Chapter I (Introduction)

Background of the Study

• McCaffery 1999, defines pain as“whatever the experiencing personsays it is, existing whenever he (or she)says it does.” Basic to this definition isthe care provider’s willingness to

believe that the client is experiencingpain and that the client is the realauthority on that pain.



• Health care professionals recently havefocused on the positive effects of humor and laughter on health and disease.

Humor in nursing is defined as helpingthe client “to perceive, appreciate, andexpress what is funny, amusing, or

ludicrous in order to establishrelationships, relieve tension, releaseanger, facilitate learning, or cope with apainful feeling” (McCloskey 2000).



• Many health care settings are nowinterested in providing humor as acaring skill and have recognized that

“laughter is the best medicine.”



Purpose of the Study

• The purpose of the study is todetermine the effects of humor therapy in patients after an invasiveprocedure in a selected health carefacility in Zamboanga City.



Significance of the Study

• Physiological research in the field ofhumor and laughter has uncoveredamazing results, suggesting thatlaughter has many clinical benefits.



Scope and Delimitation

The study will be centered mainly toorthopedic patients confined in

Zamboanga City Medical Center.Middle-aged (40-65 years of age)respondents will be chosen since the

age and developmental stage of aclient is an important variable that willinfluence both the reaction to and the

expression of pain.



Statement of the Problem

• What are the influencing factors ofpatients’ pain perception?

• In what ways will humor therapyalleviate patients’ pain post-procedure?

• What are the benefits derived from theutilization of Humor therapy?



Hypothesis • There is no significant difference in

patients’ pain perception between

respondents of the control andexperimental group.

• There is no significant correlation

between giving humor therapy topatients after an invasive procedureand improvement of patients’ health

status.



Chapter II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

• The review of literature of this studyfocuses on how humor therapy affectsthe pain perception of patients’ who

have undergone an invasiveprocedure. This highlights the differentaspects of humor therapy, effects of

humor or laughter to the human body,and review of some relevantresearches which has great help to our

study.

Chapter III METHODOLOGY

Research Design

• The study is an experimental research,utilizing quantitative method for datapresentation, analysis andinterpretation. The primordial objectiveis to develop and utilize Humor

Therapy in orthopedic patients after undergoing an invasive procedure.



Research Population

• Diagnosed with general orthopedic acute

cases.

• Have undergone an invasive procedure.

• Residents of Zamboanga City

• Selection of 40 respondents that will be

divided for the experimental and controlgroup.

• Ages from 45 – 60 (middle adults)



Sampling Design

• This study will be conducted topatients subjected to an invasiveprocedure and are admitted at theOrthopedic Ward in Zamboanga CityMedical Center. Twenty respondents

under the control and experimentalgroup will be chosen thru randomsampling.



Research Instrument

• Initial Pain Assessment Tool

• Pain Assessment Questionnaire• Numeric Pain Scale

• Pain Monitoring Chart



Statistical Tools

• After data will be collected, theanswers of the respondents in thequestionnaire will be analyzed throughdescriptive statistics. The use ofmeasure of central tendency – mean,

median and mode and alsopercentage.



• To compare pain perception betweenthe experimental and control group,we will be using t-test that assesses

whether the means of two groupsare statistically different from eachother. This analysis is appropriate in

comparing the means of two groups(experimental and control).



• To compare the correlation betweenhumor therapy and improved patienthealth status, Pearson R will be

employed.
