LAKE FOREST’SREMOTE
LEARNING PLAN
OVERVIEW
In response to the public health threat of COVID-19, the Lake Forest School District (LFSD) has created the
following remote learning plan, which outlines our commitment to ensuring that each and every one of our
students can remain engaged in learning via remote methods, while our school buildings are closed. Families can
learn more about LFSD’s response to the COVID-19 health crisis, and find a variety of resources and supports, at
www.lf.k12.de.us.
During the first week of closure, our focus was to develop the LFSD Remote Learning Framework while ensuring
that children had access to nutritious meals and that all of our schools were thoroughly cleaned and sanitized. We
also recognized that the shift to remote learning would be an adjustment for our school community. Our staff
members, students and families eased into remote instruction utilizing simple, manageable assignments with a
focus on practice, review and enrichment.
Throughout our now extended school closure, LFSD teachers will continue to provide students with instruction
that is designed to build upon the learning trajectory already established in the classroom. They will do so using
the remote learning options identified in this plan.
Instructional methods will vary according to a teacher’s preference, comfort-level, and grade-level/subject matter.
A teacher-led hybrid instructional model includes printed learning materials and online student learning
opportunities (e.g., live classroom instruction with the student’s teacher, recorded instruction).
4/30/2020 5
LAKE FOREST’SREMOTE
LEARNING PLAN
SUPPORT CONTINUOUS REMOTE INSTRUCTION
LFSD is committed to providing students/ families who need assistance in obtaining a technology device. Families still inneed of remote learning technology may contact the building administration to discuss technology needs.
PROVIDE BEST PRACTICES AND RESOURCES TO EDUCATORS
District leadership continues to collaborate with teachers to ensure that they have access to remote learning resourcesand supports to assist them in creating remote lesson plans. In addition, LFSD is providing staff with access toprofessional development, and digital access to other helpful resources. The staff website provides teachers with guidedsupport videos on topic such as how to set up a Zoom account, along with other remote learning resources.
INTERPRETATION SERVICES FOR FAMILIES
Communication with families is critical. Family members who are not proficient in English will be provided, at a minimum, telephonic interpretation provided at no charge.
ATTENDANCE
Teachers will not be taking traditional attendance during the school closure, but will continue to monitor student
participation which will look like:
Student task completion.
Student check-in with their teacher.
Student participation in a “live” or recorded virtual class session.
Student posts in digital platforms, engagement during teacher check-ins and other points of connection.
LFSD administration, counselors and teachers will continue efforts to reach out to families when students are not
engaging in learning opportunities.
4/30/2020 6
LAKE FOREST’SREMOTE
LEARNING PLAN
GRADING
LFSD’s remote learning plan focuses on student learning, not grades. During this closure, LFSD is approaching
grades with a “hold harmless” plan where grades will not be lower than the end of third marking period. We
encourage all students and parents to see the value in learning and preparing for the next level course work
without the additional pressure of grades. We realize that some students, teachers and parents may struggle to
engage in this type of learning as it is very different from our traditional approach to teaching and learning. We all
will continue to give our best effort to make the most of remote learning. In order to be equitable to all of our
students, assignments are for learning opportunities and will be graded “completed” or “not completed”.
Communication and feedback concerning assignments will provide understanding and growth for students. The
final grading for the 4th Marking Period will be Pass/Fail. However, the final cumulative grade will be numerical.
THIRD MARKING PERIOD
The third marking period will end on May 8, 2020 for students Grades PreK – 11 and May 29, 2020 for Seniors. All
students will have through May 8, 2020 to make-up assignments that were assigned prior to March 13, 2020.
REPORT CARDS
For Grades PreK – 11, the 3rd Marking Period report cards will be mailed home on May 21, 2020 and the 4th Marking
Period report cards will be mailed home on June 17, 2020.
Seniors will receive their report cards with their diploma.

LAKE FOREST’SREMOTE
LEARNING PLAN
FINAL EXAMS
Final exams will not occur this year.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT

expectations. They should also log into their College Board accounts to access additional information.
DUAL ENROLLMENT & CREDIT RECOVERY
Dual enrollment work will continue to be graded, in collaboration with colleges and universities. Credit recovery classes
will proceed as normal.
SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRESS UPDATES/BENCHMARKS

Period Progress Update will be sent at the end of the school year.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

LAKE FOREST’SREMOTE
LEARNING PLAN
SPECIAL EDUCATION GUIDANCE
According to Federal guidance from the U.S. Department of Education and Delaware Department of Education, if a
district closes its schools to slow or stop the spread of COVID-19, and continues to provide educational opportunities to
general education student populations, the schools must ensure that students with disabilities also have equal access to
the same opportunities. Included in this requirement, schools must implement the IEP of a student with a disability to the
greatest extent possible.
Services and supports within the IEP are provided through direct instruction via virtual platform or tele-conference as well
as indirect services such as emails, phone calls, material development and family support. School teams are collaborating
with parents to schedule remote IEP services designed to support student learning and maintain skills. Special education
teachers and related service providers are using many of the same technology platforms to deliver services as general
education teachers. IEP teams are facilitating virtual IEP team meetings using Zoom and tele-conference. Additionally,
school psychologists and related services staff are working to complete educational evaluations to the greatest extent
possible. If an in-person assessment is needed, IEP teams are communicating with families about assessment needs and
postponement of evaluation until in-person assessment is safe. Parents should direct questions about their child’s special
education services to the case manager, related service provider(s), and then to the school principal.
For related services such as therapies and counseling, the specialist staff from each school will be providing a combination
of family education/consultation as well as direct services via Teletherapy. If your child has Speech, Occupational and/or
Physical Therapy services, families will be contacted by the therapist to schedule individualized services. For children who
require counseling services or other specialized support, the specialist staff will be in contact with families to discuss needs
and schedule support.

LAKE FOREST’SREMOTE
LEARNING PLAN
REMOTE LEARNING EXPECTATIONS
The goal of LFSD’s remote learning plan is to keep children engaged so they can learn and grow, while also
affording them with meaningful opportunities for connection and community. LFSD educators will provide
opportunities for students to read, write, share ideas, explore, create, play, and move. Most importantly, LFSD will
continue to provide students with a sense of community and normalcy within their school day that continues the
planned learning program.
Student participation might look like:
Student task completion.
Student check-in with their teacher.
Student participation in a “live” or recorded virtual class session.
Student posts in District-approved digital platforms, as directed by the teacher, engagement during teacher
check-ins and other points of connection.
Students should complete their assignments being mindful of taking brain breaks, which ideally includes physical
activity and/or exercise. As always, faculty and administrators are available via email to schedule a conversation.
Students are expected to be courteous and respectful online and adhere to LFSD’s technology code of conduct.
Students should take turns, contribute, and ask questions in class discussions. The remote learning experience
will not be a 7.5 hour day.

LAKE FOREST’SREMOTE
LEARNING PLAN
TEACHER PLANNED ON-DEMAND LEARNING
A model of instruction that can occur at any time – students independently self-pace their learning once
teachers share the resources. Families can help to determine the home schedule for daily learning time.
Teachers may create and send pre-recorded videos to describe the lesson and learning outcomes.
Teachers curate and provide materials digitally (e.g., videos, assignments from district materials or
supplemental materials) which students work on independently and submit.
TEACHER-LED VIRTUAL “LIVE” LEARNING
This instruction takes place in “real-time.”
Teachers may design the sequence of learning based on where they left off and what their students are
working on. This may take the form of a small group or whole group activity.
Teachers will provide instructional resources and materials through remote means utilizing Zoom,
Schoology, Class Dojo or other approved platforms unless otherwise indicated by a teacher. All staff have
access to district-supplied remote learning materials as well as professional development supporting remote
learning best practices.
Teachers have the opportunity to participate in multiple professional learning sessions in their content areas
as well.
4/30/2020 11
SUPPORTING
REMOTE
LEARNING
PARENTS AND STUDENT COMMUNICATION
Parent and student communication will primarily occur through email, Class Dojo, Remind and other district-approved
platforms, and/or by phone.
Teachers will set office hours to connect with students and families to support their learning remotely.
Parents are encouraged to use office hours as an opportunity to discuss their child’s progress with the staff.
Parents should encourage their child to actively participate in the remote learning.
Please know that we are here for you and your families. We miss seeing your children every day and cannot wait until we are
back in the classrooms and in special activities with them again.
LAPTOP COLLECTION
Each school will notify families of the schedule to return the laptops to the respective building. If laptops are not returned,
families will be billed the cost of replacing the device.
SCHOOL INSTRUCTION MATERIAL COLLECTION
Each school will notify families of the schedule to return the school instruction materials to the respective building.
RETRIEVAL OF PERSONAL BELONGINGS
Each school will notify families of the schedule for retrieving the student’s personal belongings.
PLEASE NOTE
