Red Kuri SquashLocal season has started. From Durst Farm out of Yolo County

The smooth skin on this winter squash is difficult to peel, sohalve it, roast it (cut side down), and then scoop out the

creamy, yellowish flesh to add to casseroles or stews. Oncecooked, the nutty-tasting skin is tender enough to eat it, if

Sugar Pie PumpkinLocal season has started. From Durst Farm out of Yolo County

Petite and round, this pumpkin is widely found in marketswhen pumpkin pie season rolls around. It has bright orange

flesh and smooth skin and is especially sweet. Puree it to use inwaffles, muffins, pancakes, and of course, pies.

CITRUS - Lemons: The Desert crop has started, but their startup is slow and very light in volume. Limes: Quality is improvingoverall with less leaf shading (yellow color) showing up. New croplimes are being harvested and quality is 100% better. Oranges:Valencia crop is coming to an end. Limited supplies on 113ct and138ct. Quality is fair, which is typical for this time of the year after along summer. New crop on Navels have started this week.

AVOCADO - There was some harvest this weekend. Packinghouses are slowly packing and building up their volume to get itready for shippers to ship out. Expect to see the first of this packedfruit crossing into the US port by this upcoming Thursday. Expectto see HARD GREEN FRUITS and/or semi ripe. Please rememberthe supply pipeline is slowly filling the industry demand and it willbe a slow process to be able to full fill the entire supply chain,which that will take 2-3 weeks.

SQUASH - Supplies on Italian squash and yellow straight neck outof Santa Maria have remained steady. New fields have started in SanMaria. Quality and condition have improved from fair to good. Italianand yellow straight neck have now started in Arizona as well.

BERRIES- Blackberry: Northern California production continuesto wind down for the season but is being replaced by good volume onblackberries coming from Central Mexico. Blueberry: Supplies are stilllimited on the west coast. Raspberries: Supplies are increasing inavailability as production increase out of California’s southern growingdistricts and Central Mexico. Fruit has been nice with limited reports ofwet, leaky berries. Strawberries: Rain over the recent weekend isquickly affecting the supply and availability of fresh strawberries.

BRUSSELS SPROUTS - Quality has been excellent.

CAULIFLOWER- Cauliflower will transition to Yuma theweek of November 21st. Quality is really nice with little bruising.BROCCOLI- Will be transitioning to Yuma the week ofNovember 21st. Quality is still very good with minimal yellowing.

LETTUCE ROMAINE / ICEBERG / LEAF -Iceberg : Huron has begun production on this commodity. Salinascontinues production as normal. Yuma will begin at the end ofOctober. Last weekends rain followed by warm temperatures havecaused some quality issues, mildew being on the top of the list. Otherissues included lightweights, pinking and slight puffiness. Leaf : Yumaproduction is expected the first week in November. Mildew is likelygoing to be a factor with all leafy items as last weekends rain followedby warm temperatures have caused for some quality issues. Otherdefects such as insect damage, fringe and tip burn are all beingreported.

TOMATOES - California tomato season has come to an end dueto both demand and last weekend rain has caused growers to pick whatthey could before getting rained out. Demand exceeds supply for Grapetomatoes and prices will remain strong until Mexico can produceheavier volume closer to November.

BELL PEPPERS - Green bells out of Central Valley arewinding down in volume and will soon transition to SouthernCalifornia. Red bells out of Fresno are showing good quality and thesewill soon transition to Southern California as well. Yellow bells areshowing better availability with some quality issues.EGGPLANT - Quality and condition on eggplant has remainedgood coming out of Fresno. Minimal cosmetic issues. Production soonto start in the Coachella Valley with fresh crop.

GRAPES - Green grape: Quality has been strong and supply hasbeen constant. Expect price to spike by the weekend. Red grape :Quality has been strong and supply has been constant.

VEGETABLES / FRUITSVEGETABLES

CELERY - Quality has improved with little complaints ofyellowing or dehydration.

ONIONS - Light demand and good supplies keep the marketssteady on all size and color. Green Onions: Quality is good from alldistricts with no significant issues being reported.

CILANTRO - The market is steady with good supplies from alldistricts. Quality is reported as good from all regions.

MELONS - Watermelon: The current availability is improvingwith better sizing. Peaking on larger fruit with brix exceeding 10% .Cantaloupe and Honeydew: The desert started two weeks ago andsupplies are increasing. Quality is good in all areas.

ASPARAGUS - Weather is warming up just ahead of thepeak season in Baja and we are seeing good volume through theend of the month. No quality issues anticipated at this time.

POTATOES - Demand is light out of all growing areas: Idaho,Washington, Colorado and Wisconsin. Quality is reported as good.Market is currently steady out of all areas.

CUCUMBERS - Fair quality and condition on cucumberscoming out of Baja. Quality will be improved as we move forward.
