What is a HighSchool Year?Spend a school year or a semester overseas, live witha host family and attend a local high school - that’swhat a high school year overseas is all about.

The people you will get to know best are usually your host family. They will teach you about their country and share their everyday lives with you. We thoroughly screen our host families and in most of our countries, our host families are volunteers. In some countries host families receive a small stipend as a gesture of appreciation.

In addition to spending time with your host family and going to school, you will have the opportunity to try new activities and play sports in your free time. This is a chance for you to meet new friends and expand your horizons. If you are interested in seeing more of your host country you can join an EF Discovery Tour to discover popular destinations and well-known sights.

Choose from one of EF’s 7 exciting High School destinations where you can study in English, French, German or Spanish. This is an amazing opportunity to learn about another country, make new friends and become fluent in another language. You will return home with memories and friends that last a lifetime!

Adjusting to a new culture and living in a totally new environment can be demanding. As a guest in your new country, you will need to adjust and adapt, as well as show humility and understanding to the people around you. If you are up for the challenge, then we guarantee that you will return as a more mature person and a true global citizen.

You will have a local EF representative who will stay in contact with you and choose a suitable school for you in your host family’s area. We operate a 24-hour emergency hotline in all host countries, ensuring superior support during your exchange year. Your local EF office in New Zealand is there for you and your parents before, during and after your exchange year.

You will quickly feel like

you are a member of the

family.

Share laughs, stories and

learn about a new culture.

Try out new sports and activities with

your high school friends and host family.

Your new homeWhile you are away you will live in a new home. Your host family will be the heart of your exchange year. You will come to share everyday life with them and join in their family traditions.

Hand-picked host familiesStaff and local representatives spend a lot of time finding the right host family for you. They must have a genuine interest in hosting an exchange student. Just like you, our families go through a rigorous application and in-home interview process before they are selected. The families also go through a prepa-ration process before your arrival to their home. Voluntary hostingIn the majority of our destinations, our host families are volunteers and do not host for money. They open their homes and hearts because they love the chance to ‘adopt’ a new family member and share their own culture, while learning about one another. In some countries our host families receive a small stipend as a contribution for hosting an exchange student. Experienced host familiesMany of our host families have hosted exchange students before and are very familiar with our exchange programme. Some of them host a student every year and talk about their "sons and daughters" around the world.

“Our exchangestudent Carmen is already

like the big sister for our three sons. She confides in us and we share the daily life with laughs,

homework, cooking and all the rest that is part of real family life.”

“In school I quickly got to know great people. My semester in Ireland helped me to become more open and confident.”

- Friederike Kaufmann from the Netherlands went to Ireland

The Beauty of IrelandWherever you find yourself living, you will find the beauty of Ireland in its tumbling landscapes and coastlines of Éire, which is what the locals call the Republic of Ireland. With almost 1500 kilometers of spectacular coastline, the mighty Atlantic ocean is never far away. The sheer energy of the capital city Dublin is matched by the beauty of the coastline cliffs, the flowing hills and castle ruins.

Myths and LegendsHospitality is a big part of Irish culture, so settling in with your host family should be a very relaxing experience. Experience the Irish “gift of gab”, which gives them the ability to speak eloquently to everyone they meet. A year in Ireland will let you get familiar with this typically Irish skill. Your host family will be keen to teach you all about traditional Irish culture and customs, from cel-ebrating St. Patrick’s Day to tasting Dublin Bay prawns.

Across Ireland you will find vibrant cities, romantic villages, amazing landscapes and warm people. Welcome to the Emerald Isle!

Coming to AmericaI decided to go with EF as they seemed like a credible company with a good reputation. They provided me with thorough information from the beginning of my interest to the end of my exchange, helping answer all the que-stions I had.

When it was time to find out where I would be going, it came down to the wire. Waiting had to be the most nervous part for me. Even-tually I found out that I was going to Houston, Texas. Will I be on a farm? I bet my host fa-mily have guns! Wrong and wrong. But yes, everything is bigger in Texas. You never really know what to expect until you’re there.

Big BrotherI have two older brothers here in New Zea-land. However, now I was the oldest with two younger sisters! This was a bit of a head spin at first but I soon settled in at “home” as a big brother. My host family took me to many places around Texas but also out of state to Louisiana, New Mexico and New York. Not only were these trips extremely fun but they help me bond with my new family. It was great getting to know them and seeing other parts of America.

There are many movies out there about Ame-rican High Schools and it’s hard to believe they are true. Well they’re pretty accurate! From pep rallies to marching bands they have it all. Now I could have become the next gre-atest thing in football, but I’m not that sporty, so I used my new found accent instead and joined debate team. I ended up at the State competition and earned my letterman [jacket] though Debate. I have great memories, good friends and skills for life from this club.

Camp and Discovery TourLanguage and Culture Camp was a stop I had before meeting my host family. I found this to be a great way to ease into American life. Camp was a blast as I have made many friends from all around the world and I also got to spend a day in Boston. Then Los An-geles, Hollywood, Las Vegas, the Grand Can-yon, Arizona. This was my EF Discovery Tour. Along with 50 fellow exchange students and a charter bus we embarked on a journey we would never forget. The Grand Canyon is big, we all know that, but when being there it se-ems even bigger.

I have gained so much from this year. My in-dependence has grown along with a greater appreciation of culture and home. I found lea-ving America harder, simply because there is no set date to return. Luckily I will be jetting off again at the end of this year to see my McElre-ath family (Laurie-Anne, Todd, Taryn & Car-son) who I now simply call family. No longer just a Kiwi, but the Texas Kiwi.

A Year in TexasTo me, an exchange year meant ending my high school life a little differently than your average student. I wanted to throw myself out of my comfort zone and see another part of the world. Then one day at a careers expo I found a brochure, a brochure like this one here, and my dream could now be a reality.

Ah oui, la FranceNatasha Murden, Wellington

I was 14 when I saw an EF poster in my French classroom and immediately decided I was going to go on exchange to France. I don’t remember having any trouble convincing my parents to let me go although it must have seemed weird to them. I, the kid who used to get homesick on school camp, wanted to go overseas for a whole year by myself?

I was determined however, so all through high school I worked to earn the $13,000 I needed, first saving my $25 I earned every week babysitting and later with part time jobs and fundraising. Leaving New Zealand was hard, but not nearly as hard as leaving France at the end of my exchange. I went straight to my host family and started school two days later. People say that the French are arrogant and unfriendly but I didn’t find that at all. Everyone was extremely welcoming both at school and in the community. I made friends really quickly and I still talk to them all the time now that I’m back. They all were very sweet about helping me with my French and liked to mimic my “cute” accent!

I went to school and spent my spare time travelling around Europe and France, visiting places with my host family, shopping, taking millions of photos, and hanging out with both school friends and other exchange students.

My exchange taught me so many more things than just a new language. I learnt a whole new way of life; my mind has been opened to a new way of thinking. I also learnt to be more independent, responsible and confident. Being put that far out of your comfort zone really makes you grow and develop in ways that going to school and university in your own country cannot. If I had not gone on exchange I would most likely be a failed vet student, but instead I am studying Law to become an ambassador and loving it!

I truly had the most amazing year of my life whilst on exchange and I can’t recommend the experience enough. A year speeds by so fast and you quickly learn to make the most of every moment. I’ve only been back for five months, but I’m already counting down the days until I can return to my second home!

A Parent’s StoryJolie Murden, Natasha's mum

Tash first became interested in taking part in an exchange in her second year of secondary school. We went to an EF information evening in Wellington and she was hooked. I had always wanted to go on an exchange myself but couldn’t so I encouraged her

every step of the way. After four years of sacrifice, saving

and fundraising she had saved the full cost of the exchange herself. We were very proud that Tash had shown such determination

and dedication. As she was only 17 when she finished

school in New Zealand we decided that rather than disrupt her studies for a year, she would go on her exchange after finishing Year 13.

The monthly mailouts were read cover to cover and Tash gave us a running commentary of what she should be preparing next. EF had thought of everything and we felt that Tash could not have been any more prepared before she left.

The day she left was scary, worrying, heart wrenching and also exciting. We had been working towards this for four years. There were lots of tears from both of us. It didn’t hit me how hard it would be to see her go until she had got on the plane. It helped knowing that Tash would be meeting up with other EF exchange students in Auckland and fly with them some of the way. Tash found friends quickly at her school and joined in with many activities. EF were great and her area co-ordinator was wonderful.

We were lucky enough to be able to visit Tash at the end of her exchange and even stayed with her host family for a few days. I only hope that they come to New Zealand one day so we can repay their incredible hospitality and caring of Tash. They took her in and call her their ‘New Zealand daughter’. It was fantastic to see her and have our own fluent tour guide around Paris.

Tash has grown so much as a person. Her plans for the future completely changed while she was away. Her eyes were opened to the world and all the opportunities that exist. She has come to believe more in herself, gained confidence and could quite happily travel around the world by herself without a problem. She has come back ready for the next stage of her life. She remains in close contact with her friends and host family and will be going back to visit.I thoroughly recommend an exchange for your child. EF is a fantastic organisation. So where would you like to go?

Host a student!

Play a vital role in shaping international friendships by welcoming a student into your home. You will share cultures, customs, food and history, while beginning a very special, lifelong friendship.

The EF Foundation Advantage• EF Foundation host families choose the student they wish to host from a variety of nationalities.• Students provide their own spending money and carry full medical insurance.• Host families are expected to provide meals, a place to sleep and a caring environment.• Host families receive a monthly contribution.• Host families come from all walks of life; retired couples, young families and single parents. It is

not essential to have a teenager in the family.• Each student and host family is assigned an International Exchange Co-ordinator (IEC). These

people are trained volunteers and are supported by a 24 hours emergency phone.

Join this worldwide circle of friends and experience for yourself a time of love, learning and growth with a teenager from another country!

How does EF match students with families?EF Foundation has a nationwide network of volunteers called International Exchange Co-ordinators (IECs). Your IEC will spend a lot of time with you, matching your family with a student who is best suited to your personali-ties and interests. All our IECs are trained and thoroughly committed to intercultural learning. Throughout the year, your IEC will act as an important contact and support for both you and your student.

How do i know if I am qulaified to host?If you can provide a bedroom, a place at your table and a kind, loving environment for a young person from another country, you have got what it takes! EF Foundation students do not have to have their own rooms, but they must have their own beds and cannot share a room with a child under the age of twelve. Host parents should be at lest 25 years of age.

If the student is eligible to drive in the host country, the student needs to purchase an additional, compulsory driver’s insurance in the host country.

CANCELLATION PROTECTIONEF also offers an optional cancellation protection which pro-tects a student if he/she needs to cancel the programme due to illness, serious injury or death, either of the student or an im-mediate family member (in which case a doctor’s certificate is needed). This insures that all fees will be refunded, except the application fee (if applicable) and the cancellation protec-tion premium.

If the student cancels the programme without any of the above cancellation protections or for any other reason than the ones these protections cover, cancellation fees will apply after the student’s natural parents have signed the booking conditions and/or paid the first Instalment. EF has the right to terminate the contract with immediate effect, by giving the student and the Student’s parents or legal guardian, written notice of termination, in case of any act or decision by any government and/or authority, including but not limited to any law taking effect after the date of the contract, which materially ad-versely affects EF’s position, rights and/or interests.

If a problem should occur during the programme, the student should contact an EF representative as soon as possible so that any issues can be resolved. When on the exchange programme the student should first and foremost contact their International Exchange Coordinator that will have been assigned to them be-fore traveling to their host country. Any complaints need to be raised no later than three (3) months after the completion of the programme and be submitted in written form to the local EF of-fice in the Student’s home country.
