IntroductionThe tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) is a nearly
universally popular vegetable grown. They are a good source of vitamin A and C that help
alleviate deficiencies of the same vitamins.Tomatoes can be eaten fresh or processed for use in a
wide array of products.Production of tomatoes can be a profitable way of
utilizing limited land resources and abundant labour, it can be grown in household garden and earn a family income or it can be grown on large scale for urban market and for processing.
Tomato plant is a perennial plant in the family solanaceae with relatives like tobacco, capsicum, potato, nightshade, eggplant among others.
Tomatoes originated from Mexico to Europe and Asia later to Africa.
Problem statement and justificationProblem
Tomatoes are vulnerable to many fungal infections. E.g. early blight (Alternalia solani) late blight (Phytophthora infestans). This diseases have become a menace in tomato farming.
JustificationThis calls for a need to develop a strategy that is affordable and appropriate to both farmers in small scale and large scale production, hence efficacy trial.
OBJECTIVES
Broad ObjectiveTo evaluate the efficacy of the fungicide Millionaire 69% WDG in control of fungal blights of tomatoes.
Specific ObjectiveTo know the effective rate of application from different concentrations of the fungicide Millionaire 69% WDG on blight control.
MATERIALS AND METHODOLOGY
MaterialsTools and Equipment: Jembe, tape measure, rope, knapsack sprayer, wooden hammer, and sticks.Chemicals:
i) test fungicide: Millionaire 69% WDG – AI; Mancozeb 60% + Dimethomorph 9%.ii) standard fungicide: Ridomil 68%WG – AI; Metalaxyl 40g/kg + Mancozeb 640g/kg
Crop: Tomato.Variety: Cal J.
MethodologyExperiment layout: the design of experiment will be Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Timing of Application of the test product(s): At first signs of pest infestation after normal pest scouting.Number of applications and intervals: Determined by the pest population/ infestation at 7-14 days intervalApplication Method: by using a knapsack sprayer.Data collection: I will be doing it once a week. The leaves infected will be counted and be scored against the total number of leaves on each plant.

Data analysis
Data collected at the end of season will be analyzed by use of analysis of variance, ANOVA. To show the significance of different parameters tested at the end of the experiments.
