By partnering with our customers,Efficiency Vermont makes it easy orthem to take action. Through communityengagement, peer-to-peer learning, andin-depth consultation, Vermonters gainaccess to unbiased technical expertisethat leads to clear next steps or boostingefficiency. Together we are pushing theenvelope on what’s possible—driving

down energy use and costs home byhome, business by business. This rees upresources that strengthen our economyand promote jobs, while helping toreduce our impact on the environment.

Roxbury turns adversity into opportunity

In , the historic Roxbury CommunityHall suffered extensive damage in TropicalStorm Irene.

Rather than simply restoring the hall to itsoriginal state, the town’s energy committeedecided to take advantage o the opportunity torebuild, and renovate the building in a way that

would ensure maximum energy efficiency andfinancial sustainability or years to come.

From air sealing and insulation to moistureremediation throughout, no corner o thebuilding was lef untouched. The most notableimprovements came rom separating thesecond floor, used only or storage, rom the

conditioned spaces below. Efficiency Vermontworked with the Roxbury Energy Committeeand EnergySmart o Vermont, providingtechnical expertise and overseeing qualitycontrol throughout the rebuilding process.

Today, the Roxbury Community Hall remainsan important gathering place, and is one o the

most-used and most-loved buildings in the town.

Family home goes from drafty to cozy

Annabelle Lowrie and Michael Benvenuto knewtheir Jericho armhouse needed some work.The bills were high, the home was drafy, andwhen they went down to the basement to do thelaundry in the winter they could actually seetheir breath.

contractor Building Energy conducted an audito the home and presented a list o solutions;then helped the homeowners prioritize nextsteps. They air sealed and insulated the attic andbasement, as well as the area where the home’soriginal s construction met the moremodern s addition.

Today, the house is much more comortable,while requiring less uel. In act, the oilcompany recently contacted the homeownersafer doing a routine fill-up: They’d noticed howlittle oil had been used and wanted to be surethe amily was doing okay. The homeowners arehappy to report they’re doing better than ever.

Reducing energy costs while increasing business

Burlington International Airport, locatedin South Burlington, needed to expand andupgrade its acilities to meet demand orflights into and out o northern Vermont. Atthe same time, South Burlington was quicklyapproaching maximum electric load, usingalmost as much energy as the power company

could provide. I something didn’t change soon,the city would need to increase inrastructureand build a new substation, at huge expenseto residents.

The airport and its power provider, BurlingtonElectric Department, approached EfficiencyVermont and together, we reduced the airport’s

power usage by , even as operationsexpanded significantly. How? Throughinnovative, energy-efficient approaches tointerior lighting, exterior lighting, and climatecontrol.

Today, visitors to Burlington InternationalAirport can view an interactive exhibit that

Accelerating profits by driving down energy costs

Robert Molleur’s Hardwick car dealershipneeded some new exterior lights, so he visitedEfficiency Vermont’s website. He knew hewould find inormation on the best choices orenergy-efficient lighting, and maybe even somerebates to help him make an upgrade. Whathe didn’t know was just how happy he would

be with the lighting he chose, or how muchmoney it would actually save him.

Molleur upgraded three exterior wall fixturesto LEDs, purchased rom a local electricaldistributor ound on Efficiency Vermont’swebsite and made affordable through a rebate.Right away, he and his staff noticed a marked

difference in the quality o the light: it wasbright and uniorm, and even the color wasimproved.

It wasn’t until a month later, though, thatMolleur realized the ull benefits o thenew lights when he opened his electric bill.His monthly savings quickly paid off the

initial expense o the bulbs themselves, andMolleur has been able to invest the moneyback into his business.

Continuous Energy Improvement pays off

With a strong commitment to energy savings,Vermont Precision Tools’ partnership withEfficiency Vermont exemplifies an approachcalled Continuous Energy Improvement. Thisapproach, which includes regular maintenance,capital upgrades, process improvements, andemployee engagement, can yield impressive

energy savings.Founded in , Vermont Precision Tools isa locally owned company that manuactureshigh-precision tools or industrial applications.Located in Swanton, the company employs people in a ,-square-oot acility, plus people in a second plant in Kentucky.

Since , Efficiency Vermont has workedside-by-side with Vermont Precision Toolsto take a comprehensive look at energy use.The relationship began more than a decadeago during the construction o their Swantonacility. A ew years later, efficiency upgrades totheir compressed air system were implemented,

along with lighting and HVAC improvements,some o which are still under way. Therelationship is almost as old as EfficiencyVermont itsel, resulting in accumulatedsavings o ,.
