LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Letter From the Editor

H ello Reader,

April is a very exciting month for

EF Chicago for so many reasons!

EF Chicago is expecting around one hun-

dred new faces to come through our doors.

We are so excited to welcome them to our

wonderful school! The new energy is also

coming in with all the new AY students who

are coming back from vacation. The newspa-

per meetings are going to be much louder and much more interesting now

that they are back. I can’t wait to get some new ideas for the next issue!

April is also a great month because of the weather, of course! We are all

proud of you for surviving the cold Chicago winter, especially if you come

from Brazil, Colombia, Saudi Arabia, or another hot country. Finally, spring is

here and we can go outside to ride the Divvys, go for walks near the lake,

and enjoy all the outdoor sporting and music activities that Chicago has to

offer. I’m going to be participating in the Night Nation Run, a running music

festival that raises money for a Stand Up To Cancer, a charity who supports

cancer research. It will be my first official run, so if you are free April 16th,

come to encourage me or join me to raise money for a good cause!

I hope you all enjoy the beginnings of the good weather and the beginning of

a wonderful spring in Chicago. It might be a little rainy this month, but as the

saying goes, “April showers brings May flowers”. Beauty is soon to come!

Wishing you the best,

Miranda

STORY

A pril fools’ Day, sometimes called All Fools’ Day, is the only day of

the year on April 1st when you would be allowed to tell a joke or

play a prank. The jokes and the people who are tricked on that

day are called “April Fools”. Even the media such like newspaper, magazine,

radio, and others strive to report a made-up story on April Fools’ Day eve-

ry year. In recent years, putting elaborate jokes on websites has been draw-

ing attention among young people little by little. However, when did this

custom start? It is said that one of the most famous theories about the

origin of April fools’ Day is an adoption of the Gregorian calendar in

France. People had celebrated the New Year from March 25th to April 1st

until King Charles IX of France adopted the Gregorian calendar which set

January 1st as the New Year. After the adoption, many people resisted the

new date and ironically continued celebrating on April 1st. King Charles

became furious, then put them to death. People in France started making a

racket to protest against the execution. Eventually, this practice spread

widely throughout Europe and turned into a holiday. However, this day is

not a public holiday in any country.

Here are some rules to tell a joke or play a prank:

Tell a joke only during the morning

Don’t tell a joke or play a prank in the after noon

Reveal the trick in the afternoon

Nobody should hurt by the trick or the prank

Don’t take a revenge no matter how you are tricked

As mentioned above, April 1st has been a big event in the world.

For example, in 1980 the BBC reported that the Big Ben was going to be

April Fool’s Day

digitalized in order to keep up with the times. They also announced that the

clock hands would be sold to the first four listeners to contact them. That

announcement received a huge response from listeners shocked and angered

by the proposed change.

In 2001, Copenhagen Metro constructed one of its cars in front of the city

hall to look as if there had been a big accident. It was a retired car from the

subway of Stockholm, scattered with the tiling and loose tiles in front and

behind it.

In 2008, the BBC together with the Telegraph announced that camera crews

had captured a large number of penguins taking to the air. It even offered a

video clip of these flying penguins, which became one of the most viewed

videos on the internet. https://youtu.be/9dfWzp7rYR4

These kind of

jokes and pranks

give us astonish-

ment and make

our 1/365 day

something special.

If you trick someone, please keep the rules in mind so that everyone will be

able to enjoy April Fools’ Day!

FOOD

A pril 20th is Nutella's birthday. In fact, it was invented on this day

on 1964 by Michele Ferrero. In little time it became really well

know in all the world france, German, Australia, Usa, Jappan and

Suth America and a real phenomenon studied also by sociologists.

But before to talk about this delicious cream chocolate, I'd like write a lit-

tle about the Nutella's home made Ferrero.

Ferrero is an Italian multinational specializing in confectionery products,

founded in 1942 by Pietro Ferrero in Alba (Piemonte Italy) . The Ferrero

Group is present in five continents, in over one hundred countries, has for-

ty operating companies , twenty factories and over 25,000 employees .

Nowadays Ferrero's products are "global", they are sold everywhere. The

key words to Ferrero's success are: high quality, respect and consideration

of consumers and employees, enthusiasm, strength and creativity .

Thanks to its core values, In May 2009 Ferrero got the "Reputation

Award". This is one of the most prestigious international awards that com-

panies can receive. Consumers from 32 countries have to vote (based on

criteria such as trust, admiration, innovation, positive feelings and overall

estimate) for the best company out of 600 of the world's largest companies.

In my opinion, Ferrero is a good example of company that tries to be

"glocal" ( think global, act local ). In fact, it is paying a lot of attention to in-

ternational developments, but also to the relationship within its territory.

Ferrero produces different products such as:

Ferrero pralines, Ferrero Rocher, Raffaello,

Kinder: (Kinder bueno, kinder chocolate, Kinder max, Kinder chocolate

with cereals, Kinder pingui, kinder milk slice etc...)

Tic Tac and Nutella.

As I said in the first part, Nutella was invented in 1964 in Alba (Piemonte

Italy) by Michele Ferrero.

The Nutella's recipe is already a secret but the ingredients are:

Sugar, Palm oil, Hazelnuts, Cocoa, Milk, Lecithin and .Vanillin:

The Nutella name was established in 1964 to replace the previous

"Supercrema Giandujot" (a law forbade the use of the suffix "super" in the

food names). The root of the name is formed from the English word”

nut” (pronounced: NAT) or "nutty", one of the ingredients of the famous

spreadable cream. The -ella suffix made the name easy to pronounce and

remember it made him a typically Italian.

Nowadays, Nutella is still one of the best products produced by Ferrero and

is one of the loveliest cream chocolates in the world. One of Italy’s favorite

breakfast or snacks is bread and Nutella. You can use Nutella in several reci-

pes for make a delicious cake, creps , cold desserts, cheese cake or you can

just it alone. A lot of people love Nutella because it’s a chocolate for every

person. It doesn't know age or status and it's a really easy food to make you

happy.

If you would like to discover more about Nutella there are a lot of blogs and

videos dedicated to it and of course you can follow Nutella on Facebook,

Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest and on Nutella’s Youtube Channel .

POETRY

Colorful and strangest flower

But that greatness hides a deepest secret

Look it so beauty, full of hope

But if you go closer she hides a huge regret

The promise she broke, stay near to the telescope....

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

One day walking through the forest

Thoughts sinking... I found the strangest flower

Now I think she found me, she felt my sadness

She looks at me and I felt her power

Intimidating, full of hope and kindness

But it wasn’t that what attracts me was her power

Colorful and wait....

She was broken too, a connection I found

The spotlight of my sorrow

My heart stop and my knees hit the ground

It was the sorrow that follows

How this strangest flower make that sound

How I could be so shallow?

NEWS

I guess I have to tell you the real reason why I didn't want to write

about the evil spirits. Since I mentioned them in the newsletter meet-

ing, they have been haunting me. They won’t let me sleep! They

threatened me because they don't want students at EF to know about

them. I wrote this article in public places with people around me. I asked

Miranda to publish this when I leave EF.

It was Monday, Feb 8th. The weather was cold and dry. Even if it was 4:45

pm, it was dark outside and so depressing that I did not want to look out

the windows. When my class ended, I was heading to the door to leave the

school. I had a strange feeling of distress and a pain in my heart. Some part

of me thought that something bad was about to happen. I was the last one

to leave the class. I was walking by myself in the empty hall thinking about

those strange feelings. All of a sudden, something black came right in front

of my face. It might be smoke, but I think it was something more solid. I

thought something was in my eyes, so I closed my eyes for a second. When

I opened them, Miranda was in front of me with a creepy smile with her lips

closed. Her face was red, very red. She was awkwardly close to me and

smelled like tomatoes. After a couple of seconds of weird silence, she

opened her mouth with the word “Ciao, Rawana”. Her teeth were green.

I started asking myself. Why was she so red? Why did she smell like toma-

Page 13: EF Chicago Newspaper

13

NEWS

Toes? Why were her teeth green? Why did she add the ‘a’ at the end of my

name?

With those thoughts rushing through my mind, and before I got the chance

to reply, she started talking in Italian. All I could see was her creepy green

teeth. Then, she suddenly held my hand and dragged me with the same

creepy smile to the student lounge. I was powerless; I was speechless.

When we got in the middle of the lounge, she was gone; disappeared in a red

smoke. I followed this red smoke with my eyes, until it became black and got

bigger and bigger… and bigger. In few seconds, it was huge like a ship. The

tomato’s smell got stronger and stronger. I felt I was in a tomato sauce facto-

ry. I started seeing people’s faces in the smoke. I heard frightening voices

coming from the smoke. It sounded like terrifying screams from different

people, men and women, children and adults.

I woke up with Jessica’s and Nick’s worried faces. It was 8 in the morning the

next day. It seams I fainted and spent the whole night in the lounge. My bag

was on the floor next to me with all my stuff outside of it. I took few sec-

onds to remember what happened. I was sure it was not a dream. I stood up,

took my bag and ran out of the lounge, ignoring Nick and Jessica’s concern-

ing questions.

Few days after, I faced Miranda and

asked her to explain. She denied eve-

rything. I do not know if it was she

or someone else. All I can say is be

carful EF students! If you have even-

ing classes and you saw the Tomato

teacher in the hall, run, run as fast as

you can, don’t think, and don’t get

distracted with her green teeth and her Italian speech...

BUSINESS

C an you believe that advertisers enter you mind? Weird question?!

Don’t be so sure … Advertisement is powerful. Advertisement

shows you the way to buy items related to a brand. Some people

are shopper addicts, while others are supposed to be more reasonable.

What is your side?

Nowadays, advertisement has changed. As you may have seen, we now live

in a society of hyper-information thanks to the new technology but also in a

simple way, with the street environment as well. Mentalities have changed,

and consequently, customers don’t behave as they did in the past anymore.

They have become very demanding, and advertisers have understood their

clients’ needs. They got used to this new area so far thanks to the boom of

digital. People are looking for uniqueness and they do not hesitate to have a

freedom of expression and spirit. Furthermore, we have to take the social

networks in consideration. Indeed, in the current life it might be difficult to

find people without any social network account. High technology is every-

where at almost any time. — Could you e-mail me please? — I will do it

later. It could be by texting you though. — No problem, both my

smartphone and my i-pad are still opened! You think it’s a common discus-

sion, don’t you? Yes, it is, and the advertisers use this new way of commu-

nication to be more efficient. A good ad combines spirit and emotions

which have to match up together. All the customers need today, is to be

entertained. Advertising has moved so far towards a more creative world,

Do not read this article. An ad for an ad…

Page 15: EF Chicago Newspaper

but there is a subtle nuance: seduce the customers with acumen and con-

vince with lightness. Even though a master part of this work is the freedom

of creativity, another one is to target the brain. Sometimes, creating an ad

comes under Art and Neurobiology. Yes. You are reading correctly.

Our brain is involved. Let’s highlight a famous leitmotiv coming from Leo

Burnett, a well known American advertising executive and the founder of the

Leo Burnett Worldwide, Inc. :

The main goal is to generate the desire with strategy. Here is the difficulty

for professionals, and here is the business “guidance” for the others.

A good example could be the current American presidential elections. It’s

not what you expected but it is also about advertisement. The main goal of

the candidates’ campaign is to find the best way to promote their product:

themselves! They talk about politics, the country, money, citizens, etc, BUT

all these topics are just “made-up”. The real purpose is to catch the citizens’

attention, catch their mind and say what they want to listen for. On the oth-

er hand, it could be completely different by using the strong method. In oth-

er words, the goal would be to shock the audience via a big stunt to make a

mark on everyone’s mind…some rich men particularly appreciate this way!

Finally, what if I had oriented your mind since the beginning of this article just

in order to get your attention ? … You were not obliged to read it. You did

it since you are here.

Welcome to the advertisement’s world. Welcome customers.

Welcome believers.

Holistic view and Problem Solving

By Meral Kaya — Editor Joanne Telser-Frere

W e always encounter a lot of problems in our daily life. For ex-

ample, when we get up in the morning, we decide on what to

wear. When we stand in front of our clothes closet, without

realizing it, we use math to calculate but we choose using a holistic view-

point . In recent years, the holistic viewpoint and as a problem-solving

method has began to be popular in business life. The method is an interest-

ing and logical way to find solutions. Some managers, leaders, and CEOs

have begun to use this method. They endorse it because they have compe-

tition, and this tool helps business people come up with creative, intelligent

and new solutions.

So, how we should look at the problem? The same way as realistic painters

(artists who try to recreate reality.) They use four basic rules of realistic

visual style. The choice then seems automatic. However first we must learn

each step individually. After that we can combine them.

Betty Edwards, in her book, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, explains

the four steps like this:

“Edges and lines (includes copying drawings and contour drawing exer-

cises)

Negative space (i.e. space between items)

Relationships (i.e. perspective and proportion between things)

Light and shadows (shading)

The whole: gestalt which emerges as the first four are taught” (1)

In history, many creative ideas and inventions began with small sketches.

Some examples here are by Galileo, Jefferson Faraday and Edison. Hennig

Nelms, “Thing With a Pencil”, Nevyork: Ten Speed Press 1981, p. xiv.

BUSINESS

F amily businesses are the most awesome, interesting and difficult

companies to manage. However, a family business is when more

than one member of the family is working in the company. Accord-

ing to Family Firm Institute “ Family Firms are those in which multiple mem-

bers of the same family are involved as major owners or managers, either

contemporaneously or over time”.

In my opinion, family businesses have a lot of problems inside , because

sometimes the members of the family do not know how to separate their

relationship from business relationship, for example, the second generation

thinks like their father is the head of the company they can do whatever

they want, for instance they might have a habit of leaving early or arriving

late, or they might waste company money on person expenses.

A long time ago a document existed where

family members can make agreements be-

tween them. These agreements need to be

related with how they can separate business

and family. As well this document can also

guide like decision like, if a member of a

family wants to enjoy the company he or she need to fulfil some require-

ments. Another example is that the company can not create a new work-

station for them. A lot of agreements existed that the members of family

business can use to guide its owner.

Nowadays family businesses are very important for the world Economy.

The FFI say that “An estimated 70%-90% of global GDP annually is created

by family businesses.”. As a result of this a lot of big companies like Ford,

Walmart, Volkswagen, BMW, Peugeot, Comcast, Continental, Christian

Dior are family business. They generate a lot of opportunities of jobs and

help the world economy to grow up.

If you have a family business, help it to grow.

Page 19: EF Chicago Newspaper

19

BUSINESS

Moreover, the FFI gives us some statistics about family business around the

world:

“Family firms account for 2/3 (two thirds) of all businesses around the

world (Interview with John Davis, Harvard Business School)”

“Between 50%-80% of jobs in the majority of countries worldwide are

created by family businesses (European Family Businesses, 2012)”

“85% of start-up companies are established with family money (European

Family Businesses, 2012).”

“In most countries around the world, family businesses are between 70

and 95% of all business entities (European Family Businesses, 2012)”

“65% of family businesses are looking for steady income growth over the

next five years (PWC, 2012)”

“Contrary to the popular image of modern corporations as being widely

held and run by professional managers, many of the world's firms contin-

ue to be controlled by families or the State (La Porta et. al.,Journal of

Finance, 1999) “

“Familial capitalism matters in most economies. However it matters in

different ways--depending on the context family firms can exhibit best

and worst practice ("History of Corporate Governance Throughout the

World," Morck and Steier, 2005)”

Family businesses are very important for us, for our economy to generate

jobs and the statistic the FFI mentioned. If you have a family business help it

to grow, do not try to lose it, it will be owned by future generations.

O ne of the reasons I moved from Chicago to San Francisco was to

study more about startups and tech companies. As a marketer,

social media enthusiast and business passionate, everything about

this universe fascinates me. Also, I want to invest my efforts in working in

this sector or perhaps run my own business.

I have been joining to lots of meetups and courses about this subject, but

nothing could compare to the Careers Beyond Borders, an event we had

at EF San Francisco on March 15th and 16th. Throughout these two days I

had the opportunity to get to know more not only about mature compa-

nies such as Airbnb, Snapchat, Google and

Salesforce, but also about startups.

The two most important things I learned

from those professionals were: Simplicity

everywhere and listen your customer. First

of all, simplicity, which was everywhere in

their product or website, during the cus-

tomer journey, hiring process, and conver-

sations with colleagues. Simplicity in all these

contact points with their audience really

matters. Second, always and forever listen

your customer. It is important to create a

product for your clients rather than you.

Customer opinion is the most important

thing before starting something new other-

wise you most likely will fail. I really admire

all these companies’ co-founders who create these huge companies solving

problems. Airbnb, for instance, was created by

Brian Chesky, Joe Gebbia and Nathan Blecharczyk. The first ones were

roommates in 2007, and they didn't have enough money to pay their rent.

Then, Joe thought to re-rent their apartment for three other designers who

were attending the Industrial Design Conference because all hotels in San

Francisco were full. Thus, was born AirBed & Breakfast. After, they changed

the name to the simple Airbnb. Obviously, after lots of failed pitch to inves-

tors, but this is another subject. Recently, Joe spoke at TED Talk in Vancou-

ver, check out his noteworthy talk.

During the panel with startups, it was important to know why people are so

interested in working in these kinds of companies and what exactly a startup

is all about. A startup is a company which isn't mature enough to be public,

or just start something new, or even is trying to improve something that al-

ready exist.

I'm still learning here. The next weeks I am going to visit some of these

startups and show you more inside the company. What is the most hired

position? How people work there?

In Addition, I am in touch with Dante Dicicco, Snapchat business develop-

ment, in order know more about: What has been Snapchat doing to reach

out new users and enhance their app?

See you folks!

Do you suffer from sneezing and coughing during certain times of the year? Yes_ _ No_ _

Are your nose and eyes itchy and runny during certain times of the year? Yes __ No __

I f you say yes to both questions, maybe you have seasonal allergies.

What are the most common triggers of seasonal allergies? Grass, pol-

len and mold are the most common triggers of these uncomfortable

allergies. Talking about our current country of residence, the Unites States,

spring allergies begin in February and end in the early summer.

There are many climate factors that can influence your symp-

toms:

Tree, grass and pollens are activated during cool nights and warm days.

Mold grows quickly in heat and high humidity.

Pollen levels increase in the morning hours.

Rain washes pollen away, but pollen can increase after rainfall.

On a day with no wind, allergens in the air are grounded.

When the day is windy and warm, pollen surges.

Seasonal allergies

Page 23: EF Chicago Newspaper

23

What can I do by myself to avoid or relieve the allergy symptoms?

You might think that pollen is causing your suffering, but other substances

may be involved as well. More than two-thirds of spring allergy sufferers ac-

tually have year-round symptoms. An allergist can help you find the source of

your suffering and stop it, not just treat the symptoms.

Additionally, here you have some advice:

Keep windows and doors shut at home and in your car during allergy

season.

Stay inside midday and during the afternoon, when pollen counts are

highest.

Take a shower, wash your hair, and change your clothes after you’ve

been working or playing outdoors.

Your allergist may also recommend one or more medications to control

symptoms. Some of the most recommended drugs are available without a

prescription. Others, including some nose drops, require a prescription. If

you have a history of prior seasonal problems, allergists recommend starting

…/… medications to alleviate symptoms two weeks before they are expected to

begin.

But, is there only that kind of “Seasonal Triggers”?

While the term “seasonal allergies” generally refers to grass, pollen and

mold, there is a different group of allergy triggers that are closely related to

particular seasons. Among them:

Smoke (campfires in summer, fireplaces in winter),

Insect bites and stings (usually in spring and summer),

Chlorine in indoor and outdoor swimming pools,

Candy ingredients (Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Easter),

Pine trees and wreaths (Thanksgiving to Christmas)

Moving to another climate to avoid allergies is usually not successful — aller-

gens are virtually everywhere. However, drinking more fluids could help thin

the mucus in your nasal passages and may give you some relief, plus hot liq-

uids add the benefit of steam. Keep your home and office clean, and clean

with ordinary products, like vinegar or baking soda, to avoid reactions to

harsh chemicals often found in cleaning products.

E veryone knows the movie ET Extraterrestrial, directed by Steven

Spielberg or another one called Alien, directed by Ridley Scott!

The common point about these movies is both talk about life out-

side our planet. Currently, you can hear several things about Extraterrestri-

als and flying saucers (the official term is UFO for "Unidentified flying ob-

ject").

You can definite the acronym as a mysterious object seen in the sky for

which no scientific explanation can be found, and is often supposed to be a

vehicle carrying extraterrestrials.

In the 1950's, the United States Air Force conducted 3 studies about uni-

dentified flying objects.

The most popular was Project Blue Book; it started in 1952, and it was the

third study after Project Sign in 1947 and Grudge in 1949.

Blue Book had two missions: the first was to determine if UFOs were a

threat to the USA, and second, to scientifically analyze data.

After collecting 13,000 UFO reports and analyses, the Blue Book team had

reported that there was no evidence to affirm that sightings categorized as

"unidentified" were extraterrestrial vehicles. Project Blue Bookended in

1969.

Everyone would like to discover national secrets! How about Area

51?

Area 51, or “Dreamland”, is a "secret" military base close to Las Vegas, Ne-

vada. It is also known as Groom Lake, named for the dry lake bed the mili-

tary base . Area 51 was opened in 1955 as a testing facility for spy planes

being developed by Lockheed Aircraft. Area 51 has since become a popular

symbol for the US government and aliens. Area 51 is supposedly where re-

covered alien spacecrafts are being tested and reversed engineered to learn

how they work. For example, the Physicist Bob Lazar has claimed he has

worked on alien spacecrafts at Area 51. Lazar says that nine alien saucers are

housed there to learn how they work.

Many theories talk about what's going on in Area 51 as the storage, examina-

tion, and reverse of crashed aliens and the manufacturing of aircrafts based

on alien technology. Meetings or joint undertakings with extraterrestrials,

the development of energy weapons, the development of means of weather

control or again the development of time travel and teleportation.

What about Aliens? Who are they? Real or Fake?

In 1954, the race of aliens, known as Greys from the Zeta Reticuli area in

space, who had been orbiting the equator, landed at Holloman Air Force

Base. They stated their planet was dying and needed quarters on earth to

conduct genetic experiments that might allow their race to survive; this in

exchange for certain technology.

President Eisenhower met with the aliens and a formal treaty was signed.

The treaty stated the aliens would not interfere in our affairs and we would

not interfere in theirs.

for the purpose of medical examination and monitoring, with the stipulation

that the humans would not be harmed, would be returned to their point of

abduction, and that the humans would have no memory of the event.

If you are scared about alien abductions? I have the solution for

YOU !

You don't have to fear. You can purchase an alien abduction insurance poli-

cy to cover this risk.

So, if you are abducted by one of those X-Files aliens and you never return

to Earth, your beneficiary will receive a sizable payout. Of course, your fam-

ily will have to prove that an extraterrestrial actually caught you, and I

know it's no easy task.

The Goodfellow Rebecca Ingram Pearson offers this surprisingly popular

Do you believe in UFO’s ?

As a matter of fact, they have sold a total of 30,000 policies. The company

even sold a $1,000 group alien abduction policy to the Heaven's Gate cult

shortly before their mass suicide. The company took a short break from sell-

ing these policies after the tragic event, but now the coverage is available

again.

Finally, every one of us is made up of atoms that were once part of an ex-

ploding star, including atomic carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen, which are some

of the fundamental ingredients for life.

Over billions of years, these ingredients form new stars and planets, which

means that the ingredients, and therefore the potential, for life beyond Earth

are scattered across the universe.

What's more, a number of recent discoveries also strongly suggest that alien

life exists, either in our own solar system or beyond.

The ultimate question isn’t, "Is there life beyond Earth?" but rather, "Will we

ever find it?"

T here is no perfect country, nor perfect culture. The media is more

interested in revealing the bad side of the stories, which I have

seen here, but I want to talk about the bright side of America and

the Awesome Americans.

Racism exists in this country, starting with Trump, but there are also non-

racists too. As a Hijabi, which is a title created by Muslim American girls to

refer to a person wearing a scarf to cover the hair, I almost never felt that I

was treated differently because I look different. I’ve actually been treated

better here than in some Muslim countries.

I was two years old when I first came to America with my parents. I was 22

the second time. During those 20 years, I lived in Saudi Arabia, but I was

living in the US through a TV screen, headphones and books. That’s why

America is in my comfort zone. I’m aware of the American culture.

On the other hand, Hollywood isn’t accurate. For example, Americans do

not throw up a lot as described in movies. I’ve been here for 11 months

and I haven’t seen a person throwing up, yet. It was accurate showing how

much Americans love hugs on a daily basis. Hollywood is accurate when it

shows that music and dancing are an important part of the American cul-

ture. It is expected that a week will not pass without you seeing Americans

dancing in a public places. I’m not talking about professional dancing; I’m

talking about spontaneous dancing.

The Awesome Americans

CULTURE

Page 31: EF Chicago Newspaper

31

I remember one day when I was in college, when the fire alarm rang, instead

of panicking, my two American professors started signing and dancing “Fire”.

I remember how hard we laughed.

I went to a professional conference in Chicago, with everyone wearing a for-

mal or a semi formal dress. Right after the lunch break, the conference hall

was transformed into a disco with loud music and Awesome Americans

dancing everywhere. I danced with them. Maybe I have an unconscious

American part.

In addition, I saw some of videos on YouTube showing teachers dancing to

students in their first day of school. Most importantly, The President of “the

greatest country in the world” called the United States of America entered

the stage dancing in Ellen Show. He also sent a video of himself holding a dis-

co ball and dancing in the President office in the White House. I guess it was

not weird when his wife danced on Uptown Funk song with a dance group in

a public event. It made sense for me when a Saudi group made a video with

Obama’s face dancing on a Saudi song.

Keith, maybe you should suggest a role to the immigration office which is:

immigrants must be able to spontaneously dance to be eligible for a Green

Card, and they “shall” be dancing in the emigration office to evaluate their

ability.

What inspired me to write this article was a remarkable gesture from Awe-

some Americans in EF. A gesture that showed the kindness, tolerance and

humanity of the Awesome Americans. It was the moment when EF American

staff transformed the small room into a prayer room for Muslim students. It

meant the world to us. Thank you Awesome Americans !!!

W hen you come to America, one of the most important things

is shopping! Do you agree? Because there are a lot of Ameri-

can brands, they are much cheaper here than in any other

countries, like Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, etc.

Discount season

The biggest clearance season occurs in November, Black Friday. This is

the best time to go shopping; all the shops on the street or in the outlets

have the biggest discount during the year. In the past, Black Friday of 2015, I

found that the last week before Black Friday already have the same price in

most of the stores, only a few of stores have an extra 20% discount for 3

days. So if you want to buy some clothes or shoes on Black Friday, in my

humble opinion, you’d better buy them the last week before Black Friday; it

is easier to find your size and more style of clothes to be chosen.

Also, some of the

stores have a dis-

count in March, with

the summer coming,

so this is a good

chance to change

some clothes too! You want to use the simple present here because it’s an

event that happens regularly, every year. In a month, on a specific date.

Outlet and discount stores in Chicago

Chicago Premium Outlets Mall:1650 Premium Outlets Boulevard, Aurora, Illi-

nois . With 120 stores to burn a hole in your wallet , you'll leave guilt free.

This is the most popular outlet in Chicago, but really far away, so it’s better

to have a car to drive there.

Let’s go shopping !

SHOPPING

Page 37: EF Chicago Newspaper

37

Fashion Outlets of Chicago: offers more than 130 stores and are only minutes

from O'Hare International Airport. (Blue line to Rosemont station, then take

the shuttle bus)

Nordstrom Rack, TJ-max, ROSS, Burlington and Macy’s discount place : there are

a lot of products that come from season clearance or the last piece of a fa-

mous brand, and some of them have really nice quality and a price that’s a

steal. If you are lucky, you can find some stuff which you were looking for

with an 80-90% off discount! Of course, you need more patience. Good luck!

Get the coupon: before you go shopping, maybe you can find some coupons

from the Internet, a newspaper, or flier. Sometimes they give you coupons

when you pay the bills, so be cautious about your receipt and the coupon.

Keep it well and be smart for your next purchase.

Jewelry and online shopping: if you want to buy some jewelry from Tiffany,

Cartier, BVLGARI, etc, and you have some friends who lived in other states

where there are not brand name shops, you can save up the tax! For exam-

ple, Iowa and Indiana states don’t have Bulgari, so if you can give the address

from those states, the shops can ship the stuff there without tax! The same

is true for online shops; if there are no shops in Illinois, like Rebecca, you can

order online from an official website with discount and without tax!

Other tips: before you pay the bill, ask the salesperson more. like “Hi, do you

have any discount for students or for registering?” You can get more dis-

counts than without asking.

Sign up to be a member of some shops because then they will send you ad-

vertisements and also coupons!

Don’t shop too much! Before you go shopping, have a look at your luggage.

It’s so hard to give up some stuff you bought but you cannot take back to

your country!

LIFE

U ndoubtedly, there is a certain problem when we refer to home-

lessness. Actually, it is hard for them to afford housing. Many

poor people are at risk of falling into homelessness. But, There is

no way to avoid seeing homelessness, especially when the Chicagoans are

walking on the street, taking a train or bus, or maybe just getting out your

house only for throwing trash.

Actually, it is difficult to accept that problem in the US. According to

“Street Wise Magazine” in Chicago, there are over 100,000 homeless peo-

ple living in the city including thousands of public school students in parks,

on the street, in abandoned building, or just in wherever place they can find

across Chicago.

Most probably you are not getting used to living with them, but you have

to, because it is real and common situation. Meanwhile, there are managers

who provide services shelters emergency, housing and support.

The events that can lead to homelessness:

Death of family member.

An unsolvable problem in Chicago

Page 39: EF Chicago Newspaper

39

Separations of family.

Broke up with your partner.

Job loss.

Untreated mental health problems.

Lack of health insurance for emergency or chronic illness.

These problems can build up over years until become in homeless.

As we all know there is a high price for homelessness and poverty, such as

increase in crime, demands for drugs, and illegal weapons, violence. Howev-

er, we can think of a better investment in the most precious resource: peo-

ple.

We have to think about it a little more, everyone is human and each one

deserves the quality life. It is not bad in give money to homeless people. In

fact is a fact of charity that in anytime we should to do. Even, if you do not

want to donate money, you might: give clothing, canned food, and toys to

children. If you are interested in donating, it relies on the generous support

of people homeless, allowing us to identify real needs in the neighborhoods.

Fortunately, there are organizations, such as: CCH (Chicago Coalition for

the homeless), Chicago Cares, All Chicago and city of Chicago.

There is another organization especially for children called Stand up for Kids.

It teaches youth the basic "life skills". They have the support necessary to be

safe and improve their education.

The donation by far is the most way fast, effective and safe to get involved in

this mission. Everything can you give will be good received. In order to be in

peace with ourselves and GOD.

SPORT

W ho hasn´t had it happen that when you come to live in a for-

eign country, you feel that everything is wonderful and you

want to be part of all the shows that the city offers you? Well,

that was how one day I decided to go with my friends to a Chicago Bull’s

game. In my opinion, this event is new because in Ecuador we don´t have

professional basketball teams, we just enjoy soccer but that's another story.

That day we were eager, but to wait for tickets took an eternity. As soon

as we had the tickets in our hands, we flew to take the blue line. Once

there, the pictures began together with the background of the beautiful

sunset that Chicago offered us.

The game was in United Center. It is a big place where the gate was easy to

miss us but our new skills in English helped us to find the correct gate.

All the people were so excited; everybody wore red, black, white, and gray

clothes. There were children that had written “Go Bulls” to cheering for

the team. I wanted to be part of the moment and three days before I

bought a Bull’s hat.

The game started and you could feel positive energy in the entire place. The

Bulls play so good and they have

a good defense but the Bucks

have the ability to score far from

the basket. For this reason the

points difference between the

Bulls and Bucks wasn´t so sizable.

Finally, the Bulls won the game

with 100 points and the Bucks

with 90 points.

The Legend in red

Page 41: EF Chicago Newspaper

41

I have to admit that I liked so much the Bull´s show; it was different. There

were people that had prepared a variety of choreographies. The game had

lights, music and fireworks were so amazing. There was the camera that

searches for you in the public and it had different categories, such as look

like another person, drawings of the children, etc. It was the same when I

watched American movies in my country.

I have talked about almost everything but I can´t forget Benny the Bull. He is

the crazy team mascot. He made his first official appearance at a Bulls game

in 1969. He is the main attraction for children and adults.

This guy is prepared to do whatever cheering

for the team and also entertains the audience

with each occurrence. From my perspective,

Benny likes to dance and make jokes, such as

spilling popcorn on people and flirting with the

Luvabulls. With this experience, today I under-

stand why in 2015 Benny won for the first

time as mascot of year. He dethroned The

Coyote who is the San Antonio Spurs mascot.

This game was one of the experiences that I

wanted to live. The next plan is to watch a

hockey game and baseball game. It's good to

learn about new sports when you live in a for-

eign country. Don´t forget that all these expe-

riences are best when you share with good friends and delicious food.

I know that there are more games and there are more teams that want to

win the game. You just make the decision and try to enjoy it because it is a

new experience that you´ll never regret.
