INSIDE THIS ISSUE

Our 52nd Year

2015 BARA DUES

BARA Dues for 2015 are $25 for an

individual member and $35 for a

family membership.

Please pay at a business meeting, kit

night, or mail to the Treasurer.

BARA Auction

Sunday, March 15, 2015

Now is the time to start thinking

about that equipment you don’t use

any longer. Dig it out, check it, out

and recycle it at the BARA auction.

The Bill James

Service Award

A couple of our newer BARA mem-

bers have asked: what is the Bill

James Service award?

Bill James was a former BARA pres-

ident, a mover and a shaker who

never stood still. Some of Bill's

many accomplishments include:

- Bill was the original trustee of our

club callsign K2BAR.

- Bill was instrumental in the for-

mation of BARA's VHF contest ac-

tivities and an active contributor and

participant for many years.

- Bill forged our initial relationship

with the Red Cross.

- Bill was a driver behind the crea-

tion of the first BARA website and

also of the transition from paper to

electronic distribution of the BARA

Bulletin.

Bill James gave freely of his

knowledge, skills, and time in ser-

vice to BARA over many years. Bill

James passed away on January 9,

2002. The BARA Executive Com-

mittee instituted the annual Bill

James Service Award to honor Bill's

memory and to recognize the efforts

and contributions of a current BARA

member. Each year the BARA Exec-

utive Committee chooses one BARA

member to recognize and honor for

their outstanding service to BARA.

(Continued on page 5)

Josephine Kehoe

WA2ZNT, SK

Josephine was a long time friend

of BARA. I first met her on the

79 repeater while commuting to

and from work. You could always

count on her for some cheer when

caught in a traffic jam on a rainy

day. She was always looking for

K2BAR in the VHF contests to

give BARA a point on FM.

Josephine or her operating skill

never gave it away, but she was

blind from birth.

She attended a BARA Field Day

in Oradell and I worked with her

on 15 Meters. She was so happy

making contacts that she did not

want to leave when her daughter

came to pick her up.

She passed away on December 4,

2014 at the age of 93.

Rest in piece Josephine.

Oh, did I mention she raised five

children and her husband was also

blind from birth. He travelled to

Brooklyn every day for work.

If you your life if hard, think of

Josephine and what she overcame.

Niko’s Chili Recipe Great dish of those cold Winter

days.

Ingredients

2-3 Lbs chopped meat

2 medium size onions

5-6 cloves garlic

2 Red peppers

2 green peppers

4-5 celery sticks

2 Tbsp dry parsley

2 cans stewed tomatoes

2 cans red beans drained

2 cans vegetarian beans

drained

3 Poblano or hot peppers

2 chili peppers chopped

2 Tbsp Chili Powder

2 Tbsp Paprika

Salt to taste 1 Tbsp

Preparation

Cut all the fresh ingredients to

small bite size pieces. Keep the

onions and garlic separated from

the rest of the ingredients.

In a large size pot heat some olive

oil and sauté the onions and garlic.

Add the chopped meat and contin-

ue to brown it up. Add the chili

powder and paprika to the chopped

meat. Keep working to separate

the chopped meat to the smallest

size you can. When the meat is

nice and brown add the chili sauce.

Run the stewed tomatoes through

the food processor and add to the

pot. Bring to a boil and keep stir-

ring the mixture. Add the remaining

ingredients, lower the flame to low

heat and simmer for 2 to 3 hours.

Keep stirring so as to prevent the

mixture from sticking to the bottom.

CROZET ISLANDS FT5W

Crozet Islands are a group of six islands, volcanic by origin, located in the South Indian Ocean. The islands are a French possession and declared a nature preserve in 1938. A research station has been established on the island which is staffed by 18 to 30 people depending on the season. The climate can range from 65 F in the summer to 23 F in the winter. The highest point is 3,580 ft. with a total area of 136 sq. mi. It rains on an avg. of 300 days a year.

The island is the home of four different species of penguins as well as elephant seals and many species of sea birds. Killer whales are often seen beaching themselves to prey on the seal popula-tion.

There have been several DXpeditions to Crozet over the years but Club Log has Crozet listed as #5 on the DX most wanted list.

We can look forward to some good DX this winter so keep watching the bands and updates.

Be on the look out for Navassa Is. K1N at the end of January. This entity is listed as #1 most wanted so there will many looking to put K1N in the log. Check the navassadx.com/ web site for updates.

By unanimous vote the 2014 Bill

James Service Award was given to

Richard Galbraith, K2ZB. Richard

was presented with a beautiful en-

graved plaque at the BARA 2014

Awards and Recognition dinner

thanking him for his contributions

to BARA not just over the past

year but for decades of service to

BARA.

Richard is an unstoppable force

always stepping up and volunteer-

ing for all of BARAs' activities.

Usually Richard is the first person

to show up at the BARA garage to

help in loading up for Field Day

and the VHF contests. Before the

sun comes up Richard is at our

Field Day site shooting antenna

lines over the light poles. Richard

is the go to guy for shooting anten-

na lines whether it's for Portable

Day or helping a new ham put up

his first antenna. While some of us

were participating in the last Fox

Hunt Richard was volunteering his

communication skills in support of

the Crop Walk public service

event. You can always count on

Richard, K2ZB, to get the job

done.

Congratulations Richard Galbraith,

K2ZB, recipient of the BARA

2014 Bill James service award!

(Continued from page 1) Thank you BARA

for the

Bill James Service Award

You could have knocked me over

with a feather when my name was

called at the BARA Holiday Din-

ner 2014. What have I done this

time?

Couldn’t think of a thing to say, but

lots to remember.

Bill needed an antenna installed in

his River Edge yard, so Tony

K2AMI and I went there. I only used

a bow and arrow then and the tree

for raising the antenna was about

150 foot away. And so I shot an ar-

row into the air and it looked like a

rocket launching without a smoke

trail. Tony had just purchased a 500

foot role of 1/8” Parachute cord for

home and friends use. Most of the

cord was used up on that shot. I

think Tony could not believe the

amount of cord used but it made Bill

a very happy camper. Bill was burn-

ing up the airwaves after that.

Sometime after that at a kit night

Bill with his tremendous sense of

humor took his cane in the air,

like a sword and bellowed out

TOUCHÉ. My weapon of choice

was a yardstick sitting on the ledge

of the blackboard. I can't remember

what the outcome was of the short

battle, but that little skirmish has

never exited my memory. The fol-

lowing morning came the sad news

of Bill’s passing. In a few days he

was buried in West Caldwell NJ.

One of his requests was to have an

HT buried with him. When Judi and

I pass there on the way to family

visits in West Caldwell I relive the

famed battle. Cane versus Yard-

stick.

In my Radio room on the wall

where it can't be missed when you

enter is the Bill James Service

Award plaque where it will be dis-

played for all to see when they visit

here.

I want to thank the BARA club for

this award and all that wish to see it

must make an appointment first hi

hi.
