Our Story

How it started• Duncan Thorne came to Eggbuckland Community
College and asked for volunteers for an Eggbuckland Dreamscheme.
• Several volunteers turned up to Eggbuckland Church Hall for the very first meeting.
• We discussed the issues within the local area and decided to plan a Summer Fayre on Eggbuckland’s Frogmore field.

Residents Meeting
• After discussing the issues we attended a local residents meeting to see what the community wanted.
• At the meeting we brought up the idea of a summer fayre and the residents agreed with the idea.
• This was needed in the community to bring people together and for them to get to know each other.
• This was a great opportunity for us to explain to the community who we were and what we were trying to achieve.

Our first Summer Fayre
• We worked closely with the Youth Service, Local Councillors and Plymfed.
• These groups gave us guidance on how to organise a Summer Fayre and how it should be run.
• It was a small fayre however it was a great success for what we had done and it was our first big achievement.

Winter event
• In the winter we decided on running a Christmas fayre raising money for our local community and also money for our next event.
• Since this event was smaller than our summer event we were able to do more of the organisation.
• This was helpful so we learnt the key skills for organising an event so our next summer fayre would be more independent.

2nd Summer Fayre
• The last Summer Fayre was our best so far. We spent a large partof our money on renting a stage for our Fayre. This let us have a variety of acts to entertain the public throughout the day.
• We had a lot more stalls at the Fayre which generated over £1500 which we were able to spend on our next Summer Fayre to make it even better.

Winter Meal
• Last Christmas we wanted to raise the Christmas spirits by inviting a group of elderly people for a meal in our own Church Hall.
• We had a lot of positive feedback from the public that were invited. They are still talking about it now!
• This was a great way for the elderly people to talk to people which may not have the chance to meet new people.

Dreamscheme Conference
• Half of our group travelled to Taunton in February for the Dreamscheme Conference
• For some, the train journey was most exciting!• It was useful to see what other youth groups
were doing- some ideas have been politely stolen!

Car Boot Sale
• To further increase our budget for the 2013 Fayre, we organised a car-boot sale. This was popular with the community and we had 14 cars attend.
• It also allowed us to sell things and also make cakes to further increase the community fund.
• We raised £150

Working On...
• We are looking at making the car-boot sales regular within the community
• In less than 7 weeks, we will also be holding the third Summer Fayre
• This is by far the largest event so far• We have also worked with local councillors to
get a £40,000 play park into the field- this will be opened as part of the fayre.

Always learning
• We learn a lot after holding every event. • Publicity is something that we have been lacking,
so we will be spending £140 on a bus advert;
• We now also have a Facebook page, Twitter and Website
• We believe that branding is extremely important

What have we learnt?
• Lots and lots!• Tell the community what you’re doing- they
don’t want to be in the dark• Advertise well- you want people there!• Reward yourselves- our most difficult
decisions are which trips to go on!• Listen to people and consider every team
member
