    1.1 Background of study

For Indonesia, English is a foreign language where thislanguage could be obtained through a learning process. ItCould not be separated from the world of Englisheducation. It is an important point for any student to learnthe knowledge of language while they are at school.

Nevertheless there are still many students who are notinterested in learning English with a variety of reasonssuch as boring and too difficult to understand, thereforethe teacher should have a creative way of teaching Englishin order to motivate each student and make the learning

    process better.

Listening skill is one of the important elements in thelanguage skills to be able to understand every word in theEnglish language. Listening skill is an understanding of

what is to be heard either directly or indirectly such asthrough media such as songs in English. Learningactivities could be done by listening to an interestinglearning media that could make the learning process moreeffective.

Based on the observation of practice teaching and thelearning process in the SMPN 3 Palangka Raya especiallyin class VIII, the English teachers were teaching withoutusing any instructional media, but only with theconventional process such as giving the definition of a

certain text at the beginning of learning and continuedwith the example of problems and then concluding thelearning with exercises.

These learning activities made students become less interestedin learning english, they talked with friends during the lessons, disturbed each other and were lack of focus in the study. Theyoften asked permission to go out of the class. Learningactivities such as this led the students less interested in theEnglish language teaching and learning process, they regardedit simply as a routine activity that must be followed only whenlearning in school.

The media is needed to deliver material of teaching. Song is anaudio medium. It is capable of being a source of learning andcould convey information and messages to overcome problemsabove. This is in accordance with the books of educationalmedia (2009: 118) where the audio media will be very effective

when using sound and voice as able to stimulate the listener touse imagination and fantasy so that the listener can visualizethe messages conveyed. therefore to make the teaching andlearning process be effective, so song as media can be use as analternative to attract the student attention and participation atclass.
