Reporting natural gas combustion
2015-2016 reporting period
This user guide is based on the EERS instructional videos available on the Clean Energy Regulator’s website at http://www.cleanenergyregulator.gov.au
Welcome to this series of guides on the Emissions and Energy Reporting System (EERS).

In this guide, you will learn how to report the combustion of gaseous fuels in EERS.
This example will show you how to report the combustion of natural gas for stationary use but the steps described can also be used for the reporting of other fuels.
GPO Box 621 Canberra ACT 2601 1300 553 542 [email protected] www.cleanenergyregulator.gov.au 3
To begin, select the facility you are entering data for.
GPO Box 621 Canberra ACT 2601 1300 553 542 [email protected] www.cleanenergyregulator.gov.au 4
The following screen summarises the activity data that has already been recorded for the facility.
To add additional data, click on the ‘Add Activity’ button.
GPO Box 621 Canberra ACT 2601 1300 553 542 [email protected] www.cleanenergyregulator.gov.au 5
You can provide a description for the activity in the ‘Activity Description’ field.
This description is for your own reference.

When reporting fuel combustion, you will need to report the source category, source and activity type relating to the fuel being used.
Start by selecting ‘Fuel Combustion’ for the ‘Source category’.
GPO Box 621 Canberra ACT 2601 1300 553 542 [email protected] www.cleanenergyregulator.gov.au 7
For the source, select ‘Stationary and Transport energy purposes (excluding electricity generation)’.
GPO Box 621 Canberra ACT 2601 1300 553 542 [email protected] www.cleanenergyregulator.gov.au 8
For activity, select ‘Emissions released from combustion of gaseous fuels –Stationary energy purposes.’
GPO Box 621 Canberra ACT 2601 1300 553 542 [email protected] www.cleanenergyregulator.gov.au 9
Next, select the fuel that is being combusted.
In this example, item 17, Natural gas distributed in a pipeline has been selected.
GPO Box 621 Canberra ACT 2601 1300 553 542 [email protected] www.cleanenergyregulator.gov.au 10
The criteria for measurement will depend on how you acquire and measure the amount of fuel combusted.
In this example, Criteria A is selected reflecting that measurement is based on invoices.
GPO Box 621 Canberra ACT 2601 1300 553 542 [email protected] www.cleanenergyregulator.gov.au 11
EERS will present you with an option to select the Default Energy Content factor for the combusted fuel or calculate your own.
In this example, the default has been selected.
The next step will be to enter the amount of fuel combusted. This amount can be entered in cubic metres or gigajoules.
GPO Box 621 Canberra ACT 2601 1300 553 542 [email protected] www.cleanenergyregulator.gov.au 12
Since the default method for measurement is being used in this example, select ‘Method 1’ from the method drop down menu.
See the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (Measurement) Determination 2008 for a description of available Methods.
GPO Box 621 Canberra ACT 2601 1300 553 542 [email protected] www.cleanenergyregulator.gov.au 13
Repeat the previous step to calculate the emissions of Methane.
GPO Box 621 Canberra ACT 2601 1300 553 542 [email protected] www.cleanenergyregulator.gov.au 14
And again for the emissions of Nitrous Oxide.
Once all the data has been entered, click on the ‘Save’ button. EERS may display a validation message if any of the fields have not been filled in correctly.
Otherwise, the activity details will be saved.

Your reported activity will appear on the Activities and Emissions page.
If you wish to edit or remove a particular activity, select the appropriate function from the Action menu.
This concludes the guide on how to report gaseous fuel combustion in EERS.
