Purpose StatementVA requires all healthcare personnel, health care Interns included, to take approximately 40 hours of mandatory training. Outcome/ObjectivesAfter completing this independent study, participants will be able to:

1. list VA customer service principles;2. describe the most common medical illnesses and mental health issues associated with

military service, including the signature injury of OIF/OEF Veterans;3. explain the core principles of current VA trainee supervision guidelines;4. identify the principles of computer and data security, including encryption, password

protection, authorized use of computers, and data transmission/usage including appropriate use of thumb drives, laptops, email and text messaging;

5. identify what constitutes a violation of privacy/confidentiality and how to prevent them (emal, text messaging, fax, computer screen, printers, telephone conversation, and hallway conversation), as well as, how to report violations;

6. describe the trainee’s role in responding to a fire or other emergency;7. describe your role in preventing harm to patients;8. recall that acceptance of gifts or favors are restricted by federal government ethics policy;9. explain the importance of timely documentation and the need to assure that there are no

incomplete health recored entries prior to the end of the trainee’s rotation or training period;

10. describe how to handle a patient who is manifesting potentially violent or disruptive behavior, and the importance of knowing the physical are of work and its avenues of escape if needed;

Statement of ParticipationA certificate of completion will be awarded to participants and accreditation records will be on file in the VA Talent Management System (TMS). For all VA TMS users, completion certificates will be available in the Completed Works section of your VA TMS account. Non-VA TMS account holders will be provided a copy of their completion certificate via Email.

Report of TrainingIt is the program participant’s responsibility to ensure that this training is documented in the appropriate location according to his/her locally prescribed process.

All prospective faculty and planning committee members participating in an EES activity must disclose any relevant financial interest or other relationship with: (a) the manufacturer(s) of any commercial product(s) and / or provider(s) of commercial services discussed in an educational presentation, and (b) any commercial supporters of the activity.
