INTRODUCTION:

With a population of 18 cores, Pakistan bears the burden of one of the most

illiterate countries of Asia. About half of the male population is illiterate and

two third of the female population can’t even write their names.

Generally, the degree of matriculation classifies a person as ‘literate’. Pakistan’s

illiteracy rate is 42% according to latest survey in June, 2012. In our

surrounding region, Pakistan’s literacy rate is a little better than Nepal and

Bangladesh, which have illiteracy rates of 49 and 52 percent respectively. Otherlikes the Maldives and Sri-Lanka have achieved far more impressive results

given that less 10 percent of the population in both these countries is illiterate.

Even India has 31 percent illiteracy.

Rate, despite its enormous population. According to literacy rate estimates

 projected in last year’s National Economic Survey, there seem to be tremendous

variance in literacy rates between the Provinces. Baluchistan has the lowest

average since only 33 percent of the Province is literate compared to the

national average of over 50 percent. Moreover, only 27 percent of women in

Baluchistan are literate.

The literacy rate in Pakistan is divided into three regions that are in cities,

villages and tribal areas. The literacy rate in Pakistan has been increasing every

year. Below are some points regarding literacy rate in Pakistan. The literacy rate

of 87% in Islamabad from 20% in Kholo district. In the period 2000-2004, the

Pakistanis in the age group 55-64 was the literacy rate of almost 30% of persons

aged 45-54 were the literacy rate of about40% of those between 25-34 wereliterate 50% while those aged 15-24 were literate in more than 60%.

These data show that with each generation, literacy rate in Pakistan has

increased by about 10%. The literacy rate indifferent regions, in particular by

gender. In the tribal areas of literacy among women is 7.5%

CAUSES OF ILLITERACY

1.  Poverty:

Around the Pakistan, the impact of illiteracy on personal income varies but it is

clear earning potential is limited .Illiterate people earn less than their literate

counter parts and do not have the literacy skills required to undertake further.

Poverty is the main cause of illiteracy. The poverty rate in Pakistan is 27%.

2.  Learning disabilities :

Learning disabilities is also a main cause of illiteracy in Pakistan. If there are

increase in number of disability people so the illiteracy rate will b increase

3.  Lack of schools in rural areas.

In rural area no of schools are limited.

4.  Poor education System.

Unfortunately! Our system of education is not so

strong e.g. there are different types of courses are being taught in every

different school for the same class.

5.  Crime

Due to illiteracy people don’t have jobs and they commit crime. 

6.  Unemployment

An illiterate person is not able to get a handsome job so it

increases unemployment.

7.  Low Budged Of Education :

This is one of the major causes. In 2013

 budget only 2.3% is allocated to education.

8.  Ratio of gender discrimination:

Most females are not allowed to get higher

education in Pakistan which leads for illiteracy.

  Should establish more schools.

  Education should be free.

  More concentration on Adult education.

  Education should be equal for all the society members so that they create

the environment of faith and discipline.

  Different seminars should be arranged to provide information.

Constitution of Pakistan (1973) :

State shall be responsible for:

“Eradication of illiteracy and provision of free and compulsory

education up to secondary level, within minimum possible time” (Article 37-B, 1973 Constitution of Pakistan)

Emphasis must be given on development of analytical faculties of the

Future policy reforms will emphasize the teaching of science subjects in

English at public secondary schools.
