The immobilization period after burn is accompaniedby numerous detrimental effect namely severdeconditioning.

Whole-body vibration(WBV) standing in different staticpositions or exercising on a vibrating platform.

Whole-body vibration enhances muscle power, improve muscular performance via neurogenic

potentiation involving the spinal reflexes and muscleactivation.

Hypothesis: The addition of WBV to home basedexercise program for patients with healed burn willresult in more gain in muscle strength.

Aim: To investigate whether the combination of WBVand home based exercise program during 8 weekshas any additional effect on knee extensors and ankleplanter flexor compared to an identical exercise

program without vibration on patients with healedthermal burn.

Burned patients(men and women) were recruited fromthe burn unit in Umm Almasryeen Hospital afteragreement to the participation in the study.

Patients were randomly assigned to one of two groups;whole body vibration(WBV) group and control group.

All participants follow exercise guidelines prescribedthe exercise performed at home (three days/week)

instructions about there was no exercise done on therest of the week.

Random assignment of patients was conducted intotwo stages:

Stage one involved instructing two physical

therapists.Second stage involved randomly assigning thepatients to either the whole body vibration group orthe control group.

Outcome measures include knee extensor strengthand planter flexor by using isokinetic dynamometer.

Forty burned patients were identified as potentialparticipants.

Six were excluded because they failed to fulfill the

inclusion criteria and three refused to participate. The demographic characteristics of participants inboth groups are listed in Table 2.

The mean values of peak torque for knee extensionand ankle planter flexion are reported in Table 3.

This study was designed to test whether thecombination of WBV and home based physicaltherapy exercise program has any additional effect onknee extensors and ankle planter flexor musclesstrength.

The results indicate that the 8 weeks program canincreased muscle strength more than home based

physical therapy exercise program in the absence ofvibrations.

For an optimal vibration training design, properparameters need to be determined.

It has been hypothesized that vibration training may

improve muscle strength by facilitating neural controlfollowing tonic vibration reflex muscle activation.

Limitations:The relatively small number of participants mightlimit the generalization of the study results.

Subjects were recruited from the only one regionalburn centre.

Possibly the fact that the evaluator of the finaloutcomes was not completely blind of patientgroups.

The results of the current study demonstrated thatexercise program plus WBV training program for 8-weeks produced a significant improvement in plantar-

flexor and knee extensors strength for adult withthermal burn. Finally, the strength gains followingvibration training appear to be WBV used as one ofphysical therapy methods for burned patientrehabilitation.
