Introspection
Bachpan (childhood) is the most happy, carefree and beautiful part of one’s life. At the same vein it is
equally vulnerable, sensitive and formative segment of life. Parents, guides, elders and social workers
like us need to understand that “A child needs to be happy than famous or intelligent.”
Recognizing this challenging need of the hour we designed our staff training to create a very positive
aura to make sure no child faces any kind of threatening situation inside or outside of our centre.
Though the trainers were not very high profile experts, we engaged a grass root NGO from ALWAR,
which has truly made a difference in the lives of underprivileged children in 200 villages in Rajasthan
making love, compassion, care and freedom their central theme while interacting with children.
It’s important to begin the day right. Now we have chosen three magic words for our children, these are
“queens” for the girls, “kings” for the boys and “it’s ok” when they commit any mistake. The teachers’
behavior has softened and sweetened drastically after this wonderful training and effects are quite
visible on the children’s behavior. We have learned “By unlocking our true humanity. We can awaken to
our true potential”.
In Aesop’s Fables there is the tale known as “The king’s son and the Painted Lion: it tells of an aging
monarch and his intrepid son who has a passion for hunting. Having seen the prince killed by a lion in a
dream, the father-believing that the dream was an omen of what to come-built a palace and forced the
led to live within its confines to consol his son. However, the king had the walls painted with various
animals.
The prince yearned in anguish for freedom. One day he stood before a painted lion and cried out:
“because of you and my father’s dream, I find myself imprisoned in this wretched place! Furious and
frustrated he raised his hands and repeatedly struck at the painting only to hurt him badly. Sometime
later prince collapsed and lost his life.
While this is merely a fable, it can serve as a lesson that is relevant to our worlds today.
When striving to make our children happy, it is essential to nurture freedom of expression and courage
in them without transferring our own fears in the name of experiences.
May every child enjoys happiness and freedom. May every teacher lead them to a life of triumph.

dreams.
The preparation for “Bal Utsav” started 15 days before, various duties and responsibilities were
distributed among staff and volunteers to make this program successful. Invitation cards were
prepared, and mailed to all the guests one week prior.

Health Awareness Mela
Date:- 30-12-2017
Vanue:- ISST, Saathi Centre police Station Kalyanpuri
Time :- 10:30 to 2:00 pm
Topic :- Health awareness on different Health issues and violence against children.
-
Introduction and Planning: - ISST community centre works in Kalyanpuri. Kalyanpuri is a resettlement
colony and has slums as well. Many children daily commute to ISST, saathi centre for study, library and
computer learning etc. All children who come at Saathi Centre belong to vulnerable community or
unprivileged families. Most of the children don’t have a good food habits due to busy schedule of their
parents. Apart from that children face violence like parental beating, abusing, and bad language used by
parents at home and teachers at schools also sometimes use disrespectful language. We got shocked
when a 5 years old child, Pooja, the student of Bachpan died due to brain TB. Her parents couldn’t
recognize the sickness of the girl. Within a month the girl died after reorganization of disease.
The incident worried us about the health of children. So Saathi centre decided to organize a health
awareness fair for the students and parents also.
For the health fair we collected some posters from different govt. dispensaries and hospitals.
Some health related games were kept for the children.
A doctor and a psychologist were called for the health fair.
Material used:- Posters, tents, colours, chart papers, pencils, prizes, gram, moong dal for sprauts etc.
Participants:- 170 children and 100 parents
Process of the day:-
The fair started at 10:30 am and closed up at 2:00pm. The aim of the fair was to aware the parents and
children about the good food habits and bad effects of beating and abusing (especially by parents).
Children prepared group presentations on different diseases like TB, Malnutrition, dengue, etc.
In presentation 1st child represented disease, the 2nd causes, 3rd became symptoms, and 4th effects and
the 5th
represented precautions. They presented their presentations one by one in front of parents and
resource persons. Parents were happy to look their children in these appearances. The aim of that
activity was to aware the parents about those disease in humorous way, so that parents could
understand the harms of disease and did not get bore. After that two short movies on hand wash habit
and food habit showed.
After that the first resource person (Dr. Neelu Shrivastav) talked with the parents about the food which
they provide their children in their meals especially in breakfast. Most of the parents told that they
provide biscuits, Rusk, fan (made by white flour), bread, tea etc in breakfast. The resource person
advised the parents that they should give sprouted moongdal, kala chana, any fruit, peanuts, gud
(jaggery), Parantha (stuff and plain), baked bread or toast or sandwich with vegetable etc. shouldn’t sent
the child with empty stomach. After that resource person discussed about the hygienic habits and
menstruation hygiene and about the habit of Hand wash.
Before starting the next session a short movie on violence against child showed to the parents.
-
After the movie, psychologist (Dr. JP Malik) talked with the parents about beating habits of parents and
violence against the child. The resource person performed an activity to the parents. And discussed the
following points:-
1. How many parents never beat his/her child in their life?
2. When and why they beat their children?
3. Can there be other options instead of beating?
4. How should we avoid/stop beating and violence against children?
5. What are the bad effects of beating and violence?
6. How can we become good and supporting parents? Etc.
Both sessions were especially for the parents.
There were many activities for the children like:-
-
For group “A” students there was a poster competition. The title of the poster competition was “Ways to live a healthy life”.
For group B there was another activity. A poster of body prepared and children were called one by one and told them to find out the correct name of body part from the cards and keep it on
the poster on the correct place or part in a stapled time period.
For the students of group C there was a handmade puzzle game. For the game children called one by one and asked to complete the puzzle in a stapled time.
After the completion of the activities prizes were distributed for the 1st,2
nd and 3
rd positions.
For the healthy refreshment, we prepared sprouted chat of moong dal and kala chana.

Staff and volunteers Capacity Building Workshop
Date:- 27th
January-2018
Time:-10:00am to 5:00pm
Theme:- Fearless learning and teaching methodology
Venue:- ISST, Habitat Centre , Lodhi Road
Planning:- ISST, Saathi centre organizes staff and volunteer strengthen workshop every year.
ISST believes that if different trainings are provided time to time to the staff and volunteers, it
refreshes and further strengthens their capabilities to rectify the flaws while interacting with
children. Although the staff of Saathi centre is very experienced and they know the innovative
ways of teaching. Many innovative activities have been designed for the children with time. But
refreshing and brushing up time to time especially for new volunteers and trainees is
-
important. When we take part in a workshop or training we get refreshed and discussing our
methods or techniques of work with others and also learning from others makes us more wise
and effective. We invited Mr. Noor Mohamad and Sangeeta as a resource person from
“AMIED”(Alwar Mewat Institute of Education and Development) organization. Amied is working
in Alwar district of Rjasthan from 25 years with children of marginalized families and govt.
schools.
Participants:- 12
Process of the day
The theme of the workshop was fearless learning and teaching methodology. Hence we all
know and always talk about fearless learning, but some time when we get frustrated or
irritated, without any negative intention we shout at the children, unaware about their
emotional condition and problems they might be facing. Sometime this type of behavior
creates fear in children. Children in our country generally face fear in their homes, schools,
surrounding. So it is a serious matter to think about removing this fear factor from their minds.
The day started with a prayer, sung by the resource person. After that there was a
introduction round and the introduction of work. After that resource person gave papers to the
participants and asked them to write their problems which they face during teaching.
Participants wrote many things like:- children don’t sit for a long time, they gossip and disturb
others, they play during the class, go to washroom again and again and do not concentrate.
Resource person discussed many reasons for this type of behavior:-
1. It could be possible child was not well.
2. There was any problem in his/her house.
3. He/she did not like subject.
4. He/she could be good in other activity or subject.
5. There was any problem within his/her group etc.
After that resource person turned to other activity. She divided the participants in two groups
and gave one topic to each:- what teacher does and why child goes to school?
Both groups prepared their presentation and presented it before others. They discussed about
their topic which they got.
After lunch the next session started. ISST, Saathi centre team sang a song to get refresh.
Resource person divided the participants in three groups and gave different case studies to
each and told them to give answers of question which have been provided below the case
-
study. After the presentation of case study a long discussion was held about teaching
methodology.
The workshop closed with sharing some case studies of Saathi Centre’s children.
Outcome of training:
Concept of fear free learning and positive discipline: punishment is counterproductive for potential learning.
• Awareness about the lifelong impact of fearless learning.
• Participants could learn various forms of teaching methods.
• Could learn use of positive discipline techniques.
• Saathi Centre is all set to develop an action plan to implement this idea of fearless learning.

Group-C selected an innovative
activity to teach the students
new words and improve their
mathematical skills for the
period August-2017 to January-
2018. Children knew about the
train because they travel in it
when they go to their home
village, but they did not know
the functions like:- buying
tickets, getting on and off, when
should one pull the chain etc.
This activity improved
their mathematical
skills; they learnt the
name of stations in
both languages Hindi
and English, learnt
transaction of money.
They got to know the
value of team work etc.
Children enjoyed the
activity. It improved

Parents’ teacher dialogues
Month Highlights Impacts
-
February-2017 to
January-2018
Total twelve parents’ teacher
dialogue meetings had been
conducted during the year. It was
the other main activity of ISST,
Saathi centre.
If we wish to develop or improve
good reading and writing skills,
learn to respect others, hygiene
and other good habits in children
we may not succeed without the
help of parents because a child
lives with us only for two to three
hours but he lives with his
parents whole day so we can’t
reach to a satisfactory level
without parents support. ISST,
saathi Centre always believes
that without access/approach to
family we can’t change the
community. So parents teacher
dialogue is a bridge between the
centre and community.
The aim of PTD was to aware the
parents about the improvement
in children. From this year Xth
board exams have returned. It
has made the parents more
anxious, conscious and alert
about the study. They come
time to time to know about the
progress of their children. They
send their children on time and
regularly. They feel happy after
looking at the progress behavior
change of their child.
Other activities
Activities Highlights Impacts
RTI Help –Desk An RTI help desk runs at Saathi
Centre full day. Total 85 people
assisted for different reasons like
complaints, cast certificates,
income certificates, open school
admissions. Ews admissions etc.
total 32 RTIs were written during
the year.
People of community wander
here to there for writing their
complaints. They don’t have any
place to find out the solutions of
their problems. RTI Help- Desk
provides support to the
community. Now people know
about the Saathi Centre and they
visit us to get advice when they
encounter any problem like:-
-
family dispute , police
harassment, school admissions ,
to write complaints, to fill
different forms, to write RTI etc.
Library activity Many schools have their own
library but they don’t issue
books to the students.
Students wander here to there in
search of the syllabus books and
also story books, fiction and
competition books. ISST, Saathi
Centre has set up the library
with the motive that students
can find their books at one place
and continue their study without
any break. Now the ISST, saathi
centre has around 550 members
with 4200 book. Some books
were bought while some have
been donated.
The library is run by the
volunteers. The houses in the
community are very small and
don’t have space for studying, so
children move to Saathi Centre’s
library because they know that
this is a safe place to study
especially for girls as they can
get books and study here easily.
NIOS and EWS admission 35 NIOS admissions, 10 EWS
registration forms and 5 DU
registration forms were filled
during the year.
In community there are many
cyber cafes and coaching centres
that charge big amount of
money to fill any form especially
for NIOS. They charge double or
triple. Now they know that the
staff and volunteers of saathi
centre can fill their forms and
provide right guidance to them.
Self defense training Two short terms self-defense
trainings were organized with
the help of Delhi Police ( March
and September-2017). Total 100
girls took part in self defense
workshops.
Girls became more confident
and aware about their self-
respect and after this training
they started to face eve-teasers
boldly.
Visit to WiproCares Noida WIPROCARES Noida organizes a
run of sprit every year for its
team members. Children of
Saathi Centre have been invited
for the last two years. This year
the run was organized on 17th
September-2017. Total 12
students with three volunteers
and one staff visited to Wipro
Cares Noida. Children presented
many cultural programs and a

Children learnt many things
during the visit like:-Decent
behavior, event management,

street play there. Prizes were
given to the children..
Photography workshop ISST Saathi centre believes that
there should be atleast one
vocational skill in adolescent
children’s hand so that they can
earn some for their regular
expenses. In that series ISST,
Saathi Centre organized two
weeks photography workshop
for the students.
Children were very enthusiastic
to learn photography with DSLR
camera. Some of them have
decided to learn more advance
photography.
Summer camp ISST, Saathi Centre organizes
Summer every year with the aim
to engage the children in
different activities during their
summer holidays. Because due
to long vacations children roam
here to there and may get
exposed to many negative
activities like smoking and drugs,
stealing things and fightings etc.
ISST, saathi centre tries to
engage them in some
constructive work. This year it
was organized from 11th May to
28th June-2017.
Around 170 children participated
in summer camp. Children spent
their full day at Saathi centre and
got away from wandering. They
participated in theatre, dance,
and learnt to make many other
things from wastes materials.
Life skill training There were three life skills
trainings organized during the
year. The objective of the life
skills trainings was to prepare
the children to face difficulties of
life in presents and future
situations. Through the life skill
training ISST tries to develop
good citizenship and values in
children.
Children learnt Inter-personal
relationship, value of Friendship,
Knew their Self esteem,
developed self confidence learnt
how to manage emotions,
Leadership, team spirit, to
recognize peer pressure, anger
management etc.
Health awareness fair ISST, Saathi centre organized a
health fair on 30th December-
2017 for the children of Saathi
centre and their parents. All
children who come at Saathi
Centre belong to vulnerable
communities and unprivileged
families. Most of the children
don’t have good food habits due
to busy schedule of their
parents. Apart from that children

face violence like parental
beating, abuse and negative
language used by parents at
home and teachers at schools
also, sometimes they use very
disrespectful language. Saathi
centre tried to touch above
points during the fair.
Exposure trip By exposure trips children learn
a lot about their surroundings
they get refreshed from regular
studies and learn many new
things when they go out.
ISST, Saathi centre organized a
full day exposure trip on 20th
January-2017 for the children.
Rail Museum and Lodhi garden
were selected for the trip.
Both places have their historical
values. Children enjoyed both
places.
Staff & volunteers capacity
building workshops
Two workshops had been
organized during the year. One
in the month of May-2017 and
the second was conducted in the
month of January-2018. Topics
of the workshop were:-
Effective implementation of
Bachpan program, methods of
reporting and how to
motivate CWSN children and
their parents and fearless
learning and teaching
methodology respectively.
From the both workshops staff
and volunteers became
empowered to better implement
the programme.
Thanks to our volunteers ISST, Saathi Centre has a small
staff and can’t work properly and
smoothly without the support of
volunteers. We are very thankful
Volunteers learnt many things
from Saathi Centre. The trainings
and workshops strengthen their
skill of behaving,
-
to our four volunteers. They
work selflessly without any
greed and give their invaluable
time and heart to Saathi centre
and its children. They look after
library; take classes of Bachpan,
assist to fill different forms and
do community related work. We
pay very megre to them but they
never complain and do their
work without any grudge. It
shows their passion and love for
Saathi Centre.
Overall impact in the lives of children and community
Children are wearing clean clothes.
They are keeping their class rooms clean.
They regularly wash their hands before and after eating anything.
Parents became aware about their beating habits and violence against the child after
health fair.
Volunteerism is developing in children. Senior children teach and help the
youngesters.
After participating in various activities like theatre, dance, games and discussions
children become more confident.
Reading and writing skills have drastically improved.
Through the admission of NIOS and EWS, value of education in parents and children
has developed.
What they created:-
The year saw many beautiful creations by children. They created a hand written story book
and comics (see annexure1). Through the both books children expressed their beautiful
thoughts and experiences and transformed them in stories and comics.
They also created a beautiful garden out of rubble. They did cleaning, sweeping, planting and
digging work and now taking turns to water these plants every day.
Tribulations are opportunities to know our true strengths ISST Saathi centre caught fire on Saturday, 23 September, 2017. The centre was closed due to 4th Saturday and nobody was present in office and thankfully everybody is safe. The cause of the fire was short circuit. An old wooden switch board next to the fridge caught fire first and then the fridge, water pump and two coolers caught fire
-
subsequently. The electrical wiring damaged fully. In the mean time two policemen noticed the smoke and informed the fire brigade. The fire did not spread beyond that but the room turned black due to thick black smoke. The Saathi Centre was closed for one week for the students but the young children about 50 of them regularly visited the centre to support the cleaning work. Within a week the centre was again ready to start work.
What we learnt
We can make a difference even at the time of difficulties.
Encouragement also comes from the most humble person like a child. At the time of fire
in our office, even the youngest of child encouraged us uttering “It’s ok ma’am
everything will be alright.
We learned to be patient and courageous as we experienced that, difficulties don’t stay forever and our patience and hope quickly turns the difficulties into experiences.
