EFT(Emotional Freedom Technique)Open to a new vision for how your life might be

    Summary

The way you think and feel affects all aspects of your life.

For some people, the way that they think and feel is an obviousissue, because they feel anxious, afraid, stressed and unhappy,

to such an extent that they cannot fail to notice the fact.

For some others, the problems of life are less obvious to pinpoint...

They imagine that the way they feel is normalbecause it is how they were brought up,

and so they never question the patterns in their lifewhich result in:

repeated poor health, repeated illness, repeated failure, lack of fulfilment in relationships, lack of finance,

limitations of intelligence, limitations in career progression, and a generalised feeling of ifonly,

as if there were a glass ceilingpreventing them achieving and obtaining more in life.

Wellthe contents of this booklet explain that whichever type of

person you feel yourself to be, a technique, called EFT (EmotionalFreedom Technique) can help you get more from life.

And the good news is that it is so easy to learn thata twelve year old can be taught the basics in a matter of minutes,

yet is sophisticated enough that you could spend a lifetimelearning its subtleties and studying it underlying science.

Note: See end of document for contact detailsif you are interested in an EFT consultation or therapy session.

INTRODUCTIONA FEW OPENING WORDSEFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is a form of Psychology.

Over the course of last decade, many thousands of people havefound that, by using EFT, they have found release from years offrustration, anxiety, fear, phobias, negative thinking, and a widevariety of medical problems. And, often this relief has been

generated within minutes or hours, as opposed the months andyears that are associated with traditional, talk based therapy.

Hence the reason that EFT is gaining so much popularly around theworld.

In addition, if you imagine that some of your underlying beliefs andattitudes might be limiting your success and your happiness in life:from your expectations to do with money and finance, to yourexpectations that you might find happiness with friends, family or apartner, then you will be pleased to hear that EFT can also be usedto powerfully and effectively to broaden your perspective.

So: Pretty much everyone on Planet Earth will find something aboutEFT that can benefit themThis is from the most extreme phobicor depressive person; to an entrepreneur, who is so anxious aboutbusiness growth that they dither and miss an opportunity; to asports personality, who lets a bout of nerves disrupt the flow of theirperformance and misses Gold by a fraction of a second.

And the further good news is that EFT is so simple that the basicscan be taught to a child in a matter of minutes, yet is so flexible thatyou can spend a lifetime exploring its subtleties and its morerefined applications.

ETF is great for getting rid of unwanted negative emotions.Obviously, if a big life event occurs it is natural to respond emotionally to that event, but

with EFT you have the choice as to when to let the emotion go.

EFT is also great for getting rid of attitudes and self imposed limitations

on success, which often sabotage our progress in life.

Now. If you have access to the web, you might like to check out thefollowing five minute video based introduction to the field of EFT athttp://www.emofree.com/splash/EFT_video.asp.

But before you do so, one word of caution

During the video that we have referenced and during the text thatfollows, you will read about a number of ideas and read a numberof jargon terms, which might confuse you. For example, terms likeEnergy Psychology, Meridians, Acupointsand the like.

For some people these terms are now common-place, but forothers, they are less so.

Therefore, be assured that any confusion that does arise is liable tobe due to the many poorly researched and poorly explainedpresentations in the media on these subjects. And be assured thatin the pages that follow, we explain all of these terms, and more, from a clear scientific perspective.

Despite what you may have been led to believe, talk of EnergyPsychology, Meridians and Acupoints is all very well-founded.

SoWith the preceding caution in mind, this booklet begins with areview of the ideas and theories which underpin EnergyPsychology, which is the wider scientific field, of which EFT is apart.

There is then a brief summary of the background to the field.

Finally, there are some hints on getting started.

Plus there is a reference to the web page, from which you candownload the full EFT Manual and purchase training videos, shouldyou want to know more.

    OK?!?... :o))

If you have not already done so, now would be a good time to

review the video, suggested above. Then progress onto SectionOneOr, if you already know about the scientific basis for EnergyPsychology, jump straight on to Section Two

Be assured that by the end of this booklet you will wonder why the media portray talk ofEnergy Psychology and Meridians as being controversial.

As we will discover, in China, use of energy approaches to Medicine and to Psychologyare taken for granted, and many doctors routinely train to a high standard in both

systems, before being allowed to practice.

SECTION ONE:BACKGROUNDENERGY PSYCHOLOGYTo understand EFT, it is helpful to be aware of a relatively newapproach to psychology, called Energy Psychology, because this

is the wider field of which EFT is a part.

    Energy Psychology

involves using a variety of simple to learn techniques to changethe way in which people think and feel, which might involve peoplefeeling more motivatedtowards those things that they desire, orfeeling less anxiousabout issues which routinely upset them.

Overall, energy psychology works by helping people to learn how tomake changes to the various energy fieldssaid to exist around thehuman bodyand so, the next few pages explain what we mean bythe phrase energy fieldbeginning with a description of thosekinds of fields which are now well accepted, before then heading

out to provide an overview of others, which are more hotly debated.

Later, we will explain how EFT sits comfortably within a section ofthe field of Energy Psychology, with which most people should feelcomfortable. An aspect of the field which is conventional enoughthat NICE (the UK National Institute for Clinical Excellence) feelconfident enough to issue guidelines to NHS Trusts. And indeedfeel confident enough to undertake trials, which in the next fewyears may see the techniques associated with EFT rolled outacross the UK National Health Service.

Two books which provide non technical access to the fields of Energy Medicine andEnergy Psychology. As you can see from the titles, it is not just the domain of

psychology which is being forced to consider new treatments based on altering theenergy fields which surround and suffuse the human body.

    ENERGY FIELDS

Leave behind any media led-imagesassociated with Energy Psychology

because one of the problems which is faced by the field ofEnergy Psychology is that, when it comes to the notion of a field of

energy surrounding and suffusing the human body, many peoplehave been inoculated against taking the idea seriously due toexposure to TV spoof series, such as Charmed. It is thereforedifficult to discuss the notion without people giggling as they elicitmental images of old ladies gazing into a crystal ball.

This only happens in the West. In the East, for example in China, the notion of Energy Fields is totally integrated into the fabric of theculture and into the National Health System. Similarly, even in theold Soviet Union, research into practical application of energy fieldswas the biggest national spend after the Space Race and themoney spent on the nuclear weapons program.

Recalling that Communism is a Materialistic philosophy, the stancetaken by both Communist China and Communist Russia indicatesthe degree that around a third of the worlds take the reality and thepractical application of energy fields around the human body veryseriouslydoing so from a hard nosed scientific standpoint.

To take the example of China, the Chinese view of EnergyPsychology and Energy Medicine is rooted in disciplines whichhave been gathering empirical evidence for many thousands ofyears. These include modern research articles containing seriousscientific research, some of which we summarise in later pages.

While in the Soviet Union, the phenomenon was often given tomulti-disciplinary teams of engineers, doctors and psychologists,

    who then created working technologies.

Sowith the preceding preamble in mind, in the pages whichfollow, we describe and discuss a representative sample of theresearch into the energy fields which surround and suffuse thehuman body. As we do so, key themes to note are: first, thathuman and mammalian physiology is hugely influenced by variousfields of energy, surrounding and suffusing the physical body, andsecond that by altering fields of energy around a body, you canalter both physiological and psychological processes, and alsobehaviour, attitudes and even personality.

The media portrayal of energy fields is that of Whacky Witchesand offbeat New Agers, such as the sisters from Charmed, and dropped out hippies, such as Neil from the Young Ones

,...but the reality is very different

In China you find highly trained staff, holding both scientific and traditional medicalqualifications. While in the former Soviet Union, you find teams of researchers

undertaking military sponsored science to develop working technologies.

Robert O Beckerand the electro magnetic field around the human body

We begin our description of the energy fields which surround andsuffuse the human body with Professor Robert O Beckers twiceNobel nominated work, using electro-magnetism. Specifically, hisacclaimed work to regenerate skin tissue and his work critiquing thephysical and psychological effects of various radio and radar

systems on the human mind and body. For those outside of the field of Physiology, the impact of Beckerswork might be rather better known in regard to the advent ofvarious medical devices used to help treat sports injuriesand inparticular, for the device used to help David Beckham get over afoot injury, so that he could play in the 2002 Football World Cup.

Beckhams injury brought to media attention that there are now asteadily growing number of medical technologies which utiliseelectro-magnetism to speed up the growth of healthy cells, forexample after physical trauma. And there are also plans for devicesdesigned to suppress the growth of cells which are malignant, such

as cancers. From the perspective of medicine, Beckers work is interestingbecause a key theme of his research is that it is possible to mapthe electrical potential of various points on a healthy human body,in terms of volts. This is important because once you have mappedthe electrical gradient between different parts of the human body, you can calculate the flow of current. And, given that all electricalcurrent generates a magnetic field, it is possible to conceive of ahealthy human as someone, who is surrounded by a magnetic fieldof a specific size and strength. Indeed, these kinds of calculationsare a matter of simple physics.

From the perspective of psychology, once you have a model ofwhat a healthy human bio-magnetic field would look like, you canthen begin to notice how a variety of physical and emotionalproblems occur as a distortion in that fieldAnd this is indeed thethesis of Dr Leonard Ravitz, who has spent decades noting howvarious psychiatric disorders are affected by changes in electricalpotential. The realistic conclusion of all this being that giventechniques and technologies which bring the human bio-magneticfield back into equilibrium, many physical and psychologicalproblems will disappear.

Medical devices that use electro-magnetism to speed healingare now trusted well enough to be used by therapists working with top sports

personalities, such as the coach who was responsible to get David Beckham match fitfor the Korean Football World Cup in 2002.

Two books by credible academics, which explain decades of researchinto the physical and psychological effects of changes

in the electromagnetic fields surrounding and suffusing the human body

Once one realises that many personal physical and psychologicalissues occur at the level of a distortion in the electromagnetic fieldaround an individual, it then follows that in order to facilitate health,it is helpful to get that field back into equilibrium. And this is,indeed, the goal of Energy Psychology.

The good news is that you can often alter the electromagnetic fieldof an individual as quickly as you can switch on the electric current

that powers a light. The further good news being that once achange is made, and a new energy field is established, medical andpsychological problems often quickly disappear. For example, youcan alter the energy field associated with unwanted thoughts, feelings and emotionsand once that field disappears, anindividual will have to work hard to re-establish that negative field.

It appears that much of our psychology and physiology is derivedfrom the fields around us, which makes sense from the perspectiveof Quantum Physics, because according to Quantum Physicists, allmatter is ultimately a shimmering field of energy, hanging in emptyspacediscussion of which will presented in a few pages time.

For now, all that it is important to note is that when one part of anelectromagnetic field is altered, all other parts are affected at thesame timeThus, it is very easy to enter into a virtuous cycle, withenergy balances producing a positive impact on many aspects ofhealth and happiness beyond that originally envisaged.

For example, in medicine, there are emerging theories for howelectromagnetic fields affect the physical structure of various partsof the body. For instance, it is well worth reading about theintriguing work by cellular biologist, Dr Brice Lipton.

Lipton shows how environmental effects, such as bio magneticfields, are responsible for the ways in which cells interpret DNA. In

psychology, this is important because our experience of emotionderives from chemicals produced in the cells of our body. If ourcells begin to interpret DNA differently, then we will producedifferent chemicals and literally become a new person.

Or as another example, the work associated with heartmath.orgexplores how the electromagnetic field around the heart influencesthoughts and feelingthe research by heartmath contributing to awider body of work, which now models human consciousness asdistributed throughout the body, and not just located within thebrain and in the central nervous system.

Left: Physicists using a SQID to map the electro magnetic fields around the brain andheartmath.org, who map the electromagnetic fields around the human heart, and thenexplore the impact of said fields on human psychology.

We tred into slightly more controversial territorywith an overview of Kirlian Photography

which was a spin-off technology from Soviet Military research intothe energy fields around the human body, and which wasdeveloped by Semyon Davidovich Kirlian in the 1950s.

Kirlian cameras generate an electrical discharge into an object, which is then photographed, giving the perspective of an aura

around whatever is being filmed. As one might expect, there is ahot debate over whenever the final photograph is a result of aphotograph of a real energy field or simply the corona generatedby the process of using static electricity to take the photograph inthe first place.

However, in many ways this debate is as empty as debatingwhether an MRI scanner is photographing a real image or onegenerated by a discharge in order to take the photo. The importantissue is what a researcher can glean by looking at the final picture.

For example, one interesting observation is that doctors can takeKirlian photographs beforeand afteran individual undergoes

various medical and psychological treatments and they can thensee if the apparent discharge and the apparent energy field aroundthe photographed body has increased or decreased in strength, orif it has come into focus or has become relatively blurred.

Indeed, it was Kirlians own serious illnesses which first alerted himto the potential of his camera to diagnosing physical problems.Kirlian noticed that on days when he tried to calibrate his machineand he felt well, he got entirely different pictures to days on whichhe tried to calibrate his machine and felt ill.

As a result of Kirlians initial work, Kirlian photography became amuch talked about topic within the former Soviet Union, withluminaries, such as Dr SM Pavlenko, Chairman of the First MoscowMedical Institute reporting that Kirlian photography can be used forthe early diagnosis of disease, especially cancer.

However, Kirlian then fell foul of bureaucracy and it was not until acouple of decades later that more widespread official researchbegan to be conducted. For cultural reasons, in the West, thephotography has always attracted interest from the New Agemovement and has thus tended to cause career scientists to becautious. Though, fortunately, this attitude is now changing

    A visit to the fringe

Michael Persinger: According to wikipedia, Persinger establishedand now runs the Behavioural Neuroscience Program at LaurentianUniversity in Sudbury, Ontario. This is a unit which has pioneeredthe integration of chemistry, biology and psychology.

In Ontario, Persinger has spent many years fitting people into amodified motorcycle crash helmet, in which is embedded a number

of electro magnets. He has then noted how changes to theelectromagnet field produced by the helmet affects the internalworkings of the human mind and brainand in particular, howcertain settings generate specific emotions and hallucinations.

Persingers findings, along with those of others engaged in similarresearch, have led to a proposal referred to as the ElectromagneticTheory of Consciousness. This is a theory which, if true, shatterspretty much all of our previous models of Mind. In this theory,Consciousness is derived from the electromagnetic fields aroundthe body and the Brian is pretty much relegated to the role of aradio, picking up on the thoughts and feelings that we experience.

Maurice Cotterell: Maurice Cotterell was a radio engineer whonoticed that his equipment suffered from periodic interference, which he traced to the effects of electromagnetic radiation from theSun, interacting with the magnetic field around the Earth. The mostobvious of these effects being the Northern Lights.

Cotterell then wondered if the fluctuations in the Earthselectromagnetic field, due to its interaction with the Sunselectromagnetic field, might also affect humans. He then gatheredquite a significant body of data to suggest that it didwhich hepopularised under the name Astrogeneticsannoying bothmainstream scientists and astrologers alike.

The name, Astrogenetics, derives from the fact that the Sun haseight magnetic poles and so is in possession of a field ofelectromagnetic radiation, which is in constant state of flux,Intriguingly, the periods of the flux can be seen to correspond tothose same periods of time, as designated by the signs of theZodiac. Even more intriguingly, Cotterell found that individuals bornunder linked astrological star signs did indeed have identifiabletraits. He then theorised that this was because they had beenconceived under a very different electromagnetic field to thosebirthed at other times of the year.

The solar wind from the sun contains radiation, which interactswith the Van Allen Belt, causing periodic changes in the Earths magnetic field...

The most impressive and obvious of the phenomena that arise from the interaction ofthe energy fields of the Sun and he Earth is the Northern Lights

Getting controversial,we need to discuss the Chinese concept of Chiand the associated system of energy Meridians

.which goes beyond the notion of an electromagnetic field ofenergy, and posits the existence of a field of a subtle energy of anature which modern science has yet to determine.

The phrase yet to determine might appear odd, but many modern

commentators liken the current state of scientific knowledge relatedto the existence of a subtle energy field around the human body tothe state of the scientific theories related to electricity a couple ofhundred years ago.

Back in the mid-Nineteenth Century, researchers noted manyphenomena, which we would now associate with electricity, butlacked an overall coherent framework in which to understand thosephenomena, and of course also lacked a way to measure eitherelectricity or magnetism.

Indeed, as today, there were many critics who decried the earlyresearch into electromagnetism as charlatanry.

Butputting controversy to one side, the Chinese posit a system oftwelve lines of energy, each line being called a Meridian, thoughwhich Chi(subtle) energy is said to flow. They also posit thatmany, if not all, physical and psychological problems in the bodystem from an imbalance in the f low of Chi energy.

An imbalance is said to occur, where Chi energy either builds up oris lacking in a specific Meridian. When such an imbalance occurs, then organs associated with a particular Meridian become affectedby changes in the size and strength of the energy field associatedwith the Meridian.

Thus, in many ways, we can see talk of a Meridian as being an

extension and a sophistication of our previous discussion withregard electromagnetism. Indeed, Chi energy may one day bedetermined to be a form of electromagnetism.

But whatever ones attitude to subtle energies, what cannot bedenied is that, as far back as the 1960s, hard scientific evidencehas been found to underpin the Chinese model of well-being, whichis why it is closely integrated into the Chinese system of nationalhealth.

The Chinese system of main Meridians

For example, a harmless radioactive marker dye injected into apoint on a Meridian, called an acupoint, spreads throughout thebody. Mapping the path taken by the marker dye indicates a seriesof tubules which exactly follow the line of each Meridian, asdescribed in classical Oriental literature. The size of the tubulesalong which the dye flows being 0.5 microns in diameter.

Further research indicates that there are indeed three systems of

ducts, which convey important chemical signals and markers directto specific cells in various parts of the body. It is therefore entirelyplausible that the health and efficiency of the grid of meridians hasan impact on the physical and psychological well-being of anindividual.

Additional research indicates that the electrical potential of acu-points differs from that of other points of contact on the skin of ananimal. Thus, we find that there is an explicit link between thedirection and structure of the Meridian system and the direction andstructure of the electro-magnetic field around a human body.

Finally, it appears that after fertilisation, the Meridian system is one

of the first networks to emerge, with blood and lymph systemsgrowing along the network, already generated by the Meridians, asif the Meridians were a form of organic scaffolding.

This supports the theory that the Meridians are indeed a physicalstructure which is intimately linked to the physical andpsychological well-being of an individual, and which is alsointimately linked to the size, strength and shape of the electro-magnetic field around said individual.

Thus, whether one believes in the concept of Chi or not, theMeridian system is clearly important to both physical aspects ofhealth and also to relating physical aspects of the body to theelectromagnetic field(s) around the human body.

In short, Meridians provide an on going structural blueprint for theway in which the body develops and regulates itself on a year byyear basis, as well as providing an important system of ductsthrough which chemical messages reach into the cellular level ofkey life processes.

All of which is important because EFT uses simple-to-learntechniques to directly affect the Meridians. Thus once youunderstand the ideas described on this page, you can begin tounderstand why EFT might be worth learning.

In China, schools for traditional medicine sit side by side with prestigious scientificresearch institutes. And many medical practitioners are expected to complete bothWesternised and Traditional forms of training before they are allowed to practise,

making their training programme far longer and more extensive than those ofEurope and the USA

With regard the number of scientists who take the notion of Chi seriously,it is worth noting that 40% of state funded medicine in China is rooted in disciplines

which accept the notion of Chi,and 95% of western medical hospitals in China have fully fledged

and funded Chinese medicine wards and out patients departments.

Remember that Communism is a Materialistic philosophy and so, if anything, the notion of Chi and the philosophies associated with Chi fly in the face of official

dogma. That the integration of Chi-based medicine is allowed to be practised at all is atestimony to thousands of years of case study based investigations and experience by

    millions of practitioners.

The Indian notion of centres of energy, called Chakras, andtheir associated system of energy pathways, called Nadis

represent the final form of energy field that we will describe anddiscuss in this document.

The Chakras and the Nadis further extend our model of the energyfields that surround the human bodyand again focus on a form ofenergy that is currently controversialin the same way as thenotion of Chi energy is controversial, as discussed in the precedingsection.

A five minute explanation of the Chakras would be that theyrepresent seven major centres of energy exchange within the body. Those centres being at the: crown, brow, throat, heart, solar plexus, abdomen and base of the spinewith each centre exchangingenergy of a different quality, in that the energy associated with eachchakra has a different effect on the health and well-being of thehuman mind and the human body.

The Nadis function a little like the Meridian system in Chinesemedicine, except that instead of being associated with blood

vessels, they are more closely associated with the Central NervousSystem and also with the Endocrine Glands, which directly impacton the emotional life of an individual.

With regard scientific evidence, researchers, such as HiroshiMotoyama of Japan, have used conventional technology tomeasure the energy field around the chakras of people undertakingmeditation. There is indeed a measurable energy vortex around thelocation where chakras are said to exist. Also, people visualising anexchange of subtle energy via their chakras can alter the size andstrength of that vortex.

All of which does not prove the existence of an, as yet, unknown

and un-measurable subtle energy, but does support the theory thatthe Chakras are an important component of the energy body of ahealth human being.

And, for anyone wishing to take a study of the possibilities further,we would recommend books by the Western-trained Indian doctor,Deepak Chopra, who has spent decades explaining andpopularising forms of Indian medicine in Europe and the USA.

There are seven major chakras and many minor ones, each associated with a particular function and with a specific colour.

Finally, we finish up with a short philosophical discussion withregard how and why the more controversial aspects of EnergyPsychology work

As you might expect, in a world population of nine billion, there aremore than a few respected scientists who are following up on theideas and theories presented on the preceding pages.

And in many cases the results are far different than one might

expect, given the stories reported in the mainstream media. But, for many people, the real surprise is that the most likelyresearchers to embrace notions of subtle and etheric energy arePhysicists. These being the very people whom one would expect todecry the notion.

The reason for this surprise is that most school-based Physicstextbooks focus on Physics as it was a couple of hundred yearsago. And also because, at the beginning of the Twentieth Century, many fields of academic endeavour tried to define their forms ofexperimentation in line with Physics, as it was a hundred years ago,in order to appear more reputable and in order to appear more

scientific, when it came to applying for funds. The irony is that as subjects, like Psychology, tried to redefinethemselves to look like serious subjects, like Physics, which dealwith hard facts and measurable natural phenomena, mostPhysicists began to realise that trying to measure and defineeverything in the natural world is simply just not possible.

The Age of Relativity and the Age of Quantum Physics hasrelegated the Natural World to one of un-measurable forms andenergies, forms and energies which we can only dimly understand.

And while our modern grasp of the Natural World has given usmany amazing technologies, there is an increasing amount of that

technology which relies upon theories which are poorly understood. For example, a Physicist cannot even give you a plausibleexplanation for why the force of gravity keeps you pinned to theEarth, why your Polaroid glasses filter sunlight effectively, or howthe packets of energy, spinning in space, which we perceive to besolid matter, can pop in and out of existence, in a seeminglyrandom manner.

In short, Physicists see the world as a mysterious place

It was once believed that atoms were the smallest unit of material, and thus, like the atoms in this picture, the world could be neatly described.

Then it was discovered that every atom is comprisedof smaller packets of energy, each orbiting

one another. And inside each packet, is a series of smaller particles,

again each made up of packets of energy orbiting within an empty void.Suddenly, the world became fluid and ephemeral.

  • 7/31/2019 Eft Explained

    15/26

EFT Explained - Page 15 - Copyright Dr Peter EH Smee, circle-of-excellence.com, 2008

Thus, in the space of the last few decades, Physicists have becomevery open to the notion of esoteric energies, and in fact one of theHoly Grails in modern physics is to tap into the Zero Point energywhich is believed to suffuse the fabric of t ime and space in whichwe exist.

Zero Point Energy is an energy that is so powerful that it is believedto make a nuclear reaction look like a candle by comparison. Yet,

despite the mathematical certainty that such an energy must exist,no one has yet seen it, sensed it, or measured itall of whichmakes notions of the subtle energies associated with Chi and withthe Chakras look relatively pedestrian by comparison.

Yet it is a central tenet of modern Physics that Zero Point Energymust exist, if the very fabric of time and space is to be kept inbalance.

This is because while we see our world as full of hard and solidobjects, to a Physicist, the world is almost totally vacuum, filled withsome spinning packets of energy, which feel solid because theykeep bumping into one another and bouncing back from oneanother.

Given this model of the world around us, with packets of energy, spinning endlessly and also emitting energy waves of their own, which help keep the spin of each packet reliable and predictable, itwould be extremely surprising if any physical form, and certainlyany living physical form, were not surrounded and suffused withvarious fields of energy.

If we all consist of billions of interacting packets of energy, withinteracting fields of influence, then almost by definition a living bodywould have an energy field associated with it. And if a healthy livingbody can be expected to have a field of an expected shape, sizeand strength, it then becomes self evident that a distorted field

would be associated with a less than optimal state of health. It then becomes self evident that a technique or technology that canget a distorted field back into balance and back into equilibriumshould be expected to have many positive effects on both thephysical and psychological well being of an individual.

Looked at from this perspective, it is strange that more money isnot invested exploring the potential of Energy Psychology andEnergy Medicinethough this is probably because of the Charmedphenomenon that was mentioned earlier.

As we mentioned earlier, in the West, too many people watchtoo much media and as a result associate energy fields with

Whacky Witchesand with fringe spiritual beliefs.

    SECTION TWO:HISTORYTHE ORIGINS OF EFT(ADAPTED FROM EFTSUPPORT.COM)Pre-History

The origins of EFT extend back many millennia. There are originaldocuments in Chinese museums, which describe the earlyexperimentation with the Meridian system as a way in which topromote health and wellbeing, and which are reputed to be 5000thousand years old.

According to the documentation, it appears that early Chinesemedical practitioners began to make systematic use of our naturalhuman tendency to touch and to rub specific spots on our bodies, inorder to soothe and heal ourselves. For example, you may havenoticed that, when stressed, many people naturally hold theirforehead, or that, when anxious, many people naturally cover theregion of their heart or their solar plexus. All spots where energy isreputed to be concentrated, as discussed in the preceding section.

It was a natural extension for early acupuncturists to use needles toenergise the meridians, in order to treat a variety of physicalproblems. However, as far as we know, the originators of thisancient healing practice did not go on to develop their art as a wayof using acupuncture in order to treat emotional or psychologicalproblem, per se, but mostly focused on the physical body.

Acupuncture originated in China over five thousand years ago.The World Health Organization of the United Nations (WHO)has cited 104 different conditions that acupuncture can treat.

From Applied Kinesiology to Thought Field Therapy

In the mid-twentieth century, a well known chiropractor, called Dr.George Goodheart, created a diagnostic process called MuscleTesting. Muscle Testing is a precise method for testing the bodyfor information about its own needs: structural, physical, nutritional, emotional and even spiritual. Goodheart then went on to evolve hisMuscle Testing procedures into a world wide approach to health

provision, called Applied Kinesiology, which is used by many tensof thousands of qualified health professionals, around the world.

Given recent media comment about Muscle Testing, it is worthnoting that to learn Applied Kinesiology; one has to already be alicensed medical practitioner of some kind. It is also worth notingthat there is a rigorous application process in order to obtaintraining and to be accepted into the world-wide community ofpractitioners and researchers. Finally, there is an ongoing andvibrant research community seeking to extend the techniques. Thus, despite some recent negative publicity, the methodsassociated with Applied Kinesiology have solid empirical and casestudy evidence backing them up.

To continue with the story, early in the development of AppliedKinesiology, Goodheart learned about acupuncture from reading aninteresting text written by the president of the Acupuncture Societyin Britain. He then became intrigued with the possibilities and wenton to introduce acupuncture into Applied Kinesiology, but withoutthe needles. In place of needles, Goodheart found that rubbing ortapping acupoints worked just as welland was more culturallyacceptable in the West.

In the 1970s, an Australian psychiatrist, called John Diamond, tookthe basic tenets of Goodheart and modified them to suit his workwith people with emotional difficulties. He then called his new

technique Behavioral Kinesiology. Most interesting to us is thatDiamond found that rubbing certain acupoints and repeating certainaffirmations had a positive effect on many of his clients.

Then, in the 1980's, an American psychologist, called Dr. RogerCallahan, created a protocol for tapping on acupoints, whilstfocusing on a fear or an emotional issue. Such was his immediatesuccess that his technique, now referred to as TFT (Thought FieldTherapy), soon attracted many famous advocates, such as thehypnotist and therapist Paul McKenna.

TFT was presented as one of the techniques recommendedby Paul McKenna in his TV series, I Can Make You Thin.

    EFT simplifies TFT

There is no doubt that TFT was a revolutionary way in which toconduct psychology and psychotherapy. Clients could almostguarantee an immediate effect. When you consider that traditional,talk-based therapy can take years to generate any kind of impacton a psychological issue or problem, the fact that TFT would oftenyield results in a matter of minutes or hours was very attractive.

However, there was a problemTFT involves muscle testing and muscle testing for the appropriatepoints on which tap is not only cumbersome but must be done bysomeone expert in muscle testing, which limits its use as a self-helptechnique. In addition, a number of commentators felt thatCallahans process was often overly complicated and convoluted.

Some simplification as therefore in order

In the late 1980s, an Engineer and Personal Performance Coach, called Gary Craig paid to learn and to license TFT. He thensimplified it and released his new version to the world as EFT(Emotional Freedom Technique). Unlike almost every other

developer of a psychological technique in the world, Craig wasalready a self made millionaire, and so he released his techniquefor free. Thus, with CDs and manuals that are free to copy on toothers, the technique has become popular all around the world.

While scientific validation of EFT has lagged behind clinical reportson the its effectiveness. It is now safe to say that thousands ofdocumented reports on the efficacy of EFT now exist, many ofwhich can be accessed through Gary Craigs website. And becausesomeone only needs to pay to learn the technique, if they wished tobecome a licensed therapist. And because the technique is easy tolearn from a manual or from a CD, it has become increasingly

popular around the world.Intriguingly, like the games of Chess and Backgammon, EFT canbe learned by a child, but one can then spend many decadesbecoming ever more proficient and insightful in its application.

As we will discover in the next section, all one needs to do in orderto use EFT is to think of a problem or situation which upsets you,and then tap a dozen or so meridian points in order, and in mostcases the emotion of feeling upset, or anxious or agitated will fadeand become ever more difficult to recall.

EFT recognizes that many emotional issues are powered by energythat is somehow held within the energy systemwhich surrounds and suffuses the human body.

By tapping the ends of the main Meridians, the kinetic energy of the tappingdisrupts the emotional energy of the emotion, which then quickly dissipates.

SECTION THREE:TECHNIQUESGETTING STARTED(ADAPTED FROM THE FREE EFT MANUAL, FROM EMOFREE.COM)

    Overview

As stated previously, EFT is simple enough to teach the basics to atwelve year old in a few minutes, and yet is sophisticated enoughfor you to spend a lifetime exploring all the potential applications.

The pages which follow outline the main processes, associated withEFT. However, you are encouraged to seek out more specificadvice on how to apply those processes, if you have some specificapplications in mind. For example, if you have a certainpsychological issue, or you have a definite physical illness that youwant to explore, or you feel that with some specific help you couldget a little more success from life.

Sowatch the video, referenced aboveread and work through

the instructionshave a goand see what happens. As you might expect, it is best to start with some issues that arerelatively innocuous, until the process becomes relativelyautomated in your mind. Then perhaps get together with a friendand take it in turns to lead one another through the process, because there certainly seems to be a magnified effect, where twoor more people are working together on an issue.

While you can work solo, working with other people can certainly raise the power of the effect

And of course, working with a trained practitioner means you can let someone else helpyou to generate insights and useful intuitions

    Step Zero: Focus and Rating

Before we begin to use any of the EFT techniques, we need to dotwo things. First, we need to focus in on the issue or experiencewhich we want to clear. Then, we need to rate how we feel aboutthat issue or experience on a scale of 1 to 10.

Now would be a good time to think of something, so that you caniteratively work through this text. However, please note that it is

probably best to keep that something relatively low-key, for themoment, and especially if you re working by yourself.

This is partly because you dont want to bring to mind somethingthat will stop you following the instructions. It is also because totackle any emotion that is relatively powerful, it is often beneficial towork with a friend, so that your friend can keep you on track, if youremotions should overflow, at anytime.

Examples of common issues which should mix strong emotions, butyet not present an over powering experience, include: attitudes andfrustrations with kids or partners, anxieties about money, stress atwork, habits that you would like to break, compulsive attraction to

certain foods, feeling blocked in your career, feeling anxious abouthow other people perceive youand the like.

We are now on our way to having our focus. The next thing to do isto recall a specific instance in which you felt or expect to feel theemotion on which you want to work. This helps you to really tap intoand magnify the negative attitudes and feelings, which have beenaffecting you. Ideally, you can conjure a mental movie of a timewhen you felt the emotion.

Finally, rate the strength of your feeling and your emotion on ascale of one to ten. You need to do this so that, later, you can trackthe degree to which you are improving. Your rating does not haveto be exact. Think of it as just a quick guide to ensure that, as we

progress through the instructions which follow, you are heading in adesired direction.

Alternatively, if you want a relatively innocuous test case on whichto practice, do the following. Take a deep breath and becomeaware of how full your lungs are. Become aware of the point atwhich muscle tension in your abdomen, ribs, shoulders, backand/or neck stop you from increasing the depth of your breath. Now, imagine how full your lungs might become if they could fullyinflate. Finally, rate your current lung capacity on a scale of one toten.

Know what you are aiming to achieveand focus on one target at a time

Make your monsters vivid in your minds eye

    21/26

EFT Explained - Page 21 - Copyright Dr Peter EH Smee, circle-of-excellence.com, 2008

    Step One: The Set Up

The Setup involves you tapping on a specific acupoint, whilst at thesame time repeating an affirmation. Our next task is therefore to getyou to generate an affirmation.

The affirmation that we create should be one that mixes adescription of the problem that you face with the notion that youlove and accept yourself. However, if words like loveand acceptsound too strong for you to utter, then you can customise thephrasing with words, to tone down what you say.

Sothe template for what you say should look like

Even though I have this _____________,I deeply and completely love and accept myself.

Andsome examples of phrasing you might use might include

**Even though I have this fear of public speaking,I deeply and completely love and accept myself.

**Even though I have this headache,I deeply and completely love and accept myself.

**Even though I have this anger towards my father,I deeply and completely love and accept myself.

**Even though I have this war memory,I deeply and completely love and accept myself.

**Even though I have this stiffness in my neck,I deeply and completely love and accept myself.

**Even though I have these nightmares,I deeply and completely love and accept myself.

**Even though I have this craving for alcohol,I deeply and completely love and accept myself.

**Even though I have this fear of snakes,

I deeply and completely love and accept myself.

**Even though I have this depression,I deeply and completely love and accept myself.

If you have used the template provided, you should now have anaffirmation which sets a description of the problem that you aredealing with, within a context in which you can feel good, irrespective of what happens in the next few minutes, hour, days, weeks or months :o))

Now. This is where we enter into slightly murky water, as differenttrainers teach students to tap slightly different points, whilst repeatingthe affirmation. However, the end result is the same and so does notmatter. For our purposes, we will make use of a point, called theKarate Choppoint, which is located on the side of the hand. (Either

    hand will do).

    Image downloaded from http://mettacenter.com

Some people like to use a point located near to the chest, but clearlythis becomes problematic, when therapists are working with clientsfrom a different gender. Hence, in recent years, the Karate Chop pointhas been felt to be more seemly and discreteand is just as effective.

We are now ready to begin. And beginning is as simple as tapping theKarate Chop point on one hand, whilst stating your affirmation threetimes.

The only thing to be aware of, whilst tapping, is that it is helpful toengage with your emotions. So really get into visualising the focusproblem and really get into expressing a feeling of even thoughIreally love and accept myself

Keep in mind we are dealing with emotions here, and you can onlydrain negative emotions to the extent that you engage with the processof EFT on an emotional level.

Alternatively, If you are continuing with our example related to depth ofbreathyou might say something like, Even though I can feel muscletension in my ribs and shoulders preventing me from breathing asdeeply as I might, I still love and accept myself

    Step Two: The Sequence

This is where we begin to reap the benefits of our earlierdiscussions related to energy fields and Energy Psychology.

We are going to tap a sequence of acupoints on the face and bodyand hands. These acupoints represent the ends of the Meridiansystem, as described by Chinese Medicine.

It transpires that much of the emotion that we feel and experience

is encoded into the Meridian system, from whence it gets encodedinto the energy field around us. The kinetic energy that results fromtapping each meridian appears to serve to dissipate the strength ofthe energy field associated with a memory. It thus dissipates thestrength of the emotions associated with the situation that upsetsus.

Nowwe need to do two things at onewhich first time round maybe challengingbut you will soon find the process of EFT tappingboth easy and straightforward. First, you need to keep in mind theproblem or issue. Many people do this may repeating a key word orphrase that keeps an image or a memory in mind.

For example, if your breathing is constricted by muscles in yourback you might say words like constrictiontightnessshallowbreathtightbackwhilst vividly recalling what tightness in themuscles feels like. Or as another example, imagine that you oftenget irate with a teenager at home. You might use phrasing like:arghhhh.they always xxxxlack of respectselfishnessandthe likewhilst vividly recalling and imagining a particularly baddisplay of behaviour.and your own emotional response.

Second, we begin to tap points on the face in the order displayedon the picture on the right, and as also demonstrated on the videoclip that we watched previously.

Begin by tapping the top of the head, then move steadilydownwards, which on the diagram corresponds to: (1) TH (TheHead), (2) EB (Eye Brow), (3) SE (Side Eye), (4) UE (Under Eye),(5) UN (Under Nose), and (6) CH (Chin).

It does not matter which side you tap! Just as long as you tap andkeep in mind the mental image that conjures the emotion or theexperience with which you want to deal. Now move down to theBody and tap the two points labeled CB (at the Clavicle, at the verytop of your breast bone, where you have a natural triangle ofbones) and UA (Under Arm, about four inches down on your ribs)

    Image downloaded from http://mettacenter.com

  • 7/31/2019 Eft Explained

    23/26

EFT Explained - Page 23 - Copyright Dr Peter EH Smee, circle-of-excellence.com, 2008

We are now about half way through the main sequence and wehave dealt with all the most complex points. The rest is plainsailing, because all the rest of the points that we are interested inare on the hand. (Again, it does not matter which hand you use totap with and which you tap onto).

    Image downloaded from http://mettacenter.com

As you can see, there are points at the end of most of your fingers, located on the side of the finger, where the nail embeds into thefinger itself. Plus we need to re-tap the Karate Chop point.

But to make life easy, even though i t takes a few seconds longer todo, many people just tap the side of all the fingers in turn, and thentap on the Karate Chop point. That way, you can get into a rhythm, there is little to remember, and you can focus on tapping, whilstsaying aloud whatever key words that you want to use to help you

keep in mind the memory or the experience on which you areworking.

Sotap all the head and body points and then tap the fingerpointsand you have completed your fist sequence.

Do this two or three times, and then we can add in one moresophistication, before we recalibrate how we are feeling about theemotion on which we are working.

    Step Three: Nine Gamut

Okif you have not felt a little foolish so far, then prepare yourself, asthe next step does look a little strange. But it is worth doing!

You need to tap a point known as the Nine Gamut Point, which islocated in the valley formed between your little finger and your ringfinger (as ever, either hand will do).

    Image downloaded from http://mettacenter.com

While tapping, you need to keep in mind the issue you are working onand you also undertake the following processes.

Each physical process activates a different part of the brain, and so,while looking silly, each process is very important if you are to clearemotion from each of the segments of your mind and brain in which itmight be hiding.

While tapping the Gamut Point: First, you close your eyes; Second, open your eyes and look straight ahead; Third, look hard down and tothe left; Fourth, look hard down and to the right; Fifth, circle your eyesclockwise; Sixth, circle your eyes anti-clockwise; Seventh, hum a tunelike Happy Birthday To You, to activate a sequential mode of thought;Eighth, count one to nine, out loud, to activate a different sequentialmode of thought; Ninth, hum a tune, like Happy Birthday, again.

(NB: If you have ever studied NLP or Accelerated Learning, you willunderstand how moving your eyes can be used as a way to accesscertain kinds of memories).

    The end is in sight

Ideally, you will go through all the main points a couple of times, then run the Nine Gamut, then run through all the main points acouple more times.

You can then vividly do your best to imagine the situation and theemotion on which you are working, and rate the degree to whichyou feel it. Or if you are working on a physical condition, like the

muscle tension that is preventing you from breathing as deeply asyou might, breath deeply a few times and notice how much moredeeply you can breathe and also notice any changes that haveoccurred. Rate how much you have improvedor not

Ideally, the strength of any negative emotion will have diminished. Ifit has disappeared, you can stop. If it is still at a problematic level, you may well find that some inspiration comes to mind, and thatyou feel the need to slightly (or even radically) change your focusand your affirmation. For example, if you were working on anger ata spouse, who has done something to annoy you, you may f ind thatyour anger is actually not at the thing you originally thought of, but

actually a more underlying pattern of behaviour. If this is the case, go back to the beginning and start again, fromsetting and rating your focus, on through doing your affirmations, tapping all your points a couple of times, doing the Nine Gamut, tapping all your points a couple of t imes. This may sound longwinded, but once you have completed the process a few dozentimes, you begin to speed up and you will find that you can tap outa whole sequence in a couple of minutes.

Compare a few rounds of tapping to several years of talk therapy, and you will see that while you may look and sound silly for acouple of minutes, tapping is far more effective than chatting andrehearsing and nursing your issues. When chatting, you often findthat your issues appear and feel to get bigger and bigger in yourminds eye. In contrast, using tapping, you do your best to makeyour issues as big as possible. You then tap until you literally find itimpossible to generate the negative feelings any more.

By draining the power of the emotion from the energy body, via theMeridians, you literally drain away the energy that powers yourability to feel in response to a memory or an event or an incident ora physical condition. The memory then exists in isolation, assomething you can describe, but which now feels distant.

Your Monsters will either look a lot smaller

Or you may even see an upsetting situation from a different perspectiveand find it to be more positive than you ever imagined
