time to the former eastern part of Europe.

Atlasz Sport Club and Frigo have both hosted already several successful tournaments in Budapest in the last 6 years (basketball, dance, swimming, handball, badminton) but the Eurogames will open a totally new perspective with more participants and much more visibility. Eurogames 2012 will be the first big international GLBTQ event in Hungary with a lot of expectations from both in Hungary and all over Europe.

We organized a newsconference a few days after the AGA for representatives of all major Hungarian media, who were very interested in our project. There were articles and interviews in the biggest newpapers, TV channels and news portals.

Bidding for the Eurogames was a big challenge, now we can finally concentrate on the preparations and organizing. We would like to thank the members and board of the EGLSF for all your support so far, and hope to see you all in Rotterdam in 2011 and in Budapest in 2012.

EGLSF Board meetingsThe extended EGLSF Board already had two teleconferences - March 24 & April 22, where current pending issues were discussed. The board will meet May 18-24 in Benidorm, Spain where important topics will be discussed in details. The agenda will include some of the topics raised by the AGA. If you have any additional suggestions, please email EGLSF Co-president Anne Jensen at [email protected].

Volup Warsaw

Volup is the first Polish gay volleyball club, located in Warsaw. It all begun at the end of 2005 when Marcin, our first president, moved back to Warsaw after having lived in Frankfurt for a few years. He decided to create the first gay volleyball club, just like many of which you can find in Western Europe. The aim was to promote volleyball in the LGBT community.

Over the years we grew in size and started actively participating in different

tournaments all over Europe. We went to Berlin, Barcelona, Frankfurt, Halle, London, Milan, Prague, Stuttgart, and made long-lasting friendships. Gay volleyball exists in Poland for over 3 years now but we feel that the golden age is yet to come. This is indeed true for Volup, as our campaign to attract new players was set in motion: an article one of the biggest national daily newspapers caused a lot of discussion, which resulted in establishing cooperation with a lesbian volleyball club as well as registering the club as association. Today, we have approx. 40 members who play on different levels: A, B and C. Our goal is to create a place where everyone, regardless of their level of volleyball skills, could find a place to share common passion for volleyball.

This year we decided to join the EGLSF network in order to establish further contacts and become part of the European volleyball society. This is also the reason for organizing the 1st International Volleyball Tournament in Poland – Volup Summer Cup 2009, which will take place on June 12-14 in Warsaw. We hope that many foreign teams will participate in this historic event. If you join us this year, we assure that you will want to return to Warsaw in the future!

For more information about the club and the tournament, see http://www.volup.pl

Mitcham seeks sponsors23 April 2009

Australian Matthew Mitcham, the winner of the 10-metre platform at the Beijing Olympics, said last week that his decision to talk openly about being gay may have prevented him from getting the proper

corporate sponsorship deals.

The 21-year-old came out in a newspaper interview before Beijing, where he made history by receiving the highest mark for an individual dive at Olympics.

Although Micham received positive feedback from fellow athletes and the media since coming out publicly, he admits he has attracted substantially less sponsorship compared to other gold medallists.

“As soon as anybody looks up to you, you automatically become a role model whether you choose to be or not, and you can either embrace it or not,” Micham said. “I choose to embrace it and try to be the best role model I can be.” He also added that he hasn’t experienced any homophobia in sport but he is hoping not to experience it in the corporate world either. He, however, has only signed a few contracts with sponsors after winning the gold.
