    At DuPont, we

    have experienced the power

    of deliberate, systematic application

of the de Bono tools to practical problems

with remarkable results. The Lateral Thinking

Techniques led to a major breakthrough in process

continuity at a fiber plant with a radical alteration

of basic equipment design, reducing the number of

    moving parts by 80%.

Every organisation needs tothink more effectively. Great

companies foster creativity andinnovation because they realisethe catalyst for growth and costsavings is through the effectivemanagement of their thinkingprocess.

Effective Thinking affects the bottom line of

any organisation. Companies can save money

    by increasing productivity, designing innovative

new processes and developing new cost

    reduction strategies.

The de Bono Effective Thinking course will

improve critical thinking abilities within your

    organisation, develop complex problem solving

skills and provide the participants with the

thinking tools and creativity techniques that

lead to better judgment and decision making.

Doctor de Bonos creativity techniques have been

used by Fortune 500 companies to generate

new revenue streams by helping them recognise

new markets and develop innovative solutions,

which otherwise would have been missed

    opportunities.

The thinking tools were designed by Dr. Edward

de Bono. The tools work in conjunction with

the brains natural ability to think. By adapting

a systematic framework, de Bono effective

thinkers focus their attention on discrete areas,

thereby giving them a better overview of almost

    any situation.

The Effective Thinking course aims to teachpeople:

    > Critical Thinking

    > Complex Problem Solving

    > Judgment and Decision-Making

    > Active Listening

Forbes magazine states that these are the top

four in demand skills needed in the modernworkplace. These are some of the techniques

that can be mastered with the de Bono Effective

    Thinking Course.

By becoming a certified Effective Thinker you

can easily demonstrate these abilities to future

employers. Companies that wish to educate their

current employees in these skills can also make

    Leadership Development programme.

This thinking course so far hasincreased my awareness of various

things to consider in planning, problem solving,

design, the organization of ideas, negotiation,

communication, and the gathering of ideas. It

has helped me focus my attention on one area

at a time and therefore, I believe, to be a more

    effective thinker.Laurel Boucher, de Bono

I would like to thank the Effective Thinking

Team for all of their support and guidance that

has made this online training possible.

Ive had recently advised a global

player of the energy sector, and used several

methods learned during this training. The result

was just amazing and we are now working to

    Module 1: Thinking Tools

The first module will introduce the student to Dr.Edward de Bonos seven key thinking tools. Each

tool has its own functionality and place within

    the thinking process.

    1: Are you a thinker?

This lesson helps you look at your self-image as

a thinker and at thinking skills. Setting the stage

for your journey towards Effective Thinking.

    2: Plus, minus and interesting

Analysis of Plus, Minus and Interesting points.

This is a powerful tool for considering new ideas.

    3: Aims, goals and objectives

The examination of Aims, Goals and Objectives.

A.G.O. is used to clarify thinking, for example,

    when considering new initiatives.

    4: Consider all factors

This involves a structured process to the

Consideration of All Factors. It is often

used when considering situations prior to

developing ideas. CAF helps ensure that

    no possibilities have been overlooked.

    5: Other peoples views

Other Peoples Views. Almost any thinking

activity involves other people, at least indirectly:

choices, decisions, plans, and so forth. OPV

tries to get the thinker inside the heads of those

    involved.

    6: First important priorities

Stands for First Important Priorities. This is abasic tool like the others. It provides a

deliberate instruction to you (or to others) to

focus directly on priorities (in general

    or at a particular moment).

    7: Alternatives. Possibilities and choices

Another of the convenience tools that we can

use with ourselves or with others in order to

direct our minds to carry out some task. A.P.C.

involves looking for the Alternatives, Possibilities

or Choices (whichever is appropriate) in that

    situation.

    12

    8: Consequence and sequel

This is a scan of time for your brain. Helping you

focus upon the consequences that might arisefrom a decision, course of action or change of

    any sort over time periods.

    Module 2: Thinking Situations

Module 2 uses the thinking tools the student

has acquired from the first module.

The course examines decision and problem-solving techniques which you can use to

    effectively manage those situations.

    1: Plan and action

Getting things done, making something happen,

    implementation, carrying something

out. Thinking is involved not only in arriving at a

decision but also in carrying it out.

Planning is usually an essential part of getting

    something done.

    2: Decision and evaluation

Judging the value of an option. Is this worth

doing? Making decisions and making choices.Decision making can be easy with the right tools.

    3: Problem-solving and design

Finding solutions to problems, and designing

solutions to problems. In a sense any design task

is also a problem-solving task because there is

something to be achieved and no obvious way

    of achieving it.

    4: Coping and organising:

Coping with confusion and mess. Creating order

out of chaos. Organising different elements so

that the whole works - a common enough real-

    life situation.

    5: Negotiation and conflict

Two party situations often have each side trying

to get what they want. This lesson will help

you turn arguments and conflict into win-win

    outcomes.

5: Stepping stone:Learn to look for the way forward a step at a

time. Every creative journey starts with a step.

    6: Random juxtaposition:

Unleash the power of your mind with this

technique when you need it. Constraints,

    shaping, using and harvesting ideas.

7: The treatment of ideas:Constraints, shaping, using and harvesting ideas.

    8 : Focus

How to define the creative thrust. The creation of

idea sensitive areas for the generation of creative

    thinking.
