1 Introduction

1.1 Product Description

The ComCC 1250m Modem Data Multiplexer is a flexible I/O–driven toolfor broadcast data routing and Closed Captioning. ComCC 1250m pro-vides a powerful center of operations for a wide variety of key caption-ing–related needs for broadcasters and their data providers.

The Modem Data Multiplexer features two independent channels fordial-up caption input. It has 8 outbound TCP/IP connections that canbe used to forward 608 caption commands and data to any listeningserver. Smart Encoder command filtering is also available, allowing youto forward only raw 608 caption data. The ComCC 1250m also features4 outbound RS-232 serial connections that can be used to route incom-ing 608 caption commands and data.

The ComCC 1250m can be configured from the user-friendly DashBoardsoftware, which is available for Windows, Mac and Linux operating sys-tems.

2 Installation

2.1 Back Panel

The ComCC 1250m rear panel is shown below, followed by a guide tothe connectors located there.

3 DashBoard Configuration

The DashBoard software is used to administer the cards in your openGearframe. Once you have successfully installed the DashBoard tool, openthe program to configure your card and obtain status information.

There are two main sections in the DashBoard interface: the left sidecontains status information, while the right side contains configurablesettings. On the right, there are four tabs at the top which can be usedto select between the configuration subsections: Setup, TCP/IP, Serial,and Upgrade.

Additionally, there are four general-purpose buttons at the bottom ofthe DashBoard window. The Refresh button updates the fields in Dash-Board to reflect the card’s current state. The Upload button enablesyou to apply a software update file to the card’s DashBoard interface.The Reboot button has no effect; cards should be rebooted by removingand re-inserting them into the frame. The Close button closes the framecard interface.

3.1 System Setup

3.1.1 Networking

IP AddressSets a fixed network address for the unit on yourLAN.

Subnet MaskThe subnet mask should be set to match the bitmask used on your LAN.

GatewayThe gateway should be set to the address of thecomputer or device that the unit will use to com-municate outside of your local network.

3.1.2 Channel Status

Modem Status

Displays the status of the dial-up modem on therespective channel. Possible values: Connected,when a captioner has successfully dialed into themodem; Ringing, when there is an incoming callon that modem; and On-hook otherwise.

Service Status

Displays the status of services required forproper multiplexer operation on the respectivechannel; Active indicates that the multiplexerservice is on and Inactive indicates that it hasbeen turned off.

Restart ButtonRestarts the multiplexer services on the respec-tive channel; this should only be used during atechnical support sequence.

Stop ButtonStops the multiplexer services on the respectivechannel; this should only be used during a tech-nical support sequence.

3.2 TCP/IP

This section allows you to configure up to eight TCP/IP socket outputsto which incoming caption data can be forwarded.

IP AddressThe network address of the socket connection tobe established.

PortThe TCP/IP port of the socket connection to beestablished.

Input ChannelThe modem input channel that is the source fordata forwarded to this socket.

Data Filtering

Determines whether Smart Encoder commandsshould be filtered from modem input or retained.If your output is being sent to a caption encoder,filtering should be disabled; if you are insteadfeeding a device that requires “608 caption data”,filtering should be enabled.

EnableEnables a connection at the respective IP addressand port.

StatusDisplays the status of the respective socket con-nection.

3.3 Serial

This section allows you to configure up to four RS-232 serial outputs towhich incoming caption data can be forwarded.

Input ChannelThe modem input channel that is the source fordata forwarded to this serial port.

Speed (Baud) The speed at which the serial port communicates.

Character Size The number of data bits per character.

Stop Bits The number of stop bits per character.

Parity Determines the port’s parity-checking protocol.

Enable Enables output on the respective serial port.

Flow control is disabled.

3.4 Upgrade

This section allows you to upgrade the ComCC 1250m’s software throughthe USB flash port located at the front of the card.

File NameThe base file name of the upgrade file to be ad-ministered; this must be located in the root direc-tory of your flash drive.

Upgrade Button Prompts you to confirm the upgrade request.

Upgrade Status Displays the status of the upgrade process.

A Troubleshooting

Q) I enabled a socket connection, but the data isn’t passing through.A) After clicking the Enable checkbox, wait a few seconds until you seethe LED status indicator turn green. Only then will the 608 data betransferred.Also, make sure you are using the correct ComCC 1250m channel foryour connection.Finally, check the modem status for that channel (under the Setup tab)and make sure that it is Connected; if it is not, the captioner shouldhang up and dial in again.

Q) I enabled a socket connection, but the LED status indicator is notturning green.A) Make sure you are using the correct IP and port settings for that par-ticular connection. If you are certain that you are, contact the serveradministrator. It is possible that the server is temporarily down, or isblocked behind a firewall.It is also possible that your network settings on the ComCC 1250m areinaccurate. In Dashboard, under the Setup tab, please make sure yourIP address, subnet mask, and gateway address are set correctly.You can also try disabling the connection, waiting a few seconds, andthen re-enabling it. If that doesn’t work, click the restart button for theComCC 1250m service on that connection’s channel.

Q) I enabled a serial port connection, but the data isn’t passing through.A) Make sure you are using the correct ComCC 1250m channel for yourconnection, and that the serial port settings you have entered in Dash-Board match those of the equipment to which the serial port’s output isbeing sent.You can also try disabling the connection, waiting a few seconds, andthen re-enabling it. If that doesn’t work, click the restart button for theComCC 1250m service for that connection’s channel.Also, check the modem status for that channel (under the Setup tab)and make sure that it is Connected; if it is not, the captioner should

hang up and dial in again.

Q) The captioner cannot connect to the modem on the ComCC 1250m.A) Identify the modem channel that the captioner is trying to dial into,and then click the restart button for the ComCC 1250m service for thatchannel. The ComCC 1250m service for that channel must be runningin order for the captioner to be able to dial into that channel.
