EVS to Land | Overview

• What revised FAA regulation

allows equipped, trained,

authorized operator to do

• Flight testing to achieve FAA

system certification

• The “Fruit” - Operational Credit

• Crew training and proficiency

• Glimpse into the future

3

3

Past | 14CFR §91.175

• Since 2004: Allowed for descent below DA/DH or MDA down to 100 feet above TDZE

using Enhanced Flight Vision System (EFVS) in lieu of natural vision

14CFR §91.175 | Issues

• Regulation did not fully leverage

EFVS capability below 100’

• Regulation failed to offer

dispatch/continuance credit for

Air Carrier Operations

(91k/135/121)

• Regulation did not define

equipment requirements nor

contain provisions for product

improvement (better EFVS

technologies)

• Regulation did not address

training nor recent flight

experience requirements

5

• Permits EFVS operational credit below 100

HAT

• Permits air carrier dispatch/continuation credit

• Defines equipment requirements

• Defines equipment certification requirements

• Defines authorization requirements

• Defines training/proficiency requirements

New | FAA Advisory Circular 90 – 106A

6

New | 14CFR §91.176 (b)

• Allows for descent below DA/DH or MDA (excluding circling minimums) down to 100 feet

above TDZE using EFVS in lieu of natural vision

• From 100 feet above TDZE to landing, natural vision required

• Same language as §91.175 (l)

EFVS SEGMENT

7

New | 14CFR §91.176 (a)

• Allows for descent below DA/DH down to touchdown and rollout

using EFVS in lieu of natural vision (No less than 1000 feet RVR)

EVS-To-Land | EFVS Credit

“NEW” | 91.176(a) – Visual Cues and Touchdown Zone

• From DA/DH to 100’ above TDZE: “Any approach light system

or both runway threshold and touchdown zone” visible using

EFVS

• From 100’ to touchdown and rollout, one of the following must

be distinctly visible/identifiable using EFVS: runway

threshold/threshold lights, touchdown zone surface/lights or

markings of touchdown zone

EFVS Performance

What is Visual Advantage ?

The measured

difference between

the distance required

to see an object with

natural vision and

the distance required

to see that object

with the enhanced

vision provided by

an installed EFVS

sensor.
